    1. [KIRWIN-L] Wake up! Time to listen for voices from our ancestors!
    2. Jana Black
    3. The list has been pretty quiet lately - maybe this'll wake you all up! Anyone got some good Irish Kirwin All Souls, All Hallows or All Saints tales or traditions to share??? This came from the Irish American Club.... "A group of Americans was touring Ireland. One of the women in the group was a real curmudgeon, constantly complaining. The bus seats are uncomfortable. The food is terrible. It's too hot. It's too cold. The accommodations are awful. The group arrived at the site of the famous Blarney Stone. "Good luck will be followin' ya all your days if you kiss the Blarney Stone,"the guide said. "Unfortunately, it's being cleaned today and so no one will be able to kiss it. Perhaps we can come back tomorrow." "We can't be here tomorrow," the nasty woman shouted. "We have some other boring tour to go on. So I guess we can't kiss the stupid stone." "Well now," the guide said, "it is said that if you kiss someone who has kissed the stone, you'll have the same good fortune." "And I suppose you've kissed the stone," the woman scoffed. "No, ma'am," the frustrated guide said, "but I've sat on it." heh heh! Jana

    1. [KIRWIN-L] Laurence Joseph Kirwan
    2. Chris and Kathy Kirwan
    3. In searching for my cousin Laurence Kirwan, who was born in Dublin in 1903 and died (we think) in Philadelphia in about 1986, I wrote off to the Social Security Administration and obtained a copy of the 11/20/1936 Application for Social Security Number of Laurence Joseph Kirwan. He turns out to be the "wrong" Larry, but perhaps he "belongs" to someone else. Laurence Joseph Kirwan said that he was born 8/24/1909 at Worcester, MA, the son of John Kirwan and Catherine Coffey. In 1936, he worked at the Kennedy Co. in Worcester, and resided at 56 Uxbridge St., also in Worcester. I checked the Social Security Death Index, and found that this Laurence Kirwan died in 6/1967 in MA. By the way, my local PBS channel broadcasts an Irish show called Ballykissangel, which I find to be enjoyable (it's filmed in Wicklow). The female lead is an actress named Dervla Kirwan. 2. Marianne: I am wondering if you are not related to me and Beverly in Wichita. My mother's cousin lived in Las Vegas. Her mother was Rose Ellen Kerwin, her grandparents were John W. and Catherine Kerwin (from Joliet, to Hodgeman County, Kansas, to Wichita). My mother's cousin would have been born in late 1800's or early 1900's. Carole Shanahan

    1. [KIRWIN-L] Liverpool info
    2. Jana Black
    3. this was posted on the SHAMROCK list and I thought it might intrigue some of you... or even be relevant! Jana IRISH TO LIVERPOOL I have found that after 1840's that the Irish went into this one city. The Population was doubled and they were housed in the Scotland Road area. The housing was just awful, but it was housing. The Irish could find work on the docks, doing manual labor and were treated as uneducated and unskilled labor. But it was work. It cost less to go into Canada than it did to go into the US, and once in either place, the Irish would work and send for their relatives. Not all made it out of the country. Mine had children born in Liverpool. These children were needed to help out. Mine got a job as a fitter, which had a five year training period. This was a highly skilled machinist and he was able to work on ships or in factories. During the German war, they were again unemployed, and many of the Irish could work on the boats to pay for their passage. Now I did meet someone thru a list who has promised to send me a map of the streets(area) where the Irish lived in Liverpool and a drawing of the tenaments of Victoria Square where 157 flats were built for the Irish workers. If and when I receive this information, I shall gladly copy for anyone interested. I am Marianne Kendelhardt of 1166 East LuLu Avenue#3 in Las Vegas, Nevada 89119, and if you give it a month and then send me your address I shall send you what I receive. This person also went to the Liverpool records office for me and could not find Victoria Square listed or any of my relatives. So clever man went into the electoral records. It listed the name of the householder, his wife and anyone else of voting age. Of course women did not vote. I hope this will help someone and should I receive any more information, I shall let you know. Scotland Road and area is quite near Liverpool docks, where so many people including our Irish had found casual work. Much the same as they did in New York City. This was per half day and the labourers had to queque in the hope of getting work, but it was not guaranteed. Hence lots of poverty if there were no ships to work or your face didn't fit. Today, this area has been totally redeveloped. The closest Cemetery to this area may be the Kirkdale Cemetery. The Roman Catholic only cemetery at nearby Ford in the Borough of Bootie. It has been indexed by the very active Anglo-Catholic group in Liverpool Family History Society. 3. In the Sunday newspaper this week and last week, a store called Superquinn "The Specialists in fine wines and spirits" have an ad for a French Wine Sale. One of the wines, priced at 15.99 Irish pounds per bottle (about $25, which I think includes 21 percent value added tax) is "Les Charmes de Kirwan" a 1995 Margaux vintage.

    1. [KIRWIN-L] Family Heritage Centers
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, Yesterday I posted info regarding the addresses of Family Heritage Centers in Ireland. Later in the day I rec'd an inquiry as to just what the "Irish Family History Foundation" was.... and I realized I really didn't know, I had assumed they were an offshoot of our FHC's.... In today's SHAMROCK list, discussion has continued regarding the use of various search resources and whether you get your money's worth by doing so. FYI, here is a post that seems to sum up the discussion: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In response to the high cost of researching in Ireland using the Heritage Centres - See the message that I sent regarding contacting the Parish for Records: Tim Maher asked about writing to a parish for records. I returned from Ireland after a two week visit in May. I went to the parish of my grandmother in Lismore, Co. Waterford, that parish like many others are now sending their records to the County Heritage Centers. Therefore, I suggest that you contact a Center and have them provide you with the research. Coincidentally, I have used the Offaly Center, and just received a reply from them yesterday!! It takes 6 weeks for the assessment report ($40US). But, they found my gr-grandfather's siblings and parents' marriage certificates in two locations (so a single parish would not be able to do this) and will provide the information in a report for an additional $50US. So, a total of $90US for a report on my gr-grandfather's ancestry. Incidentally, I have paid $150US for a private researcher to try to find information on my gr-grandfather before my May trip to Ireland - but they were unable based on the facts that I had supplied to them. So, the $90 vs $150 seems like a true bargain. I will see what the Offaly Ctr report looks like and compare it to the $200 report that I received from the private researcher on my gr-grandmother from Co. Leitrim. I will advise you and the list on the thoroughness and presentation of the Co. Offaly vs Private Research reports. Jack Lamb

    1. [KIRWIN-L] Grandparent Interview ???S
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, I belong to several other lists and on one the idea of interview questions came up. I had developed this set for a classroom unit a few years ago and shared it and got lots of positive feedback.... soooo, thought you allmight enjoy having them as well. Remember to answer the questions for yourself and write it down for future generations as well! I originally prepared these for use by fourth graders in interviewing their grandparents, but at this point, enough adults have used them that I know they cross age barriers quite nicely; feel free to add to them amend them, make them your own. All the questions are designed to bring out information rather than "yes" or "no" answers - enjoy! Actually some folks had better success having their kids ask the questions - the elders somehow were less likely to call those sweet young faces "nosey!" It might be wise NOT to ask them all in one sitting! One more caution - I was so worried about interviewing my grandmother who was 89 and healthy that I forgot to interview my mother who was 65 with bone cancer. That was 11 years ago. Today the only record of my mother's voice that I have is on the interview of HER mother. My mother died two months after the interview. My grandmother died May 2, 1998, this year, 6 weeks short of her 99th birthday. Guess whose interview I do not have????? sigh...... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A GRANDPARENT INTERVIEW ABOUT YOUR OWN FAMILY ? 3. I'm fwd'ing on this request from Emily Drummond, aka chief.uvcc@cmdgrp.hqusareur.army.mil. .Am searching for John William (or William John) Kirwan, born in Ireland in March 1856 and immigrated to the US in approx 1862 (according to 1900 census). His mother and father were John William (or William John) Kirwan and Ellen Clarey (Cleary). The son turned up in Bloomington, Illinois, in the 1880 census, but haven't been able to locate the mother or father or from where in Ireland the family immigrated (Counties Clare and Cork were a bust). Are you, by chance, related to this branch?? Charles F. Kirwan, Son of John William (1856) was my maternal grandfather. Emily Drummond
