If I am not mistaken I think the idea was one an ice breaker. Second the idea was that if someone was not aware of a list for an area they were researching they would now know where to find it. Most of my reserach is on ancestors that lived in Scotland, I did not know until six months into searching that their were mailing lists in the areas I was researching. Not all the postings deal with people, many deal with the area it self and the history of a certain time. As someone that has a degree in History (European, mainly German) I find it fascinating to now be able to learn about my ancestors and what was going on in their lives.
