    1. [KIRWIN-L] Kirwans Lane
    2. Tom Fitzsimmons
    3. This is the start of the article, " 'To be or not to be...' The Question of Kirwans Lane" in "Archaeology Ireland" for Autumn, 1997 pages 18 and 19. "Kirwans Lane lies in the western quarter of the city of Galway, inconspicuously linking Cross St and Quay St. For many years its derelict buildings testified to the centuries of gradual impoverishment of Galway from the moment the Cromwellian forces entered the city in 1652. The lane is one of its oldest streets and in the years leading up to the city's capitulation to the forces let by Sir Charles Coote, it was the home of the Kirwans, perhaps the wealthiest of all the families in Galway."

    3. Hi all, I am always intrigued to learn of the ways the Irish mind works - I do believe there is something quite unique... Along those lines (and for a bit of weekend fun) here is a copy of a post from Nancy Monaghan, Listowner of the Irish-American list: Here are some additional proverbs to ponder: Is minic cuma aingeal ar an Diabhal féin. There is often the look of an angel on the Devil himself. Bíonn gach tosach lag. Every beginning is weak. Is fearr obair ná caint. Work is better than talk. Ní fearr bia ná ciall. Food is not better than sense. Is é do mhac do mhac inniú, ach is í d'iníon d'iníon go deo. Your son is your son today, but your daughter is your daughter forever. Is é an duine an t-éadach. The man (person) is the clothes. Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste, ná Béarla cliste. Broken Irish is better than clever English. Ní bhíonn tréan buan. Strength is not enduring. Ní bhíonn beag bog. Little (things) tend not to be soft. Bíonn an fhírinne searbh. The truth is bitter. Buail an iarann te. Strike the hot iron. Is fearr an tsláinte ná na táinte. Health is better than wealth. Is minic a bhris beál duine a shrón. It is often that a person's mouth broke his nose. Is minic a ghearr teanga duine a scornach. It is often that a person's tongue cut his throat. Is minic cuma aingeal ar an Diabhal féin. There is often the look of an angel on the Devil himself. Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin. There's no hearth like your own hearth. Níl aon tóin tinn mar do thóin tinn féin. There's no sore ass like your own sore ass. Bíonn caora dhubh ar an tréad is gile. There tends to be a black sheep (even) in the whitest flock. Ní fiú scéal gan údar. There's no worth to a story without an author. Ní tír gan teanga. There is no nation without a language. Ní bhíonn an rath, ach mara mbíonn an smacht. There is no prosperity unless there is discipline. Luigh leis an uan, agus éirigh leis an éan. Lie with the lamb, and rise with the bird. Nuair a bhíonn an fíon istigh, bíonn an ciall amuigh. When the wine is in(side), the sense is out(side). An mháthair leis an mac agus an iníon leis an athair. The mother (sides) with the son, and the daughter with the father. Nuair a bhíonn an cat amuigh, bíonn an luch ag rince. When the cat is outside, the mouse does be dancing. Bíonn blás ar an mbeagán. Little things tend to be tasty. An té a bhíonn breoite, ní bhíonn feoil air. The person who is ailing, there does not tend to be meat on him. Is fearr rith maith ná droch-sheasamh. A good run(ning) is better than a bad stand(ing). 3. I don't have any info on Patrick and Thomas Kirwan, and didn't know about them until I got a letter from Mrs. Moloughney last week. I should dig out the notes I took from Slater's Directory for (I think) 1880. It has some names in Roscrea. Martin Kirwan was a prominent name in Roscrea, I know. Glad to finally know that someone else has heard of Chateau Kirwan. A cousin from Leadville, Colorado went down to the Denver Library two years ago and copied some info about the wine and sent it to me, but I don't have it here with me. Tom Fitzsimmons.

    3. Sorry, in trying to give you "one stop shopping" to the links, apparently I short cut too much...for the first link, try http://www.webring.com/indx.html#ringworld then type in ireland and choose the Emerald Ring or whatever suits your fancy (#29, Irish Genealogy Sites on page two of the index looks interesting)... for those of you who may be new to it, webrings are link circles to pages addressing common themes. For the article on the Famine, try http://vassun.vassar.edu/~sttaylor/FAMINE/ that one was my typo! 3. Oh, I cannot resist! YES, I can speak honestly and say that when our branch or Kirwin women get together, several things are true (and I have cousins on this list who will tell you if I lie...) it is hard to shut us up, we laugh LOTS, we are very strong, some folks do think we are a bit peculiar, but don't care, we know we just have great genes! Anyone else out there willing to "confess"..... I agree, it is quite sad to look at the statistics of those who were arrested and what the charges were - as you say often charges resulting from poverty or hunger. The info is important as it lets us know how they got here (or to Australia), many times the sentences were commuted by ship captains who let them off the boat before they ever reached a prison and, as you say, once here their lives improved and we are all the result of it all! Here is the link to the Kirwin, Kansas homepage http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas/towns/Kirwin/ and another link to info on Kirwin, unfortunately, not alot on its founder http://raven.cc.ukans.edu/~hisite/kancoll/books/cutler/phillips/phillips-co-p3.html#KIRWIN. 1. Tipperary KIRWAN
    2. Tom Fitzsimmons
    3. My mother was Berniece Kirwan, born 1913 in Fort Randall, South Dakota, her father was Edward Bernard Kirwan, born 1877 near Ceresco, Nebraska, his father was John C. Kirwan, born about 1829 in Bournea Parish (pronounced BOORN-yuh) (spelled Bourney in Griffith's Valuation, also spelled Burrine in an English document from 1640) County Tipperary, about 4-1/2 miles south of Roscrea, which is in the far northern tip of the county, between Laois and Offaly Counties. John's mother was Mary, and his father may have been Daniel. Mary lived in the townland that is now spelled Ballyknock, but is also spelled Ballinough, Ballynaugh, and Ballieneagh in old records. The name, Kirwan, is pronounced different ways around there: one is "KEER-wan" and the other is "KEER-van". Maybe the latter is closer to the Irish language pronunciation of the name. Most of the Kirwans from the parish seem to have been buried in an ancient graveyard called Boggaun, but there are very few inscribed stones there. Mrs. Kathleen Moloughney, of Rosemary Street, Roscrea, has written a little book, "Roscrea, My Heart's Home," and from the book, freely rendered is this information: Tom Parr had a bit of land at Charlie's Cross and Kirwans had a couple of fields and a forge. This was the Kirwan's original home place. William Delaney married Sally Kirwan (Mrs. Moloughney great grandmother) The family was involved in land troubles and were evicted. Thomas and Patrick Kirwan were brothers. Their father was in the Fenians. Their Uncle was an attorney in Thurles in 1846. They were in the drapery, grocery and drinks business. Charlie's Cross is on the Templemore Road south of Roscrea. John Kirwan came to America in early 1861, and lived in Ohio, Missouri and Nebraska. He died in 1882 and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in O'Neill, Nebraska. He had at least one brother, Jeremiah, and at least two sisters, Margaret and Anne.

    3. Haven't tasted it but have a letter from a Michael Kirwin in London who says he has not only tasted it but visited the Chateau in France and truly enjoyed the whole experience! You translate! Also, FYI, I have a note from McLysaught's book on Irish Family names that phonetically pronounces the old Irish spelling of what came to be Kirwin/Kirwan/ Kerwin, etc. as Curr-doo-wahn... Do you have any more info on those two brothers you mentioned PATRICK and Thomas, i.e., how old were they in 1846....? Could this be a link to my Patrick? How do you link these folks to your John? It is not too far from "Cross Roads", (another town). This is were in the late 1800's there is a Mrs. Kerwin listed on a handwritten map that I have of the area and all the residents. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of the advantages of working in a FHC (or going once a week), is that I can keep up with all the films that come in each week and if any come in that are of use to my research, I utilize them. Like the Darcys adn unlike the other twelve "tribes" they are of Gaelic origin. They are first recorded in history as erenaghs in Co. Louth, and were not connected with Galway until the fifteenth century. In Irish the name is O Ciardubhain, the sept being of the race of Heremon. Early forms in English are Kerovan, Kyrvan and O'Quirivan, whence the Co., Clare placename Craggykerrivane. It was not until they went to Galway that they made their mark in Irish history. Since then there have been many Kirwans of note. Most Rev. Francis Kirwan (1589-1661), Bishopo of Killala, was a prominent supporter of Rinuccini-he was ddriven into exile and ended his days in France. A generation later, John Kirwan is noteworthy as the only Catholic Mayor of Galway (1686) between 1654 and the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829. Richard Kirwan (1708-1779), of Cregg, Co., Galway, was especially remarkable in an age of fine soldiers for his valour in the service of France and Austria and as a successful duellist. An Irish family of Kirwan established in Dauphiny was ranked among the nobility in France. Two men who began their careers as Jesuits and became Protestants, were Walter Blake Kirwan (1754-1805), Dean of Killala and famous preacher, and Richard Kirwan (1734-1812), chemist, linguist, philosopher, patron of Bunting and President of the Royal Irish academy. Of the former, his uncle, the Catholic parish priest, bewail his apostate brother's change of religion, is said to have remarked, "Tut, man, he had no religion to change"! Another Kirwan should also be mentioned, for Owen Kirwan was hanged with Robert Emmet in 1803. 3. repost of info from Chris Bodor, reply to him @<poetnoise@flotsam.com> or check out his page at http://members.tripod.com/~Chris_Bodor/index.html Hello Kirwans - A fellow named Bob Gregory is looking for information on Michael Frances M. F. Kirwan Manufacturing of O'Neill, Nebraska. Bob is an antique fishing lure collector and according to his reference books, M. F. Kirwan Manufacturing produced a fishing lure in 1923. It was made of wood in the shape of an egg and it was called Kirwan's Bad Egg. Bob belongs to the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club and he is thinking about writing an article on the Bad Egg for the club magazine. There were very few fishing lures manufactured in Nebraska and he thinks a story on Kirwan's Bad Egg would be of interest to the club membership. Many of the Kirwans in Boyd County have already been contacted. It is known that he was born in Cameron, Nebraska on April 22 nd, 1870. Also, he boxed in the Golden Gloves in the 1890's and that later he was a barber in O'Neill. Bob Gregory would like to know about M. F. Kirwan Manufacturing and the story behind Kirwan's Bad Egg. Development, testing, manufacturing, painting, advertising, distribution, pricing, etc. Anything you can do to help will be appreciated.
