Dates in original message were incorrect. ----------------------------------------------------------- Anybody know who the parents of Hezekiah Weed and Ruth Waterbury, are? Their son, Jonas Weed, b. If anyone has a copy of "Ye Town of Greenwich" (1911), by Spencer P Mead, can you take a look in the Weed and Waterbury Sections and see if Hezekiah Weed b. 1722, and married Ruth Waterbury, is indicated. Need the parents names for both. Hezekiah and Ruth's son, Jonas, married Abigail Knapp daughter of Nathaniel and Jemima (Ward) Knapp. Need this info to complete a Family Group Record. Ruth Waterbury's parents have been indicated as being David and Mary (Sturges) Waterbury and also as Joseph and Hannah (Fountain) Waterbury. I believe her to be a daughter of David and Mary (Sturges) Waterbury, but have nothing concrete in that regard. Any and all help appreciated. Fritz

Our son's teacher in his German Kindergarten was Tante (Aunt) Knapp, prounounced Kuh-nap (with the "a" short as in ahh). Knapp is a very common name in Germany and my Knapp ancestors are all German. They immigrated to southern Ohio (mainly Scioto Co.) and their name was anglicized about the time of WWI. I was about to unscribe from this list since the only messages seem to deal with 18th century Knapps from New England. Are there any other German Knapps who arrived mid-19th century?? Ann Daniels
Are you sure that it is WEED not WOOD ? Or to be on the safe side, look at Wood as an alternate spelling. I have Woods who married Meads who also married Knapps. Sarah

When I met her I introduced myself to the Mrs. as Wyatt Knapp (I pronounced it "nap") she said, "Oh, thats my last name too...except in our family we pronounce it "Kuh-nap." I wondered about how our two families came down through the generations related somewhere back there, but the pronounciation changing somewhere along the way. Is there any evidence for how it was originally pronounced, and why some changed it. Do we know how the Nicholas Knapp/early families pronounced it. And also, there are so many stories about the derivation of the name. Did that evolve independantly in various countries? I don't think I believe the A.A. Does anyone have a clue to family of Mary A. KNAPP who married Nathan/Nathaniel West. He was born circa 1787 in KY and moved to OH., where he died circa 1855. Nathan/Nathaniel's father was John West, JR. Other siblings were born in Berkeley, VA. [email protected]

My Joseph KNAPP was born when the "Massachusetts murderer" was about 45-50 years old, and perhaps spent some time in Sing Sing, although he was later a church deacon. I know he was in Canestio, Steuben Co NY in 1860 and claimed to come from Delaware Co NY. Father and son? Looking for replies, Danny
Hi All, Through posting once and reading this board, I have found that Caleb Knapp of Greebrier County, WVA, bc1765 and married to Elizabeth Clendenin, is my ggggggrandfather. His son John is my gggggrandfather. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if and how this Caleb connects to Nicholas Knapp (#1). I just found out we will have to give up our computer in 5 days (due to job change), and it may be awhile before I can get online again. So any replys before then would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Nancy McCoy P.S. Thanks to all who share their information, I have really enjoyed being on this list..

The following passage is from "Dictionary of Culprits and Criminals" by George C. Kohn, The Scarecrow Press, Inc., Metuchen, N.J., & London, 1986. "KNAPP, Joseph (c. 1770-1830). Massachusetts murderer. On the night of April 6, 1830, Joseph, his brother John, and Richard Crowinshield clubbed and stabbed retired sea captain Joseph White to death. They had conspired to rob the captain of his hoarded money. Crowinshield, already having a bad reputation, was questioned and put in jail. A fellow prisoner, after learining of the crime from Crowinshield, wrote a letter to extort money from the Knapp brothers. The police seized the letter and arrested the Knapps. Joseph confessed and was promised immunity if he testified against the others. Crowinshield hanged himself in his cell, and John was found guilty and hanged without his brother's testimony. Daniel Webster, the prosecutor, said Joseph had consequently lost his immunity because he failed to testify against his brohter. Joseph was tried, convicted, and hanged, despite a public outcry against his conviction, termed "vindictive" by many." (See p. 203). Query: Of what line of descent are the brothers Knapp, Joseph and John? Does anyone know the names of their parents and siblings? -Stephen ***************************************************************************** Stephen Emery Researching my ancestors University of Louisville Family names: Emery, Garris, Hektor, Louis D. Anyone know which Elizabeth this is? Fritz? In Watertown, MA in the Old Burying Ground Cemetary, which I visited today..... Found one small stone "Elizabeth Knap" then at the "foot" of that stone was Elizabeth Knapp, wife of James Knapp, 1713-1716, in her 25th year. It appears that the second stone was placed at a later date because the death year was such a broad range. Her years does not fit in with my Elizabeth Warren Knapp wife of James Knapp. Anyone have an idea? Best, Karin

Dear JoeKeR63, You "obviously" have always known how to use a computer and know how to send an informative message or reply. I envy you because you never had to go through the experience of being a "newbie" like I did. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, June 13, 1998 10:10 AM Subject: Re: [KNAPP-L] Fwd: Knapp/Chase Genealogy >you obviously havent learned how to use a computer........why are we ALL >reading this stuff????????? > >
