He passed his ninetieth milestone on the 13th day of May and was hale and hearty up till the time of his last illness. Short funeral services were held at the residence on Friday afternoon and the remains taken to Rock Rapids that afternoon. The funeral services were held at the Christian church Saturday afternoon the pastor, Rev. W. H. Parsons being assisted by Rev. A. A. Burr of Spencer, SD who preached the sermon. Interment took place in the Riverview Cemetery. John Kitterman was born in Evansville, Ind. on the 13th day of May 1826, which place he made his home until he was sixteen. In March 1871 he came west settling in Lyon County, IA. He resided there until about a year ago when he moved to this city with his daughter, Mrs. Frank Worth. Mr. Kitterman was united in marriage with Survila Rhodes August 16, 1847, his wife preceding him in death by a little over four years. To this union were born eight children, four of whom are living. They are F. F. Kitterman of Port Arthur, TX; J. H. Kitterman of Steen, Minn.; Mary G. Harnett, South Sioux City, Iowa; and Mrs. Frank Worth of this city. Besides the immediate members of his family to mourn his loss there are 28 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. When Mr. Kitterman was fifteen years of age he united with the Church of Christ and has been a consistent Christian ever since, loved and respected by all who knew him. "Uncle John" Kitterman as he was known by all was respected for his justice and faithfulness to his friends. Note: John was not born in Evansville, IN nor did he live there until he was 16. Note: Survilla's name is spelled so many ways I could not determine which one was correct. Note: John went with his aunts Mary, and Anna and uncles Peter and Elias in the fall of 1842, staying at his uncle Mike Kitterman's house in Bureau Co., IL then on the IA in the spring of 1843. There father Died early in life. The Mother Remarried a MR. Schwabb and shortly after she passed. Life was strange in centuries past. Mr. Schwabb then married a step daughter. This was the way life was in those years and not a scandal. Our traditions and morales changed as well. The other's left Germany. This and obvious economic and feudal law's that existed in the Hapsburg Germany made life difficult. People left Germany in boat loads during this period of time. Some for Economic reason's some for religious reason's. Christopher Kitterman was a Lutheran--so I suppose they left for Economic Reason's more than any. Virginia Perry is our family expert. William Penn did a very good sales job in Germany. This coupled with the nearly constant wars up and down the Rhine Valley was an excellent incentive for moving to this country. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RobertHarter Surnames: Harter, Kitterman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kitterman/93/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have a handle on the Kitterman family(s) in the vicinity of Frederick, Maryland, during the last half of the 1700s? I have a mystery that has defied solution. On the obverse of the last leaf of Volume I in Pastor Krug's notation of St. Peter's Lutheran Church marriages, 1775 - 1787, is found the following entry: "1781 Frantz Herder and Susanna Kettermaemmin, proclaimed 23, 25, 26 December." Apparently these were notations of marriages that were canceled, delayed, or occurred in other congregations and not performed by Pastor Krug. There is nothing particularly notable about this entry were it not that on March 12, 1782 Susannah Kitterman married Johannes Fishburn. Upon finding the Frantz Harter entry, Byron Harter assumed that Susannah had subsequently died and that Frantz then married Catharina Kurtz. We know now, however, that Susannah was born 2 Mar 1760 and died 27 Nov 1826 in Allen Co., Kentucky. She and John Fishburn had nine children. What is the story here? Why did Susannah proclaim her intent to marry one man, then just over two months later marry another? Our imagination can come up with various scenerios, but it is unlikely that anyone will be able to definitively answer the question. It is, of course, possible that there were two Kitterman families in the area, each with a daughter named Susannah, and this has been suggested. Christopher Kitterman (Susannah's father) did have two brothers who probably lived in the area. Unfortunately, to date no evidence has been found that either had a daughter named Susannah. Can anyone shed light on this mystery? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
