If you know of any direct male descendants of George W. Kiser (those with the Kiser surname), you should ask them to join the Kaiser DNA Project (http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/kaiser) to see if their y-chromosome DNA matches any of the Kiser/Kaiser/Kizer, etc. families currently in the project. A number of these lived in Pennsylvania. Knowing which other families you don't match will save you a lot of research time trying to establish a connection. Finding a match to another family, of course, would be the best outcome. Be sure to look at the y-Results and Patriarchs pages. We have found a number of important "clusters" of related families. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Aubrey Cloud" <agcloud1930@everestkc.net> To: "kiser Research" <kiser@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2010 1:45 PM Subject: [KISER] Fw: George W. Ever since I posted that I would accept GEDCOMs (.GED files), I have been inundated with files, the senders asking that their family trees be added to the Germanna Families database at Rootsweb. I have a problem! It is extremely difficult to add other researchers' databases to our main Germanna database if those who send such .GED files haven't made sure that their databases adhere to normal standards for database construction. What I mean is, if you send me a GEDCOM and it is full of errors as far as construction is concerned, it takes me hours, even days, to correct it so that I can add it to the main database. Examples: 1) You enter "places" as: Podunk, VA Podunk, Virginia Podunk, Whatever County, VA Podunk, Whatever County, Virginia Podunk, Whatever Co., VA Podunk, Whatever Co., Virginia 2) You don't enter surnames in your databases in capital letters. It makes it a lot easier to concentrate on surnames if you put them in your database in ALL CAPS. 3) You enter dates such as 3/4/1890. How in the #*^*(* are we to know if that means 03 Apr 1890, or 04 Mar 1890? You are free to use whatever date convention you wish, whether its Day/Month/Year, or Month/Day/Year, just don't use NUMBERS!!!!! The American standard has been to use Month/ Day/Year, while, at the same time, most genealogy researchers (and everyone else in the world) use the Day/Month/Year. Whatever convention you use, don't use a number for the Month!!!!! Dang it, how hard is it to type in 11 Dec 1876, or Dec 11 1876, instead of 11-12-1876, or 12-11-1876? Give us a break! Etc., etc., ad infinitum. Can you see that you must adopt a standard format for entering places and dates in you databases? I really don't care what format you use, but you must use the same format throughout your database!!!!! Let's get it together and use a standardized format for place names! Look at your database. How many different forms of the same place name do you have there? Is there any reason that you can't use ONE standard format for place names? I don't care if you have "just" copied place names from other databases on Ancestry/Rootsweb, when you incorporate them into your database, make adjustments, make corrections, put them right! If you want to enter a person's birth, marriage, or death place as a certain town, look up the county where that town is located and include the COUNTY in the "place", (If you were using a "good" genealogy database program, you would have access to a "Place Finder", which would tell you where any town/city was located. I'm just tired of having to correct place names, where the originators of the databases have used multiple place names, all different (but the same place), and can't seem to use ONE common place name. For Heaven's Sake, why can't you decide one on ONE common place name? Yes, attention to detail is very desirable when entering data into your computer database program. If you're serious in this genealogical study, why can't you be serious in how you enter data into the database? Continuing to be an "Arschloch", I challenge you to "get it right"! Sarge

Hello LIsters, This list has limited activity so I thought I'd post some of my linage in hopes of stimulating some interest. Jacob Keyser/Kiser b 1753 Gemantown Pa m Catherine Stambaugh (1775) Jacob Keyser II b1789 ( I died young), married Mary Campbell (1811) William, John,Catherine James Mary and Margaret William Kiser (b 1812) married Anna Eliza Wagnor Shippensburg Pa daughers Mary , Anna, Elizabeth and Florence: sons, David Oliver , Josiah Campbell and William H immigrated to Pittsburgh after the civil war Josiah (b 1843) married Nanny Benney Littell; sons James Russell . Dale Thompson Kiser b 1882(my grandfather) married Helen Catherine Fyfe then Marie (Mary Kelly) Death date and place unknown. My father was Joseph Campbell Kiser b 1913 d 1984 I cannot locate the date or the place of death of Dale Thompson Kiser. I located him in the census's in 1900, 1910, 1920 (under Kaiser) with his wife Helen Kate and 4 of 5 children. 3 kids died in 1923 one in 1918 and later that year I located a marrige certificateof him to a Marie Kelly. He lists his mother and father and his sisters address as his own. He is in the local directory until 1927. He is in his fathers (Josiah) obiturary (1925) but no mention of him in any of his siblings obits. Siblings all died after 1937 and are included in the probated estate of their gfather William. I chased all siblings and their children. {{He was obviously kidnapped by aliens in a spaceship.}} I've search obits in the Pittsburgh Press and the locale cemeteries,in person, to no avail. Any help in this regard would be appreciated. I plan on going to the Burgh in 3 wks to try New Castle for another search. I'm focused on 1927 forward because he was omitted from the probated estate of his grandfather William who died in 1900 but estate was not setteled until 1937 when Williams unmarried daughter Florence died and the house had to be liquidated. I've done several New Castle searches with no result. No SSI either. HELP Anyone, Jim Kiser in South Louisiana. From time to time, we List Administrators have problems with subscribers to our Lists whose email server is AOL. This note is sent to explain the problem and to attempt to help AOL users correctly configure their email settings. The AOL mail system uses both a "Black List" and a "White List". The Black List contains those email addresses that the user does NOT want to receive email from; the White List contains those email addresses that the user DOES want to receive email from. The problem with AOL's system is that if a user puts, for example, the address johnqpublic@whatever.com in his/her Black List, and JohnQPublic is a subscriber to a Mailing List at Rootsweb, then AOL, for some reason, rejects all email from the List. If you're an AOL user, PLEASE make sure you don't "Blacklist" any List subscribers, AND make sure you have put the email address of the Mailing List(s) in your "White List". Thanks, Sarge
Just for information for those of you who use BellSouth as your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Since the "merger" of BellSouth and AT&T, there have been problems for a lot of users getting their emails from Rootsweb. The folks at Rootsweb haven't yet figured out what is wrong that is causing BellSouth to not accept emails from Rootsweb. Users have been "bounced" for about a week and a half now; some have re-subscribed, only to be "bounced" once again. So, if you're a BellSouth user, be advised that if you stop receiving posts to any Rootsweb Lists, you may have been bounced. The best thing to do is to contact the various List Administrators and have them check to see if you're still subscribed. I know it is kind of silly for me to speak to you about this problem, since if you have been un-subscribed, you won't see this; but... some are still subscribed and this is for them in case they, too, get "bounced". You can always reach the Admin of a List by sending an email to: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com. In case you do send email to Admins and you don't get a reply, try sending to the personal address of the Admin. My address can be found in the From: header of these emails, and below. Regards, Sarge GermannaResearch@rootsweb.com
Just a note to inform everyone that the Anti-SPAM filters at Rootsweb have really been tightened up. There was just too much SPAM being posted and it was working List administrators to death trying to keep up with it. Some users have observed that their posts never showed up in Lists, and I, as administrator, never saw them either. The reason for that is that with the tightening of the rules, NO posts containing HTML (Styled Text, Fancy Text, Colors, Bolding, Underlining, Sizes, Tabs, Bullets, Forms, Tables, etc., etc.) will be posted (as usual). The posters won't receive any notification, and neither will the List Administrator. The posts containing HTML will just disappear into the ether. Only "PLAIN TEXT" emails will be posted, so make sure that you have your email program set to that setting. To be on the safe side, do not include ANY kind of tags at the end of your posts, no "Signatures", no long lists of surnames being researched, etc. If you feel you MUST have some sort of tagline, Rootsweb requires you have no more than 3 lines. IMHO, those long, long lists of surnames are a waste of time, usually. And, including your place of employment, duty title, address, phone number, etc., is absolutely unnecessary. Let's try to keep the Lists "lean and mean", and this means "snipping" out all unnecessary text from the body of an email when you are replying. Quote back just enough of the original message to make it clear to what you are replying. Thanks, Sarge List Administrator
Followup to my previous message: I tried to email jobaby94@aol.com and the message bounced, saying jobaby94 is not accepting mail from my address!!!!! This has become a real problem with AOL users. AOL has such a complicated setup for email that many users can't set it up correctly, or don't even know it should be configured. I guess these are users that have their program to accept email "only" from addresses in their "white" list. In any case, from now on when I get a bounce like that I'm going to just auto- matically manually unsubscribe the user. Fair warning. Regards, George W.
