Hi, Narcisse Joseph Reeves and his wife, Sophie Brunelle, were born in Varennes, Quebec, Canada. I have both their lines, back to France. Jerrian

HI,My Gr-gr-grandparents were cousins. James Wilkey, B: 1 Aug. 1807, in S. Belfast, Ireland;Married Isabella Wilkey, B: 10 Nov. 1810, Londonderry, Ireland. They married in Castlefinn, Donegal, where there is a Wilkey family cemetery, in May of 1835. Do not know James's parents; Isabella's were, James Wilkey and Nancy Walker. I do not know the common ancestor's name. Jerrian
Hi, Mine, I believe, was because they immigrated from Scotland (Ancestors of theirs) and they wanted to keep their heritage in tact? I know, in Donegal and Strabane, alot of them have a very scottish broaghe (sp?) Other than that, I don't know. I'm afraid I didn't word that very good. Jerrian
Well I don't know about social conditions but when my ggrandparents were married ....they were cousins....... their mothers were sisters..........they just made it......got the MC on the 25th married on the 26th and the baby came 12 days later...so it aint all geography and lack of trasportation that causes family to intermarry.....sometimes they just have to.... Hello list members, I can relate to cousins marrying cousins. My parents were EZELL cousins. My father William Jackson KNIGHT [b. 1895 Freestone County Texas] was a son of Nancy Jane EZELL [b. 1857 Freestone County Texas] daughter of Edward EZELL [b. 1830 Lauderdale County Alabama] son of David EZELL [B.1805 NC] son of Lewis EZELL, [1780 prob. NC] and Nancy ROGERS [b. 1783 prob. NC]. My mother, Ella BEASLEY[b. 1897 IT Oklahoma], daughter of John Richard BEASLEY [b. 1873 Lauderdale County Alabama], son of Susannah COTHRAN [b. 1832 Hardin County Tennessee], daughter of Martha EZELL [b.1812 NC], daughter of Lewis EZELL and Nancy ROGERS. Am looking for other descendants of Lewis EZELL and Nancy ROGERS. My deceased husband's THORNTON line is extremely intertwined. They were descended from European royalty and for many years were required to marry cousins. His grandfather was the first of his THORNTON line to marry outside the family. Two of his grandfather's sisters died as "old maids" because there were no cousins to marry. Modene Knight Thornton Freestone County Texas
With my families the Cameron, Higgins, and Gourlay's were neighbors and friends. Mary Ann Higgins married Robert Cameron and had a son William. William married Agnes Gourlay. Margaret Higgins (sister of Mary Ann) married William Gourlay (uncle of Agnes). They lived in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. It must have been a small place in the late 1880's to early 1900's. Janet Tennent Kensington, Maryland
Betsy Mostly farmers that lived away from the main populations. I guees this would be a case of "love thy neighbor". Chet
I have found in my family that the females married the neighbors, then generations later that family married back into the main family. Chet Feathers
I started this list today. I only got word that it was available to start taking messages at 4:00 this afternoon, at the moment, we've already subscribed about 30 people and I've still got invites out there, as well as leaving a message on RootsWeb-L that we were starting this list. I think that almost 30 people is a great accomplishment for only 8.5 hours. Take heart, this list is brand new, but we are finding each other really fast, and I will do everything I can to see that this list gets it's name out there where people can see it, satisfy their curiosity and tell us about their Cousin's who married. There really are alot out there, but it's the one thing that you don't hear much about. Cousin marriage has always had a stigma attached to it, and unfortunately it still does, but these people were marrying Cousins hundreds of years ago even. It's not a bad thing and I believe you will find that lots of people are in the same boat but didn't know where to talk about it. That's why I created this List. If someone knows that they've got a Cousin marriage, then I will make sure to do everything in my power to to see that they find our list and have a place to post their information. Hang in there, we are not even 1 day old yet, but already we have a base to start with. It's only going to get better. Good Night, Sleep Tight and Sleep with the Angels, Betsy Hale

HI Betsy, Don't know if you saw this gal's plea for help, but she belongs on our list. I don't know enough about computers or programs to help her, but thought I'd ask if you could. I'll forward her quiery, right behind this one. Jerrian
Chet, What were their circumstances, do you know? Where they city or rural folk? Do you know what type of occupations the breadwinners had? Betsy
Hi Jane, I also have cousins married to cousins, but I also have Reeves in my family tree. Jerrian

Wow, Modene, you just brought up a valid point for me, something I never thought of before, "old maids who were old maids because there was no one to marry?" I always thought they chose not to marry. I never thought of it that way. expanding my mind already. I have a question for the list, What are the social surroundings that caused your Cousins to marry, or do you know? My Cousins (of course I mean Ancestors but for this list, we will call them "our Cousins") were farmers in the State of Maryland near the Eastern Shore. Apparently, they weren't very close to the city, there was a small population and that didn't leave a whole lot of opportunity to socialize outside of the family atmosphere. Modene has a reason of Royalty that caused her families to intermarry, what's some of the others? Betsy Hale Proud RootsWeb Contributor
For all those that are having trouble realizing what Cousin relationship someone is to someone else, here's a chart online that you can follow and compare. See: http://www.grl.com/grl/relationship.shtml Also, this handy little thing was just passed along on another list as well (Gen-Newbie-L) Great-grandparents 1st cousins grandparents--------------grandparents 2nd cousins you---------------his father 3rd cousins your child-------------------his son You and the son are 2nd cousins once removed. I don't know if I can explain, but to get the removed, you criss cross, and the number of generations you go, is how many you are removed from that person.
Go to http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi Click the link that says Add your names to the Surname List and then go from there (You do NOT have to fill out your mailing address, some people find that helpful but it isn't mandatory) More importantly than getting your names into the list is to then search who has your same names and study what other names they are researching, or the locations, dates. This information *can* give away alot of clues as to whether they might be family or not. Good Luck and Happy Hunting, Betsy Hale
