Dear Fritz; You have made my day! I am so pleased to receive your email indicating Percey's linage to Nicholas. I actually cried when I when I read it. I am happy to give you any information I know. Percey Colonel Knapp was my husband's grandfather. Percey and Gladys (maiden name Shopshire and sometimes seen as Shropshire) had five children; all of which are alive except one daughter: 1- F) Lou Verne, bn:20 Sep 1913, Washtucna, WA, died: 6 May 1937, Seattle, WA (I am told by the family that she died @ the Firland Sanitarium from T.B.,but I have not confirmed this information) The family reports she was an artist by occupation. I have actually seen one piece of her work. 2- F) Verlie Louise, bn: 1 July 1915, College Place, WA, married Edward Keith Hanna on 12 Feb 1937 @ Twin Falls, ID (He died recently. I don't have his death date now, but I can get it.) 3- M) Robert Percey, bn: 15 Oct 1920, Pilot Rock, OR, married to Joanne Koenig 13 Sep 1947 @ Everett, WA 4- M) William Douglas (my husband's father), bn: 5 May 1924, College Place, WA; married to Rose Stacey Chase on 16 Jan 1944 @ San Jose, CA 5- F) Marguerite Mae (nickname 'Babe'), bn: 2 March 1926, College Place, WA; married to Andrew Kearse, 1948 (I can get this date, as we'll be attending their 50th anniv. party this Nov.) I have obtained this information verbally from the living children listed above, but primarily from Mrs. Verlie Hanna in about 1982. Aditional facts you may be interested in: Percey graduated from Oakesdale (Washington) High School, achieving many awards for track. He went to Whitman College in Walla Walla where he continued his track success. I have been given a large laminated collection of his newspaper clippings, but unfortunately they are barely readable because the lamination process made the old clippings transparent. You have to look carefully to decipher the writing, since the article from the opposite side shows through. The family gave me the clippings anyway hoping I would find use for them. I am the only person of Percey's decendents doing genealogy. Now, as for the Rich Text Formatted File, I am fairly new to computers and am not familiar with this format. I have a Macintosh PC and also a CTX IBM compatible Laptop with windows 98. I will have to check with my computer source to see about Rich Text, unless you know from what I've explained. Once again, thank you for your response. I am excited to continue correspondence and give you any additional information regarding the families listed above. Anxiously Awaiting Your Reply, Kim Knapp
Lisa, I show Hendrick (b. 1835) to be the son of Moses (b. 1803) and Lucinda Berry/Bury probably born in Stockholm or Hopkinton, NY. His grandfather was Ephraim Knap(p). I have a bit more just have to dig it out. Vince
What chit-chat? It seems to me that most chit-chat on this list is Knapp-related. Okay, so they're not all *my* Knapps. So what? I have gained from merely hanging out on the list, needless to say what I've learned when I've asked a question. And why shouldn't we chat a bit with cousins? To do otherwise would be rude, or perhaps even narcissistic. BTW, I've been baffled by a complete absence of records on my great grandfather Charles Knapp Newberry's sister, Josephine Newberry. Charles and Josephine, born in Broome County, NY in 1851 and 1845 respectively, were children of William Henry Newberry (b. 1821 Orange Cty NY) and Sarah Ann Knapp (b. 1822 Goshen, NY, a descendant of Nicholas Knapp, d. 1909 Rochester NY). I have recently acquired cemetary records from Yates County, NY. There are *numerous* Knapps in Yates County in the 19th century, and my travels around the Yates County genealogy websites have revealed the presence of many living Knapps. They are mainly from Dundee, Starkey, Penn Yan and nearby towns around the finger lakes. Many Knapps are buried in cemetaries in the above towns, particularly in Lakemont. I bought the volume covering the above towns and also the index to all the Yates county cemetaries. I would be happy to look up your Knapp relatives in the index. Yates county has wonderful information online too, including indexes to vital records, census data, probate records, tax records, and many years of obituaries in the Penn Yan Democrat. Josephine Newberry died at age 23. There is no information on the cause of death. She appears to have been childless and unmarried. This might mean that my great grandfather, Charles Knapp Newberry, was the sole progenitor of Knapps who descended from Sarah Ann Knapp. I have an obituary for Sarah Ann's brother, Charles Bingley Knapp (born 1833). He died in Yates county in 1922. Candice Bradley Appleton WI
Looking for information about Hendrick KNAPP that was married to Sara Smith. I do not know who his parents were, when he was born or died, or where he was born or died. They (Hendrick and Sara) had a son Clarence S. KNAPP that married Lillian CHAPMAN. Clarence was born in 1861 in Norwood, St. Lawrence County, NY. He married Lillian on 8 September 1886 in Norfolk, St. Lawrence County, NY. He died on 13 May 1927 in Stockholm, St. Lawrence County, NY. Clarence S. KNAPP and Lillian CHAPMAN had two children. Ruth KNAPP (I have no data about her) and her brother was Carl KNAPP. Carl was born 24 May 1889 in North Stockholm, St. Lawrence County, NY. He died 9 February 1923 in Watertown, Jefferson County, NY. However, I have no data that shows if he married or had children. Any help would be appreciated. Lisa [email protected]
I am beginning to search our family Knapps. I don't know if we tie into the Nicholas Knapp, but hope someone may be able to recognize my family. As follows: Grandpa Percey Colonel Knapp, bn-7 May 1884 @ Reedsburg, Wisc. Died 29 Apr 1962 @ Auburn, WA. Married Gladys Shopshire about 1912 in Adams County, Washington. She was born 20 Nov 1890 at Hooper (Columbia) WA and died 29 Dec 1977 at Auburn, WA. I have obtained Grandpa's birth certificate and found his parents' names listed as Merritt Adelbert Knapp (born 1848 Vermont) and Rhoda Clarissa (Douglass) born 1848 in New York. Any information will be great appreciated. -Kim Knapp
Sandra, While I don't want to be argumentative I do don't believe I agree with your approach if it means a separate list for the Nicholas Knapp line. With all the uncertainty of the early Knapps, and their close geographic proximity, I suspect it is impossible to separate the Nicholas line from the Aaron and other lines with certainty. Certainly, some of those attributed to Aaron probably are not and I suspect some of those you attribute to Nicholas also don't belong there either. I believe it is much better to maintain one web site that covers all the families so that the individual researcher can see what is being discussed and decide for him/her self his interest rather than have to monitor two or more Knapp sites. What do other think? All, I agree that this should be a mutual forum for KNAP(P)s and that the majority are of English descent. May I suggest however that input and requests for information be as specific as possible. Whenever possible Origin, Colony, State and County, Dates and any other pertinent information should be provided. I for one find it difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff when the posting is for James of New York or Mary of New England. One man's opinion. Vince Knapp
Sounds good to me Sandie -- more Knapp pages just might all blend into one and we could come up with some correct answers to our queries.... I just might even run across my: MOSES KNAPP - (Dates are supposed to be: 1764-1860 B: New york?) He married SARAH HAPTONSTAHL (2nd wife, we think). He left some children in the East, one descendent told me.. Ch: I know of 1 and that is WILLIAM KNAPP. His children: John, Joseph, Maria Lucy, Francis, Elizabeth, William W., Thomas, Margaret, Hannah Moses and SARAH KNAPP (My Great Grandmother) My "distant' cousins and I would sure like to know the Parents of this Moses. Or any other information - Any help will be appreciated. Check out my Homepage for "just a few" of my Knapps, Hills, Russells and several other Surnames. I should name it the "Lost and Found" page ---but its "My Family Tree Has Roots in WVa" Come visit anytime.. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/5112/ (be sure to use and Big "H " and a Big "R" in that address) Betty from Huntington, WVa. Dear fellow Knappers: I agree that a little chit chat doesn't hurt-even at work or at home we chit chat-helps pass the day and the workload-and remember we humans are 'social animals' - chit chat is part of life. If this site was totally fact, I would never have met some online people that I now consider friends with whom I keep in contact with and they have helped me immensely in finding my Knapp family that I knew nothing about other than a couple of names which has blossomed into something wonderful. To the list, Many thanks for all the kind words, I really appreciate it. As I was told yesterday, by some kind folks- You can please some of the people some of the time, etc. I think the point is understood. Now as for the web-site itself. Many of you have asked what you can do, this is what I have been receiving- 1. Personal family files-you link to the Knapp surname 2. Little items that you have collected about your Knapp's- I have gotten several interesting pieces of history. 3. Anything else that may be related to the Nicholas Knapp line-I have also received information on other Knapp lines as well, that I am archiving for future use. If you would like to contribute in any way, and that means: a family file, having your name and/or address posted to the e-mail list or home page list, or anything else you can think of. Please let me know. Many thanks again to all, You have been great! Sandie [email protected]

Since I have had no luck at finding a Frank L. Knapp born around 1924-25 in Texas, I have decided to see if I can find a line of Knapp's on my side of the family. Maybe I can have some luck at this one. Does anyone happen to have a Zadock Knapp that married and unknown Turner? They had a daughter named Sarah E. (Elizabeth I think but not sure yet). If anyone has these people please let me know. I have run into dead ends on all of the Knapp's I try to find. Tina Knapp

Sandi, I agree and would be glad to help you in any way I can. We all can pool our own small bits of information and maybe come out with something big. Thanks To You for even wanting to do it. Let us know how we can help. I am from the Nicholas Knapp line but only have information on my folks. They were in N.Y. and moved to Jersey CO. Illinois.
