This was a separate entity from the RIC. While the RIC was almost a military unit the DMP was only a police force. The difference in the force was pronounced enough so that when Ireland wins independence the RIC is disbanded while the DMP is incorporated into the Garda (Irelands current national police force). I have a very good book on the history of the RIC written by Jim Herilhy, who is currently writing a book on the DMP.
