    2. Thomas Cornell
    3. Re: Samuel Knapp, b. 19 May 1735, son of Benjamin Knapp, Jr. and wf. Susannah Miller This guy is E-48 in the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy (NKG), and no wife or family is shown there for him. His birthdate is fairly close to the one I have calculated for my Samuel Knapp: 9 Aug. 1737 (based on date of death and age at death). Samuel Knapp, E-48, is obviously available for "adoption." However, has someone already claimed him and figured out where he belongs? It seems reasonable to ask before expending much energy on seeing if he might be mine. Three people have given me links for Samuel -- for which I thank them most kindly -- and none of them provided any clues either indicating whether Samuel, E-48, is a known or an unknown. Each came from the LDS Ancestral File to which someone appears to have contributed information directly from NKG. It is apparent Samuel was not their ancestor, and they did no research on him. The Benjamin Knapp family was in Greenwich, CT at the time son Samuel was born. That's not at all far, by today's standards, from Warwick in Orange Co., NY. It's across the Hudson River and could have been reached by ferry and several days travel by wagon around 1760-70. Interestingly, my Samuel bought land in Warwick in 1772 the very year Benjamin above died. Did Samuel decide to take his inheritance and head off for greener pastures? From his family makeup, it is apparent he was already married and had several children by 1772. His eldest had to have been born around 1760-2. The place he ended up was in western Warwick adjacent to the "Drowned Lands" on Pochuck Mountain. The Drowned Lands are known today as the "Black Dirt" area. It's prize agricultural land for growing certain crops such as onions. It was created by thousands of years of collected and rotted vegetation in swamps. Drainage of this area was very poor, and the spring rains caused variable amounts of flooding. Local residents had their areas where they cut wood and brush for fuel. They also hunted. But, the wetness was variable, and the land could not be used for crops. At some point in the 1800's, the Wallkill River's course was straightened, and the drainage was improved. Today, you find many drainage ditches which were presumably dug years ago, and those further prevented flooding. You cannot look at the land today and have much of an idea what it was like prior to 1800. So, I have no idea how good the land was that my Samuel Knapp bought. He did, however, remain there until he died in 1834 and must have been able to make a living for his family there. Bottom line: Does someone claim Samuel, E48? Also, family lore says my GGFather George Washington Knapp operated a lumber mill in Shelby County, which may tie in with your "loggers." Thanks for any information you may uncover.
