Hi, folks! Both my husband and I are sick this week. I was supposed to start a new job yesterday...I suppose a shot of Irish whiskey would cure anything. In any case, I transcribed my gggrandfather's store journal. His name is James Kerwin and he owned a store in Java, New York in the 1870's. I will be typing it up and submitting to the NY Wyoming County Gen Web project. I don't have a personal or family web page yet. Just too time consuming at the moment to start and maintain. It's a very small journal, not very comprehensive nor complete. But interesting all the same. It will be posted with all the spelling variations intact. I'll let you know when I am ready to submit it...probably by the end of the month. There are very few names, but all five of James' children and two of his grandchildren (my grandmother and her sister) have their birthdates listed in this little gem of a book. Just thought I'd share with everyone. THanks! P.S. How are plans for the Kerwin reunion coming? Cheers! Jennifer L. Williams This program is close captioned for the thinking impaired.
Hi Jennifer (and all you other loveable Kirwans...) Just a note on the reunion - haven't had the time to work on the mailing list this last week, but the bosses will be out of town for the next three days, so I hope to make headway. Send me those addresses! P.S. I will also send out an e-mail version of the Reunion info to this list. Hope all is well with everyone out there -- Denver had a lovely 73 degrees this Sunday last! I still can't believe it.... >Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 12:42:36 -0500 >From: Jennifer Williams <mzngrace@boone.net> >Subject: [KIRWIN-L] Kewin journal >To: KIRWIN-L@rootsweb.com > >Hi, folks! Hello Kirwan cousins (note the spelling, since that's how MY Kirwans spelled it <g>) I recently purchased the British Isles VItal Records Index from LDS, which contains birth and marriages from 1538 - 1888. If any of you would like a Kirwan (or other family line) lookup, please e-mail me directly. If it is okay with Jana, maybe I will post the Kirwan responses to the list (if there are not too many). The CD only contains LDS index info, but will list parents names and places. It will also list any other children by that set of parents. I found several unknown siblings this way. The CD is by no means complete, contains about 5 million names, and most data is from civil registration. I was told the info on this CD is not duplicated in the IGI, and that has been my experience with my lines. Please provide as much info as you have, but the search features are pretty neat! Hmmmm, I assumed this got posted since it was cc-ed by Gerald to the list, but a note from Mingzmom suggests not! Here is what he sent me... didn't mean to keep you all in suspense! Hey Gerald, Just supply your address and we'll all be there for Turkey Day ala Chateau Kirwan! We'll be the turkeys, you can supply the Kirwan AND the translation for that lovely French webpage (my 2 years of high school French applied 30 years later somehow didn't quite cut it!). Hi list, As of this morning, there are now 40 of us sharing information! Welcome to all our new subscribers - PLEASE POST whatever you know, wherever you are stuck and let us get to know you! We have already had plenty of evidence that WIT is a Kirwin/an trait, and the more we all let each other know each of us, the better we can understand ourselves. We hail from Ireland, England, USA, Canada and Australia, so far - let me know if I missed any countries/continents. We know the family has had at least two castles and one Winery (anyone looked to see if Chateau Kirwan in France has a website?). Personally, I am trying to "get with" the upcoming season (in the "bleegh" mode so far...) and thought perhaps we could all give ourselves a Thanksgiving Treat. We cannot gather as an extended family in person but perhaps we could share our favorite KIRWIN/AN STORIES or RECIPES and post them in a Thanksgiving BLITZ??? I suspect that in sharing our stories we will all know why we belong in this clan! Suggested conversation starters: 1)Tell us a story of a Kirwin relative; good, bad, funny, sad - all accepted! 2)Tell us of your travel experiences to "unearth" Kirwin/ans anywhere, anytime 3)DO pass along any RECIPES that originated with your Kirwin/an roots 4)Tell us about any holiday traditions that you consider to have Kirwin/an roots Got anything else you'd rather share? Share it! It doesn't have to be long and you now have 2.5 weeks notice to prepare! Write something up and begin posting WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25th (while the pies are in the ovens in the USA).... Just think, you have always intended to get "that story" written down... here is your chance! Jana Black Listowner, KIRWIN-L

Stop me if I've already posted this. There is a gravestone in the old Couraganeen churchyard, Bournea (Bourney) Parish, Roscrea, County Tipperary for Edmond KIRWAN, died October 4, 1837, age 55 years. The stone was erected by his wife, Mary LAHEY. That makes Edmond born in 1781 or 1782, which is getting pretty far back in Irish records.
Hi List! Bonnybeth Hyde asked me to post this for her... all replies should go directly to her rather than to the list! Subject: Kirwan et al Reunion Mailing List Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 16:33:49 -0700 From: Bonnybeth Hyde <enbbhyde@hotmail.com> or <enbhyde@uswest.net> Hello there, kin! Sorry I haven't been in touch -- still trying to catch up from the crazy summer I had! I have finally started working on the mailing list for the upcoming Kirwan/Kirwin/... (ok, enough bickering over the spelling!) Reunion to be held in Denver, July 1999! If you would like to be on this list, please e-mail me your information (spouse name included) and I will get going on it. Please use my home e-mails: enbbhyde@hotmail.com (two "b"s) or enbhyde@uswest.net (one "b"). I am putting together the addresses I have so far, and the initial mailing will include everyone, and then once I can get an idea of who is REALLY interested in coming to Denver in July, those people will continue to get the mailing. I could go broke doing this! Has anyone found our rich uncle yet? I could use his help... :-) Start thinking about putting together a poster board that shows your own Kirwan family history (that you know of). That way it can help facilitate the process of finding out more information you may not already have, not to mention how we are ALL related! Best wishes to all, Bonnybeth J. Hyde
Forgot to mention that all this land ownership and British stuff took place in the 1400's.
I have found several books on Irish family names. While I personally don't care much if my long-dead ancestors were royalty or sheep herders, some people apparently do. So I suggest you look for a book called "Irish Family Names -Arms, Origins and Locations" by Brian de Breffny or "Irish Families, Their Names, Arms and Origins" by Edward MacLysaght. Both of these books (and others) lend light on ancient Irish history -- and names. The Kirwans (and that's how it was spelled once it was Anglicized were one of the original true Gaelic families. They were great land owners and leaders in Galway and one of the so-called "Tribes".They were the Gaelic O'Ciardubhain sept.I found many Kirwan graves in the cemeteries outside Dublin years ago -- but that is a long way from where the original tribe lived. They were land owners before the British over ran them and took their land away. There were only two "tribes" of pure Irish (Gaelic)stock -- and the Kirwans were one of them. O'Ciardubhain can be translated (loosely) as DARK. Perhaps because the Kirwans had dark hair. My own Kirwans (from Ireland) had black hair and blue eyes. Carole S.

Somerset and Wicomico Counties Somerset County Marriage Licenses 1796 - 1832 List by GROOM Surname These records were transcribed from microfilm (LDS film 0014417 and 0003602) by Jerry Foard. Says Jerry, I attempted to spell names as found on films .... my pleasure to contribute as researching Maryland from afar is difficult to say the least.... Thanks, Jerry, for providing this data! After Jerry sent this data and I put it up on the web, Dan Thomas generously sorted the data, giving us an A-Z list by GROOM surname, and another A-Z list by BRIDE surname. This makes the data easier to search, and doubles the usefulness of the list. Thanks very much, Dan! The following is a quote from the microfilm: The above list is a list of marriage licences issued by the clerk of the Circuit Court for Somerset County on the dates specified, and contains the names of both white and colored couples without anything to mark distinction, aalthough there are very few colored names in the list. The lists from May 1805 to May 1807 have been lost or mislaid an cannot be found. The balance of the years are complete. Some few names are illegible and some uncertain. Sarah Kirwan married Cornelius DOOLEY (DULEY) perhaps in 1850 in Bourney Parish, Tipperary. Cornelius was born in 1816 and Sarah was born in 1830 (from 1860 NY census, Worcester, Otsego County), so the dates are all reasonable. After Cornelius died before 1870, Sarah KIRWAN Dooley moved to Clinton County, OH with her CHILDREN VALENTINE, CORNELIUS (CONN), ANNA, MARY FRANCES, AND CATHERINE I have located all the descendants of Cornelius and Sarah except the descendants of their daughter,ANNA DOOLEY CREEDON. MARY FRANCES married a GLEASON, the only son of John Gleason and the widon REARDON, nee KILMARTIN. GLEASON and KILMARTIN may also have come from the Bourney region near Roscrea in Tipperary. I am looking for siblings or ancestors of Sarah and Cornelius in either Ireland or the USA. Hello Kirwin Cousins! Just a wee bit of interesting information regarding my ggrandmother, Elizabeth KIRWAN HUGHES DARLINGTON (she was married once before she married my ggrandfather). The information I have found so far indicated both Elizabeth and Francis (my ggrandfather) were born in 1872, and were married in 1894, making them both 22 at the time. I thought this unusual, since I knew Elizabeth was already widowed with at least two children, but whatever... I could not locate a record of her birth either in the years before or after 1872. Even her death certificate indicated that to be the year of her birth. Then, while checking the soundex for the 1920 NYC census (the family emigrated from Dublin), I found her age stated as being 11 years OLDER than my ggrandfather. This made much more sense to me, given the fact that she had three children by her first husband. I went to her grave during my recent visit to NYC, but no date of birth was on the stone, just the date of death. Anyway, I found it to be a bit amusing that she lied about her age on her marriage certificate, my ggrandfather lied for her on her death certificate, but they told the census taker the truth!!!
