    3. Stephen... In looking over your home page I see you do not have my ancestor as the son of Silas Knapp ( born 1770 ) wife Amelia Reed. Charles was their youngest child and is # G-1561 in the N K B on page 303. I have e-mail you a few times but do not think I followed through with my information. Let me know what you think. O.K. I loved the work you have already done with your home page. I will send you my information so you can add to your work, if you care to do it. Charles H. Knapp Born 1812 in Delhi, N.Y. He was a pioneer resident of Jerseyville, Jersey CO. ,Illinois He was an early merchant of the Jerseyville area He is listed on page 375 of the Nickolas Knapp Book His number is G - 1561 He was elected Justice of the Peace on April 23, 1842 - 1843 and 1845, in Jerseyville, Green County, IL He has his mother ( Amelia Reed Knapp ) living with him in the 1850 census and she was age 75. ( I have a copy if you would like to see ) On page 20 of a Jerseyville History Book C.H. Knapp is listed with others who were the charter members of the Jerseyville division Number 16 " Sons of Temperance" which was organized on August 4th 1847, later it is said that another 400 members were added., The division built, in 1851, a fine hall, two stories high, 22 by 50 feet, which was dedicated in Sept. of 1851. On page 110 Jerseyville History , Ill. Book say that Charles H. Knapp was the county superintendent of school , elected in the fall election in 1868 , and served for the next six years. I have a copy of a letter she ( Charlotte Knapp )wrote in 1836 , to her brother and sister in law after the death of her sister Laura, who had suffered from a long illness. Lottie and her mother ( Elizabeth Halstead Knapp ) took complete care of her at the last. I also have passed down to me through my fathers family - three silver spoons with E.H.K. inscribed on them.... I feel a real Keep sake of their past lives, for me to treasure. 1. [KNAPP-L] Knapps in Broome County -- tell me more!
    2. Daniel Byrne
    3. I just figured out that my Knapp ancestors born in Goshen, Orange county, NY, moved to Broome county, NY -- probably during the 1840s -- and then in the early 1850s moved on to Dundee and Starkey in Yates county, NY. Their names: William H. Newberry, who married Sarah Ann Knapp in Goshen in 1842. Sarah Ann is the daughter of Jesse Holly Knapp (b. Goshen) and Elizabeth R. Green (b. NJ). William H. Newberry and Sarah Ann Knapp had two children, both born in Broome county: Charles Knapp Newberry (my ggrandfather) and Josephine Newberry. By 1855 they were already in Yates county, and in 1865 Charles K. was 14 and Josephine was 20. It seems that Broome county is rich in Knapp history. There's a Knapp Hill near (I think) Chenango Point and an historical museum that was once a Knapp bank. My ancestors were only there long enough to give birth to two children and move on (albeit with several of Sarah Ann's kin) but I found it interesting that the place was a wagon-making center for folks going west, and my gggrandfather, William H. Newberry, was a wagon maker. I'd love to hear about the Knapps of Broome county. Does anyone else have Knapp ancestors who lived there? Which Knapps owned the bank? And what is Knapp Hill? Are there any books that discuss the Knapps from this region? Oh, and I'd also like to hear from anyone who has written for documents from that region. Thanks much! Candice Bradley Appleton WI

    1. [KNAPP-L] Henry Knapp, of Brunswick
    2. Stephen C. Emery
    3. Hi all, I am always fascinated with stories of notoriety. While browsing recently I saw this report from "Immigration, its evils and consequences", by Samuel C. Busey, Published by DeWitt & Davenport, NY, (1856). "U.S. Consulate, Switzerland, March 27, 1856. "Sir: . . . Four authorities and cantonial goverments have been in the habit of sending their paupers to the United States, merely securing their passage to New York." During the 2d Session of the 28th Congress, Mr. Berrien made a report in relation to the shipment of paupers and criminals to this country, accompanied with the testimony from which the following is extracted. Henry Lampaiter, jun., testified that he knew of "The instances of two persons--one named Christopher Brown, and one named HENRY KNAPP (EMPHASIS ADDED)." And that he had "learned from a woman who accompanied them, that they both had been sent to this country from a house of correction in Brunswick." (There is more testimony about Europeans being sent to America from almshouses and prisons.) Query: Does anyone claim descent from Henry Knapp, the criminal? Note: My family has tossed about a "tale" of my Emery family coming to America from England to avoid a prison term for horse thievery. I have been told that this did not occur - that the story could not be true. While I haven't uncovered any truth to the tale, I have seen the above mention practice discussed in several books. -Stephen ***************************************************************************** Stephen Emery Researching my ancestors University of Louisville Family names: Emery, Garris, Hektor, Louis D. While this site is in a "rebuilding" pattern, I now have 1279 individuals that are descendants (or spouses of descendants) of Nicholas. Please let me know if you find any errors. Whenever I load this much information, I am bound to make some typos. Thanks, Stephen Emery P.S. - again, this is a work in progress. if you don't see a line that you are researching, let me know what information you can share!

    2. Mike Secora
    3. I am researching Jeremiah Knapp b. 13 Jan 1801 Rockland county, NY...d. 28 Apr 1878 Rockland county, NY and Levi Knapp who is possibly his brother. In the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy, their father is listed a Benjamin Knapp b.c. 1857...d. 1822 NYC. According to my research and that of Fred Knapp, this is probably not true. I suspect that his father is Joseph Knapp b.c 1770...d. after 1834. He lived in Rockland County, NY at least between 1790 and 1834. Joseph's father was also Joseph b.c. 1750 d. after 1802. Does anyone have any information of any of these people.

He married Margaret "Peggy" McAllister in Randolph County, Indiana on March 31, 1831. Their children were Archabald, Henry C., Andrew, Louisa, Henderson, Solomon & William Alonzo. Andrew died about 1865, probably in Delaware County, Indiana. Is anyone else working on Ohio Knapps of the very early 1800s? I would appreciate ANY little bits of information. Andrew's parents & siblings would bring my eternal gratitude!! Linda Thorpe Auburn, WA
