    3. The Cemetery shown in the first two pieces of info relating to Charles Junius & his father, Charles Knapp, should read "Laurel Hill Cemetery, Deposit, NY". Not "Laurel Bank Cemetery". By the way this came off a sight called The Political Graveyard A Data Base Of Historic Cemeteries. Thanks so much Fritz for spotting the error as we all hate to add data that isn't correct.Good eye. www.politicalgraveyard.com Melody Campagna http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/a/m/Melody-A-Campagna/

Phoebe Knapp was born March 9, 1839 in New York, N.Y. She was the daughter of Methodist evangelist Walter C. Palmer, and married Joseph Fairfield Knapp, a founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She died on July 10, 1908, in Poland Springs, Maine. She wrote more than 500 hymns, and was widely respected as a hymn composer during her lifetime. However only two of her hymns remain in common usage today, namely Blessed Assurance, and Open the Gates of the Temple, both to texts by Fanny Crosby. (Summarized from ACH1970 by Donald McKillican.) 1. [KNAPP] RE:Olympia Knapp
    2. Melody Campagna
    3. >From the book:Taylor, Bayard: Beauty and the Beast: and Tales of Home 1872 Now, it happened that our Congressional District was one of the closest. It happened, also, that our candidate (I am a Republican, and so is Mr. Strongitharm) was rather favorably inclined to the woman's cause. It happened, thirdly -- and this is the seemingly insignificant pivot upon which we whirled into triumph -- that he, Mr. Wrangle, and the opposing candidate, Mr. Tumbrill, had arranged to hold a joint meeting at Burroak. This meeting took place on a magnificent day, just after the oats-harvest; and everybody, for twenty miles around, was there. Mrs. Whiston, together with Sarah Pincher, Olympia Knapp, and several other prominent advocates of our cause, met at my house in the morning; and we all agreed that it was time to strike a blow. The rest of us magnanimously decided to take no part in the concerted plan, though very eager to do so. Selina Whiston declared that she must have the field to herself; and when she said that, we knew she meant it. I think I have said enough to make it clear how the State of Atlantic came to be the first to grant equal civil and political rights to women. When the Legislature of 1860-'61 met at Gaston, we estimated that we might count upon fifty-three out of the seventy-one Republican Senators and Assemblymen, and on thirty-four out of the sixty-five Democrats. This would give a majority of twenty-eight in the House, and ten in the Senate. Should the bill pass, there was still a possibility that it might be vetoed by the Governor, of whom we did not feel sure. We therefore arranged that our Annual Fair should be held a fortnight later than usual, and that the proceeds (a circumstance known only to the managers) should be devoted to a series of choice suppers, at which we entertained, not only the Governor and our friends in both Houses, but also, like true Christians, our legislatorial enemies. Olympia Knapp, who, you know, is so very beautiful, presided at these entertainments. She p! ut forth all her splendid powers, and with more effect than any of us suspected. On the day before the bill reached its third reading, the Governor made her an offer of marriage. She came to the managers in great agitation, and laid the matter before them, stating that she was overwhelmed with surprise (though Sarah Pincher always maintained that she wasn't in the least), and asking their advice. We discussed the question for four hours, and finally decided that the interests of the cause would oblige her to accept the Governor's hand. "Oh, I am so glad!" cried Olympia, "for I accepted him at once." It was a brave, a noble deedMelody Campagna http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/a/m/Melody-A-Campagna/

    3. Just a piece of history I stumbled across and thought someone might like to have. Conneautville Courier Crawford County, PA 1 Apr 1914 Frank F. Knapp has moved to the new tenant house of J. N. Corey on Center street; Charles Drummond has moved into the Faber tenant house on Water street vacated; J. G. Hadlock will move into the rooms in the Frazier building, vacated; H. E. Mathews has moved into the Bessemer Railroad tenant house near the station, and Varney Litwiler will move into the L. O. Slayton house vacated. Mert P. Wilder has moved in with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. O. H. Wilder, and Arch Farr has moved into the wilder house vacated; John Withers has moved from Meadville to the Robert Ransom house; Mrs. M. B. Millspaw has moved into the Mrs. Tew house. The Conneautville High school basket ball team were defeated by the Cambridge springs High school team, in the latter place on Friday evening, by a score of 22 to 13. The visiting team was short two of its players, Kingsley Brown and Raymond Ford, who are on the sick list, their places being filled by Elton Fish and Lee Ofensend, of the Texall High school team. The other Conneautville players were Glen Barney, Thomas Breen and Schuyler Wyatt. James Jolly accompanied the team and served as umpire and Howard Corey went as a substitute. The Conneautville team defeated the Cambridge Springs team here a few weeks ago by a score of 49 to 5, so our boys have the best of the showing. 3. Thanks again Pat as I was trying to find a connection between Samuel and John Knapp of 1784 as we have heard tell that he might have come up from the States. It is odd how they ended up in the same area. For my line I'm looking for Edward Knapp 1870 or Louisa Knapp 1869 which are Mathew James 1867 siblings.Aunt Gwen found Matthews bible and his father was Matthew Knapp born 1844 and his wife was Charlotte. All were born in England. Now my Aunt has told me that several years after Matthew James came to Canada his brother Edward came to the USA.She is in her late 80's so can not remember to where.Bob Smalley found the family in London England in the 1881 census. If these sound familiar or you have seen my Edward on your travels I would love to hear about it. Hannah Bushnell > Caleb Knapp b. 20 Jan 1637 d. 11 Dec 1674 m. Hannah Smith Hi Carmen, The line from Caleb to Samuel is the same as mine and agrees with a genealogy that Fritz Knapp sent to me, except he has "unknown" for Samuel's (1729) wife. Fritz does have a Sarah being a daughter of Samuel and "unknown" (I am descended from their son, Samuel). However, his Sarah differs a little from yours: Sarah Knapp, born 1760 in Danbury, Fairfield Co, CT. More About Sarah Knapp: RESIDED AT: Danbury, CT BAPTIZED: 1788 Could be the same person, but yours went to Indiana, so maybe there's a problem there. Fritz's source is "Nicholas Knapp Genealogy (1953), by (Dr) A.A. Knapp, :84." Humorous Danbury note: When looking into information on my Danbury Knapps I noticed that there were quite a few Barnums in that town, some marrying Knapps. After seeing the recent TV movie about P.T. Barnum, that piqued my interest, and it turns out that PT's home town, Bethel, CT, was essentially Danbury. I scanned a few biographies of Barnum at the local library, to see if there were any Knapps in the indexes. There were a couple of references. It seems that during his Bethel shopkeeper days, the young Phineas kept meticulous notes of his customers' accounts and payment history. An entry read "Squire Knapp got out of a debt for $5 by lying like hell." I'm not sure who this was, but to be called a hellacious (and successful) liar by PT Barnum is high praise indeed! Squire Knapp may have a different side of the story though. Another Danbury Knapp mentioned in the bio was a local butcher whom Barnum (a staunch Republican) accused at a party convention of being a spy for the Democrats. Knapp successfully sued Barnum for libel, although according to Barnum's autobiography, you'd think the suit failed. He left out the appeal. Joe Knapp

    3. I am a newbie to this list and I am looking for some information. I recently learned that my ggggrandfather's full name was Samuel Knapp Harrington...his parents were Isaac Harrington and Sarah Knapp. This Sarah Knapp was b. abt 1762 in Danbury, CT and was married 05 April 1785 in Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT. She died on 04 Oct 1845 in Valparaiso, Porter Co., IN. She was married to Isaac Harrington b. 10 Jun 1758 in Smithfield, Providence Co., RI and d. Jan 1847 in Valparaiso, Porter Co., IN. He was the son of William Harrington and Berthia Peters. They were the parents of the following children: Samuel Knapp Harrington b. 1796 Broome Co., NY m. Jane Hill Calvin Harrington b. 18 Mar 1798 Broome Co., NY d. 18 Apr 1888 m. Martha Winslow Hulda Harrington b. 02 Feb 1800 Broome Co., NY d. 26 Jun 1886 Thomas Harrington b. 05 Oct 1803 Broome Co., NY Isaac Harrington b. 21 Nov 1805 Broome Co., NY I beleive that they stayed in the Broome Co., NY area until after 1820 since Isaac Harrington is still in the 1820 census. Samuel, my ancestor, spent some time in OH before going to Van Buren Co., IA before 1847. I believe that he might have been in Lucas Co., IA. Through some research, I've pieced together a possibility for Sarah Knapp's ancestry and would like some opinions on the info. Sarah Knapp m. Isaac Harrington Samuel Knapp b. 1729 d. 1797 m. Hannah John Knapp b. 1700 d. 1758 m. Margaret Taylor Samuel Knapp b. 1668 d. 1739 m. Hannah Bushnell Caleb Knapp b. 20 Jan 1637 d. 11 Dec 1674 m. Hannah Smith If anyone has information or proof of any of this I would be very much appreciative and would be happy to share any info that I have.
