    3. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Antigonish, Nova Scotia there is a place called "Ireland". It is near the Ohio river. It is not too far from "Cross Roads", (another town). This is were in the late 1800's there is a Mrs. Kerwin listed on a handwritten map that I have of the area and all the residents. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of the advantages of working in a FHC (or going once a week), is that I can keep up with all the films that come in each week and if any come in that are of use to my research, I utilize them. Once came in one time, Film # 919007 Tithe Books/Griffith's Primary valuation that I looked up the Kerwins. In Wexford, Ireland there were too many to hand write (as I wrote in my notes). Like the Darcys adn unlike the other twelve "tribes" they are of Gaelic origin. They are first recorded in history as erenaghs in Co. Louth, and were not connected with Galway until the fifteenth century. In Irish the name is O Ciardubhain, the sept being of the race of Heremon. Early forms in English are Kerovan, Kyrvan and O'Quirivan, whence the Co., Clare placename Craggykerrivane. It was not until they went to Galway that they made their mark in Irish history. Since then there have been many Kirwans of note. Most Rev. Francis Kirwan (1589-1661), Bishopo of Killala, was a prominent supporter of Rinuccini-he was ddriven into exile and ended his days in France. A generation later, John Kirwan is noteworthy as the only Catholic Mayor of Galway (1686) between 1654 and the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829. Richard Kirwan (1708-1779), of Cregg, Co., Galway, was especially remarkable in an age of fine soldiers for his valour in the service of France and Austria and as a successful duellist. An Irish family of Kirwan established in Dauphiny was ranked among the nobility in France. Two men who began their careers as Jesuits and became Protestants, were Walter Blake Kirwan (1754-1805), Dean of Killala and famous preacher, and Richard Kirwan (1734-1812), chemist, linguist, philosopher, patron of Bunting and President of the Royal Irish academy. Of the former, his uncle, the Catholic parish priest, bewail his apostate brother's change of religion, is said to have remarked, "Tut, man, he had no religion to change"! Another Kirwan should also be mentioned, for Owen Kirwan was hanged with Robert Emmet in 1803. (The name O Ciardubhain has "s above the O and the second a.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1891 Nova Scotia Census - Antigonish County Antigonish Harbour - West End Mary A.
