    1. [KIRWIN-L] Making the New Year Happy for Rootsweb! please read...
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi group! Glad to see us "waking up a bit" with new posts. Here are a few New Year's Listowner thoughts from your fearless Blarney Tech Alum ;] : FYI, Rootsweb and the existence of our list is in some financial shifting sands right now. I assume some of you have read about the recent acquisition of The Learning Company by Mattel? In case you were not aware, the genealogical buy-outs and mergers in 1998 looked like this: Mindscape (Legacy) bought out Parsons Technology (huge databases plus peripheral supplies and great tech support) then Broderbund (Family Tree maker) bought out Mindscape. Next, The Learning Company bought out Broderbund then The Learning Company bought out Palladium (Ultimate Family Tree and Rootsweb Sponsor). Finally Mattel bought out the Learning Company. Suddenly, left out there are Sierra (which sponsors Cyndi's List which is supplied with webspace by Rootsweb), Brother's Keeper & The Master Genealogist and this as yet undefined conglomerate. WHY AM I TELLING YOU ALL THIS??? As of this month the Rootsweb folks have let Listowners know that the future of Rootsweb suddenly looks quite different as a result. As you know, Rootsweb is here to promote the FREE EXCHANGE of genealogical information. Mattel is clearly a bottom line oriented entity. The following email came to us from Brian Leverich: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first (and more minor) problem is that due to the acquisition of Palladium Interactive by TLC and it effectively being made subordinate to Banner Blue (Broderbund), the Palladium sponsorship check contractually due on 1 December didn't arrive and Palladium / Broderbund were being terrifically vague about when it might arrive. This resulted in Karen and me making an emergency draw on RootsWeb's credit line at Wells Fargo Bank to meet expenses, and ultimately on 19 December we dropped Palladium's banners and announced we had a problem. On 23 December the "1 December" check arrived. End of this story. ### The second (and much more significant) problem is that the acquisition of PI by Banner Blue / Broderbund / TLC / Mattel completely changed the nature of the sponsorship relationship, and it is not clear that RootsWeb will remain in the contract. Jewishgen.org has already dropped Palladium's sponsorship. I have a bad feeling that there are going to be layoffs at Palladium in January, and it is possible that RootsWeb will feel forced to withdraw from the arrangement at that time. We're going to be throwing away about a third of our revenues if that happens. That won't be the end of RootsWeb, but it's certainly going to take a financial situation that is so bad it occasionally sends me into gales of laughter (you gotta laugh or you'd cry over this) and turn it into a truly interesting mess. Oh well. There you have it from the horse's mouth. Cheers, B. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As Brian stated, Rootsweb may be forced to withdraw from the Sponsorship Agreement in order to protect its goals of remaining a publically accessible, low cost entity. Thank goodness Brian and Karen have had the vision to retain enough autonomy that they can do this! Otherwise, Rootsweb could have been absorbed and cut off the web in all this.... This also involves GenConnect, BTW. Here is where you all come in. For $12 per year, you can become a Rootsweb Member. There are over 170,000 folks subscribed to Rootsweb lists. If all give $12 annually to Rootsweb this will give Rootsweb the autonomy they need to survive as a non-profit entity in a capitalistic world. You can join at other levels of support as well and as you can afford it. To do so click here: <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> In this last year, as I could, I "upped" my membership twice from basic membership to Sponsor (so I could start this list!) then to Sponsor Plus (when I was so happy with this list that I became nuts enough to want to adopt another list and begin two more... also, my webpage (with my Kirwin info!) is now on Rootsweb http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/ Karen and Brian were very willing to accomodate the "feast or famine nature" of my personal financial circumstances! I strongly recommend you consider offering your own $$$ support, as you can, to keep Rootsweb afloat. If you have a homepage, consider letting Rootsweb host it - it only costs $50 per year... I dare you to find another ISP as generous who doesn't require blinking advertising on your page! Other ideas are in the works to solicit $$$ support like a Rootsweb thermometer saying for example "$100,000 = a server to hold all the Irish Emigration Records" ( this is an example of what could be possible NOT an actual offering from Rootsweb at the moment - just wanted to wake you back up if I lost you!). It is not my intention to get dialogue going on this list on this topic, let's keep it to KIRWIN/AN research efforts, but feel free to email me privately if you want more info <jblack@marin.k12.ca.us> Jana Black Listowner, KIRWIN-L

    3. Welcome to all our new listmembers! I hope you will find the spirit of this page as gratifying as we "oldsters" have! There are currently about 50 of us joining resources to reconnect our Kirwin/Kirwan/Kerwin/Curwin lines. As Carole recently suggested, we come from "true Irish" stock. We may not be gentry but we are definitely coooool! Bonnybeth has plans for a 1st Annual Reunion underway, email her at Bonnybeth.Hyde@UCHSC.edu or enbbhyde@hotmail.com Just think, this is the time of the year where all over the world, brand new computers have come out of boxes to be put into the hands of new potential Kirwin (etc.) researchers! We have had 6 new subscribers in this last week to our little list alone! This is the time for us to all be extra generous with our patience and our online help as all these newbies will need it! Remember when you first tried and felt "oh-so-dumb" in front of the screen! THIS IS ALSO THE TIME TO REPOST YOUR LINES SO WE CAN ALL REFRESH OUR MEMORIES AS TO WHOM WE HAVE LOOKING FOR WHOM HERE! To post: email <KIRWIN-L@rootsweb.com> (do NOT put the word "request" into the address as you did to subscribe because the post won't post that way!) GENERAL REMINDERS: * We all gather here voluntarily for the free exchange of genealogical information * Please do share, please be nice, please stay on topic, please feel free to email each other off the list if your communication needs to go beyond the scope of the list (note ;] let us know if any of you start dating sucessfully, we Irish are quite curious and we love weddings!) * NOT ALLOWED is any flaming or intimidation (put downs, controversy-creating statements, etc.). If ever you are the recipient (on or off the list as a result of the list) of correspondence which makes you feel personally uncomfortable, EMAIL ME IMMEDIATELY <jblack@marin.k12.ca.us> and I will handle it! * NOT ALLOWED is spamming (use of the list to advertise anything for sale or use of any information found offered on this list for personal gain) I try to keep things pretty casual and this has been a very friendly, trouble free list. I intend to keep it this way! I'm planning my first trip to Ireland for the Spring, I turn 50 in April and IT IS TIME! (sure, send me all your favorite B&B addresses between Dublin and Galway!)......... I look forward to sharing my search efforts for good old Patrick supposedly born March 17, 1801 in Dublin to maybe parents John and Mary Carter Kirwin emigrated 17 August 1848 to New York. He listed different ages on different papers and certainly couldn't write, but he built a good barn, a good family and we are determined to "land him back in Ireland!" I have all descendency info.......;] ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY Hapyy New Year and Happy Hunting! Jana Black Listowner, KIRWIN-L

    1. [KIRWIN-L] My Surnames - and a Success Story!
    2. Hello Kirwan Cousins! Happy New Year, but first my success story!! I have been "found" by a cousin through my web page at Familytreemaker.com!! (After only one year!!). We are related through our DARLINGTON great-great grandfather, and it sure was neat the way we "filled in the blanks" for each other. She was actually a generation ahead of me, and had been to the churchyard in Casteldown, Co Wexford, to visit the graves. The Darlington farm is still in existance, although is now owned by a distant cousin named Byrne. My great grandfather, Francis Darlington, married Elizabeth KIRWAN, so that's what this story has to do with Kirwan's -a stretch, I know, but I had to share! She contacted me the day after Christmas - my best gift!! Now my names: Looking for - KIRWANs from Wicklow. Elizabeth, noted above was the daughter of John KIRWAN and Unknown O'TOOLE. DARLINGTON - KAVANAGH from Wexford. James Darlington, son of Nathaniel and Roseanna Darlington, married Ellen KAVANAGH. >From the North: ROBINSON/HARPER from Belfast. Given name for males was Johnston ROBINSON. One married Mary Jane HARPER (daughter of Simon HARPER), his son married Elizabeth WATT (from Scotland). Elizabeth was the daughter of John WATT and Elizabeth ORNEIL (and variant spellings) Any bites - I feel lucky!!! Mary K

    3. For Jack and others who might be interested in the Kirwan/Kirwin/Kerwin/etc. coat of arms, point your browser to the following address: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Strawn/kirwanco.htm Also, further information may be found in: AUTHOR Burke, John. TITLE Burke's genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry. I know it's fun to see the coat of arms, but bear in mind that just because 'some' Kirwin was landed gentry, that it may not be your line! (I know it isn't mine!) :-( While I'm here, I might as well ask if there are any Mass. or NH researchers out there? I have a James Joseph Kerwin III(b 08 Oct 1906 - Manchester, Hillsborough Co., NH, baptised 11 Oct 1906, Church of St. Anne, Manchester, NH) son of James Joseph Kerwin Sr., (b 08 Aug 1872, d 03 Feb 1917, Man. NH, Occupation Pharmacist)m. Grace J. Kennedy 1899 in Franklin or Man. NH (Grace b 05 Mar 1879, Franklin, NH). James Joseph Kerwin Sr. was son of James Joseph Kerwin and Catherine Quigley, both born Ireland (probably immigrated to Canada). Grace J. Kennedy was the daughter of Patrick Lucias Kennedy (a Hotel Proprieter in Franklin or Manchester NH) and Nancy Gage Green. Patrick Lucias Kennedy gave his b'day as 17 Mar 1849 (as we know, those who did not know their DOB often chose St. Pat's day for it, so his DOB is of course questionable). Any kindred or fellow researchers out there? Thanks! Brenda

    2. Coats of Arms, etc. There are several good reference books on Irish names. The "Irish Families, their names, arms and origins" states that the Kirwans were one of the original 14 (or 13) tribes of Ireland. These names go back a long, long ways. Others are: Athy, Blake, Lynch, Martin, Morris, Skerrett, Bodkin, Browne, Deane, Darcy, Fant, French and Joyce. "Irish Family Names, Arms, Origins and Locations" says that the Kirwans were of native Irish stock, being descendents of O' Ciardubhain sept. The ancestral home was probably Galway, but today the majority live near Dublin. Kerwin is an anglicized spelling of Kirwan and is used in the Dublin area -- usually the Kerwins were professional people, ie: lawyers, chemists, physicians, teachers, etc. Dr. Richard Kerwin was a well-known physician from Dublin was aboard a British vessel captured by The Pilgrim in the English Channel in 1781, during the Revolutionary War. (from, Irish Settlers in America) -- he decided to come here later. The Kirwans of Galway were landed gentry, the Kerwins of Dublin were professionals. Ofcourse, some in both places were poor and uneducated without a doubt -- but it seems clear to me that they were REAL Irish, they were smart and they got tooken by the British unless they converted to the "right" religion. Same old, same old. Incidentally, the Kirwans are in a book called "Irish Pedigrees" by John O'Hart There are two Kirwans of Galway families listed. This goes back to the 17th century, but the Kirwans were in Ireland centuries before then. Some not so scientific notes: Being of Kirwan descent means being Celtic, not Germanic or Norman, etc. The Celts were special people and one trait (so I hear) is dark hair and blue, blue eyes. This interests me because I have five grandchildren with the bluest of blue eyes, though brown and green eyes run through the parent's generation -- it is as if the blue blue eyes of Celts insist on returning, given the slightest chance to do so. Oh yes, all the grandchildren, save one have dark, dark hair as well. Carole S.

My name is David(Joseph Thomas) Kirwin (dave is fine!) and thought I'd found out a bit about my surname and history. Being an artist I have tracked down the coat of arms for Kirwin and a vague description of how it came to be, but i would like more info than that. I would really like to know if the coat of arms I have is correct given the amount of variations on our name. My family history is very short in the knowledge department. My grandad (Jack Joseph Kirwin) was born in Ireland in 1903, no location althought my father (Brian Joseph Kirwin) recalls that his grandfather lived in a suburb of Dublin called Butostown (?)!!, and he had a brother was called Joe and lived in Blackrock. Jack had one brother and two sisters, Jimmy, Mona and May. Aunty May has passed on, so has I believe has Mona, who was a lady of the cloth. Anything else is vague memories - my grandparents left little in the way of "solid" history....dunno if anyone can help? (or is vaguely interested!!!hahaha).:) happy new year! Dave

    3. The book is "A Farewell to Famine," by Jim Rees, Arklow Enterprise Center, Arklow, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, 1994. ISBN 0 9522029 5 6, paperback and 0 9522029 0 5, hardcover. Here are the KERWIN names among "The Emigrants" with their ages: Catherine and Winnefred aren't marked as being in the same family, but the others are: KERWIN Catherine 18 KERWIN James 22 KERWIN James 60 KERWIN John 24 KERWIN John 40 KERWIN Winnefred no age given The emigrants arrived in Liverpool from Ireland in October, 1850. The Ticonderoga left Liverpool October 24, 1850 and arrived at New Orleans December 3, 1850. I haven't read the whole book yet, but it sounds as though the destination was meant to be Fort Smith, Arkansas, but some went to St Louis, and others further north to Wexford, Iowa. The Fitzwilliam estate in Co. Wicklow seemed to be where most of the emigrants came from.

    3. Twas the Night Before Christmas: Genealogist's Version "Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and the such Were proof that my work had become much to much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and of such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I forgot. Had I not been so busy with grandparent's wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer; I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear? But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the housetop the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys, and old Santa Claus too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. The TV antenna was no match for their horns, And look at our roof with hoof-prints adorned. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa - KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy; When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you", Santa grinned. As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amazement - the cover it read "Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead." "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug," He said as he gave me a a great Santa Hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folks who can't find a thing. Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team which then rose like the down of a thistle And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family History is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!" ;] Jana

    3. Hi Mary Kay, >>> John and Mary Jane moved to Dublin and he was a policeman there >>> until his death on 14 July, 1892 I just thought to add that while John might have been a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary ( RIC), but if he was policeman in Dublin he was probably a member of the Dublin Municipal Police (DMP). This was a separate entity from the RIC. While the RIC was almost a military unit the DMP was only a police force. The difference in the force was pronounced enough so that when Ireland wins independence the RIC is disbanded while the DMP is incorporated into the Garda (Irelands current national police force). I have a very good book on the history of the RIC written by Jim Herilhy, who is currently writing a book on the DMP. 3. Hi list, It is not too late to offer Thanksgiving posts - I like what I've seen! Here is some intro info from a new member, welcome Jim! We all will be excited to see what transpires from the inquiries he and his sister are making. Anyone see anything familiar? "My grandpa was born probably in the 1870's. My father was born in USA 1912. GP james came to USA very early 1900's. Worked for the Pinkerton's. My sister has a request with them for any info re his employment. My father told me that GP was a very tight lipped guy. never learned much about him. Do know that he taught Business Law night school for manhattan College. I will contact the university to see if they can provide any info. believe my family came from Galway. Best wishes...Jim Kirwan" Happy hunting all, Jana
