Geoffrey, My name is Ruby Ryno, not Wilbur. I use the e-mail at work as I am not on-line at home yet. I just started researching this Knapp line for my boyfriend, Ronnie McCollum, who is a direct descendant. Thank you so much for all the information. His grandmother Knapp (married name) is 93 and in a nursing home. She had a box of pictures and she has loaned them to me. There is supposedly more information on this family in a box in her house. We are going to go back and try to find it. Supposedly old letters, etc. So, I may have more to add. But the information that I have is from obituaries and tombstones and a few census records. I will bring the obituaries tomorrow and type them in. It is interesting that Nathan's mother-in-law was a Frey, because Benjamin's second wife was a Frey from Pine Township, Crawford Co., PA. If you e-mail me your snail mail address, I will be glad to send you a copy of photos, as have scanned them and have paper copies. I will also send some of tin types. Maybe you know them. I do not know where George enlisted, but I have a reference in a newspaper index I will look up soon, where Levi C. (from second marriage) went to Ohio to GAR Reunion. And, we do not live far from Chanute, as we are between Fall River and Severy, KS (Greenwood Co.). Look forward to hearing from you again and thanks again. Ruby
I believe it is in Michigan but not 100% sure as there might be more than one of them.Hope this helps. Some of the collateral lines I'm working on, associated with the Todd family are Knapp, Voorheis, Goldsmith & Allen - all mentioned in this obituary! I also have a Hazen in the family, but in a different branch of the family. That is really strange! Terri
Melody, it is definitely Michigan. Ironwood, Remus, Howard City & Reed City are all Michigan towns. I've never heard of Amble. Terri
I believe Howard City is in Michigan. All the other towns in the article are all Michigan towns as well: Ironwood, Lakeview, Reed City & Remus. I've never heard of Amble.
Wilbur, Have you looked at "Biographical History of Northeastern Ohio" P.143? It has a biography of Obed Knapp. It mentions Obed's many siblings including a Benjamin Knapp. Obed was born in Steuben Co., NY to Rufus and Anna (Burgess) Knapp October 1826. It looks like most of Obed's brothers did not stick in Ashtabula county as I could not find many Knapps in that county later on. Rufus (H-1502) is listed in the Nicholas Knapp book, a son of David (G-905) and Sophia (Knapp) Knapp. Rufus is the eldest son of this union born about 1798/1799. Benjamin (I-1503) is also listed in the Nicholas book: Benjamin (I-1503), b. about 1825. m. June 20, 1847, Sarah Place. It also lists children George E. and Laura E. However, it mentions that Sarah Place died in 1895 as a widow in Cleveland. (I don't know the source! Where did George E. enlist?) I am descended from Rufus' brother, Luman, born in 1799/1800. Luman was in Ashtabula County, OH in 1835, then Knox Co., OH in 1840, Richland Co., OH in 1850, LaPorte Co., IN in 1856. I thus wouldn't mind having a copy of the photos you have. Luman's grandson, Will Knapp, moved to Neosho Co., KS in about 1910 from LaPorte Co., IN. My father was born in Chanute, KS. Rufus' brother Nathan Knapp lived in Crawford Co., PA. And brothers Levi and John W. lived in Ashtabula Co., OH but possibly both moved to join brother in Crawford Co., PA. Nathan's mother-in-law was Barbara (Frey) Meeker. Jean Martinez who is on this list has a lot of information on Knapp's in Ashtabula Co. as she is researching another Knapp line in that county but different township. OBITUARIES SOURCE: New York Times - 17 Dec 1884 - page 2c3 "JACOB F KNAPP, of the firm of Sheppard Knapp & Co, Carpet Dealers at No 189 Sixth Avenue, died at his residence, No 218 West Fifteenth Street, on Monday, in the fiftieth year of his age. He had been suffering from Malaria for mare than a year, and two months ago was confined to his bed by a cancerous affection of the glands, which was the immediate cause of his death. He leaves a widow, and five children, four of whom are daughters. The funeral services will be held in the Scotch Presbyterian Church, in West Fourteenth Street, this morning at 11 o'clock, and the internment will be at Woodlawn. Mr Knapp was born in 1835, in Yorktown, Westchester County, where he passed the earlier years of his life. He removed to the city about 21 years ago and established himself in the Grocery business in Husdson Street, where he remained until six years ago, wehen he entered his brother's Carpet Warehouse as an assistant. Three years ago he was admitted to the form of Knapp & Co, and continued in the business until his death. He was a member and Trustee of the Scotch Presbyterian Church. Mr Knapp was a quiet, estimable citizen and leaves behind him a large number of friends and acquaintenances". -----:----- F-655 JACOB FROST KNAPP and family can be found on page 214, Nicholas Knapp Genealaogy (1953).
Dear Jean, It could very well be, since one of my Dads uncles was named Roy Alonzo Knapp. His father might have been a brother or uncle of my Darius, never know. Did you see any other names that might help? Were there any addresses? Spirit
Recently acquired a 1936 magazine entitled "Standby", which chronicles the entertainment industry, mainly radio personalities of the era. On the cover is a ROY KNAPP who was a professional musician. The article on him states that his family was from Waterloo IA where his father was a farmer as well as the owner of the first local movie theatre. Roy's birthday is October 26 but no year is given. He is said to have a daughter age 23, and a son 17, so I would just his age to be in the mid forties in 1936. If this family sounds familiar to anyone, I will gladly send along the article. The article also states that he had a brother and a sister, and that his mother died when he was only 8 yrs. old. Jean p.s. Spirit - Vinton IA is just SE of Waterloo about 50 miles. Maybe this is part of your elusive Knapp clan.
Looking for any information on: Hassidiah KNAPP born abt 1788 possibly Mass., died 2-27-1841 Montgomery Co. IN married Daniel WHITE born abt 1784 possibly MASS., died 8-7-1847 Montgomery Co. IN. Probably married somewhere in Mass. Known children: George WHITE b. 5-18-1813 Mass. married Martha UTTERBACK Lois WHITE b. 1-12-1826 Indiana married Harmon UTTERBACK Lois WHITE death certificate has fathers name as Daniel WHITE and mothers name as NAPP. There is a Daniel & Hassidiah WHITE buried in the same old cemetery along with Martha WHITE (George WHITE's wife). They are the only three WHITE's buried there. This is just a guess that NAPP is in fact KNAPP and Daniel & Hassidiah WHITE are in fact the parents of LOIS WHITE. Anybody have a Hassidiah KNAPP? Still Searching, Roger & Kim Hancock
I, too, have a NAPP who I usually assume was actually a KNAPP. I have Ann Napp, b. 1781, Greenwich, CT. Married Henry Hait of Stamford, CT. They ended up on Long Island. I can find absolutely nothing on Ann Napp - so I usually look for her as a KNAPP - with no luck there, either. So maybe the person you're researching is a NAPP? Are there any other NAPPs out there? No, no, no, Caleb only had one wife, I have their marriage cert and his will, he clearly mentions wife Betsey several times, where does this stuff come from? I have all the census records from 1810 on this line, probably one of my best researched lines b/c it was important to my mother.
