There are several Israel Knapps and the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy appears to have them monumentally confused. As best I can reconstruct it, it appears that the Israel Knapp who was designated C-20 was born about 1710 in Horseneck. (Even the NKG, however, notes that this Israel may have been born in 1727, which would then make the next one a bit less confusing.) There may have been a second Israel Knapp born about 1727. And there was an Israel Knapp of unknown birthdate -- but unlikely to have been as early as 1727 -- who married Mary Hennion. The NKG combines these as one person, designated D-76. The records of the Fishkill Dutch Reformed Church shown baptisms of at least six children (with birthdates from 1770 to 1785) of Israel Knapp and Mary Hennion. It seems likely that this Israel Knapp is the one referenced in the Beekman Patent note. The NKG also shows an Israel Knapp (E-250), b. 1776, m. Temperance Tompkins, d. unk. At F-608 is another Israel Knapp, b. 1797, d. 1880. This Israel is my great-great grandfather and the NKG is again confused with respect to his children -- most dramatically with Emeline (G-1665) who is shown as born in 1847 when in fact she was married that year at age 19 at the Walden Dutch Reformed Church in Orange County. I just checked a book called Settlers of the Beekman Patent: Dutchess County, NY., by Frank J. Doherty [Pleasant Valley, NY: 1990]. There is an Israel KNAPP listed there. Here is what it says.....page 231: (The year would be 1789) "The Supervisor's meeting held the 4th Tuesday in June allowed the following: To Israel KNAPP, for transporting Eleazer Yoemans into Orange County and for procuring assistance and furnishing provisions and paying ferries. 1/16." (From the appearance in the book, I guess this to be 1 pound, 16 shillings- mp)" Was this Israel KNAPP of Greenwich? Or just a man with a similar name? ------------------------ Also, I read that there was a migration out of CT to New Jersey about 1667. Henry LYON was Newark's first *innkeeper* [The LYON Memorial, Families of CT and NJ. Detroit, MI: 1907, p. 58) , and the KNAPP family had some innkeeping experience, too. William Finch, Jr., Historian Emeritus of the Town of Greenwich-- mentioned to me while on a trip there in June of 1994, that "the Mead, Lockwood, Knapp families were in the innkeeping business". (The *Israel* KNAPP Tavern, now known as Putnam Cottage, is the headquarters of a local chapter of the DAR maintains the Inn as a museum--complete with General Putnam's tricorn hat with the bullet hole in the brim.)
