All, I just thought I would give you all a tid-bit of information which might spur you to trace harder. When I was a student in Ireland I spent time in the National Library looking up the family. I didn't get very far, but I did note there was a family history of the Kirwans of Cregg castle ( and of two other main branches in galway - which was prepared by a Captain Walter Kirwan of Cregg in the 1930's and which traced his family back 2000 years or more (I believe to the legendary Milesius , King of Spain). Clearly the first 1000 years is a bit iffy and mainly consists of oral (and unreliable) tradition that almost anyone in Ireland could get into, but back to 1484 is fairly reliable and from 1484 back to perhaps 900 a.d. is at least plausible. All this is a 20 year memory for me now, but the message is that if any of you can establish a link from your own families to the kirwans of galway you may then be able to punch back sooooo far it will be incredible. Incidentally, the Galway Kirwans fell on hard times following the Cromwellian invasion (1649)and were only restored to their lands after the restoration of Charles II in 1665?. I always believed that maybe that was when the poorer Kirwans took off for parts foreign from Galway and that maybe one day I could trace a link from Wexford to Galway. Alas, I married, had children etc..... But ONE DAY!!!.
