VA post mark.sent to Jesse Roscoe Knopp, New Brighton, Beaver Co., PA Thursday night, Oct. 6th Dear Brother and All: It has been more than a year since I've had a word from you. My last letter came back. If this one does the same I expect I'll have to give up. But I'd really like to exchange letters with you now and then. We are both well as usual. Have our fall work pretty well done. Rather bad season but we have our fruit and vegetable shelves pretty well stocked with a little of most everything from garden and orchard. We have a hog to butcher and we have two dozen nice Barrel Rock pullets besides some year old hens. The latter are laying fairly good and we get 35 cents per dozen for eggs. I am working in a stone quarry.(WPA) We are allowed to make 82 hours per month at 45 cents per hour. I got a finger mashed today that isn't feeling very good tonight. We have to wear some old dirty scratched up goggles that are worse than "blind bridles" and we sometimes can't half see what we are doing. Safety man popped up today and gave me a bawling out for having my goggles down around my neck. I'll tell him some day. I had a letter from Alma some time back. She was billed to enter the hospital first of this month for some sort of operation. Her men folks were well and working. Ben has sold his new home in Parkersburg and is moving back to Elizabeth this fall. Luther is carpentering. Been working at Dunbar below Charleston this fall. Alver still lives in Reedy. I had a letter from him just the other day, - he enclosed a card from the Jackson Co. Sheriff and I'm sending it on to you in this letter. I'm keeping the taxes paid on the oil and gas rights at Frozen Camp. Well, it is bed time and I have to roll out at 5 a.m. Drop me a line if you have not busted your pencil beyond repair. Love to All, Ira

    2. Poem written by Great Uncle Ira Knopp, father David Wilson Knopp, Mother Elizabeth Payne..... b. Aug 8, 1891, Frozen Camp, Jackson Co., WV, d. Sep. 6, 1958 , wife Emma Helen Smithson Kastle Knopp... Hope you like it... this was a while back.. BUY U.S. WAR BONDS AT LEAST 10%, EVERYBODY, EVERY PAYDAY........" ad in newspaper.... 1942, Oct. 30, Newspaper "The Jackson Herlad, Ripley, W.VA" poem by Ira Knopp THE OLD MODEL T In a weed grown corner Out back of the shed. Stood an old battered car, All rusty and red. It's tires were all flat, And the top was in strings; But around that old car, Fond memory clings. From the day that we bought it, All shiney and new; 'Til it ran its last mile, It was faithful and true. It carried us far, Upon business and pleasure, And the service it gave Was ful, Gospel Measure. But like folks, it grew old. With the passing of years; And the day that it stopped, We were all moved to tears. When it rolled from the highway To the spot by the shed, My hand held the wheel 'Til the motor was dead. I sat there and lingered---- Reluctant to leave; 'Til this thought came to me; Why should I grieve? It lived a good life-- It did its work well; It is now free from strife, Let it rest for a spell. So for two years it stands Just a ghost of a car; 'Til comes the demands Of a country at war. Forces are fighting All over the map; When a nation is scrapping That Nation needs "scrap." So the Old Model T Is off to the front; To be born anew For a different stunt. Whatever its mission, When it gets off the shelf; May it go in reverse, From its once peaceful self. If it comes out a bomb, Or a H. E. Shell; May it blow Hirohito Direct to_______(censored) Or, if part of a Tank With fierce, flamming guns, May it wade in the blood Of those Dagoes and Huns. May it deal dire destruction In enemy camps, And come out a Victor, A Champ among Champs; And when the job's finished, No more wars, never-- May it dwell with all Heroes Forever and ever. IRA J. KNOPP, Walker, W. VA.

    2. I missed something. What was the discussion about half-sisters? I have ONLY half siblings through both my mother's first marriage and my father's first marriage and I am an only child of my father and mother. I have decided NOT to contact my father's children. I am interested in what the discussion was about the half-siblings. The person who had the question, can e-mail me privately, so not to tie up the Knapp list. K

    2. In a message dated 98-05-27 18:54:04 EDT, you write: << he is long dead, b) he has a surviving widow who apparently knows nothing about his first family, and c) I have 2 half sisters who presumably are equally in the dark. >> my brother made a baby with a woman whose husband was in VietNam. The girl took in her wheelchair-bound "father". One week later, her mother told her the truth. She found us, but my brother is dead. She is my niece. I am growing to love her. She looks like my brother and my sister. I want her in my family. my brother's widow and their oldest son are cold as ice. The four younger kids have taken to her. You never know what kind of people you will find..... Why don't you contact one of the daughters and she what happens? They may not think it wise to upset the mother. Expect the worst and be thankful for what you get. :)mary, who has a beautiful niece and two bitty greats. (a boy and a girl)

    1. [KNAPP-L] Guidance
    2. "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it." This is genealogy specific, but not Knapp specific. I need some guidance: while searching for info on my father (he left when I was 2) I have discovered that a) he is long dead, b) he has a surviving widow who apparently knows nothing about his first family, and c) I have 2 half sisters who presumably are equally in the dark. This has nothing to do with inheritances or other complicated agendas. I would love to hear from anyone who might have faced this quandry or anything like it. How should I make contact? His widow would be in her 80's. He is not a Knapp (tho I'm a Knapp descendant), that's why I'm querying you folks.
