Phoebe Knapp was born March 9, 1839 in New York, N.Y. She was the daughter of Methodist evangelist Walter C. Palmer, and married Joseph Fairfield Knapp, a founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She died on July 10, 1908, in Poland Springs, Maine. She wrote more than 500 hymns, and was widely respected as a hymn composer during her lifetime. However only two of her hymns remain in common usage today, namely Blessed Assurance, and Open the Gates of the Temple, both to texts by Fanny Crosby. (Summarized from ACH1970 by Donald McKillican.)
