    2. Tom Fitzsimmons
    3. There is a suburb of Townsville, Queensland, Australia named Kirwan, and I had a note giving a little information on the origin of the name: "... a Mr Joe Kirwan owned the land and started subdividing it in 1858."

    1. [KIRWIN-L] "Free" way to support Rootsweb!
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, I am copying this message to all of my lists. There has been lots of conversation lately about the future of Rootsweb given the corporate buy-outs of Broderbund and Palladium, etc. into the mega-consortium of Mattel and the concurrent "trickle down" effects for armchair genealogists. Palladium has been the corporate sponsor for Rootsweb as you may or may not know. Rootsweb must now work quickly to protect its goals of offering a continuing free exchange of genealogical information for folks who choose to share such data on the net. Additionally, GenForum has been swept up into the Broderbund umbrella and the news this week announced that Yahoo is buying Geocities. For me, Rootsweb is becoming about all that is left for the common folk who may not have the expendable cash to "pop" for each new CD that may or may no toffer me one or two pieces of usable dat in my research - if it is correct and not misreported, unsubstantiated data! The question was recently posed as to how anyone who did not feel they were in a position to offer money could still support Rootsweb with their time. Here is a response which all listowners have been given permission to post. If you fall into this category, I encourage you to contact Kay! 1. [KIRWIN-L] Tipperary Kirwin in Australia
    2. Tom Fitzsimmons
    3. This is on the Co. Tipperary Historical Society's "Who's been writing to us in 1999" page. http://homepages.iol.ie/~tipplibs/Mail.htm "Hi! I dont know if you can help but here goes anyway! My wife, June and I recently bought a property in the mountains south of Mudgee in New South Wales, Australia. The property name is KIRWIN and was originally a land grant to a Timothy Kirwin in the year 1863 after he had emigrated from County Tipperary Ireland. Would you have any records that show a Timothy Kirwin who died in this area in the year 1916 aged 78. That makes his year of birth 1838. It seems he carried out farming on this property together with his wife Jane. They had a son Timothy, perhaps other sons and daughters. Timothy senior and his wife are buried in Windeyer cemetry. Jane died in 1939 at the age of 91. They had a daughter Hannah who died in 1924 aged 47. If you have any information on this family, I would appreciate an e-mail from you. Thank you and all the best in 1999. Karl & June Ritar kirwin@winsoft.net.au"

    1. [KIRWIN-L] petition
    2. Tadhg Kirwan
    3. A chairde; Recently I received this e-mail from Laure' LeDuc conserning a petition signing to help an Irish Comrade stay in America. I think this is a good idea as he has done nothing wrong here and emigrated legally. The only reason he is being considered for deportation is because the british government is pressuring our man prez. billy into this. Just a side not, funny isn't it that the last preson to help defeat the Irish was "william of orange" and now we have "william of arkansas" working against us. Anyway, please go to the web page http://fonc.logicle.com/ and sign the petition - maybe with our help we can turn the treatment of Catholic Irish and POW's around. Go raibh mile maith agat T. Kirwan ============================================================ ====================== A chairde, We are trying to collect signatures to help Noel Cassidy remain in the US with his family. A native of Co. Monoghan, near the border Noel was always interested in Gaelic culture. He was first arrested at the age of nine for selling Easter Lilies ( which are associated with the 1916 rebellion). In the 60's Catholics, inspired but Martin Luther King Jr. and the American civil rights movement, began to push for civil rights in the North. With the beginnings of the civil rights movement widespread persecution of Catholics began. Noel helped people fleeing the Loyalist programs in the North to find shelter in the Republic of Ireland. He joined Sinn Fein and became active in political and cultural activities. In February 1978 Noel was stopped North of the border and taken to Gough Barracks for interrogation. He was "interrogated" for 3 days. When this failed to yield anything, a document ( not in his hand writing ) mysteriously appeared in Noels Pocket. Of course he had been searched when he was first arrested, but we must assume a miracle allowed the document to so conveniently appear, when nothing else could be be found to charge Noel with. This document had the names of UDR members on it. Noel served 13 months in prison awaiting trial. He was offered a chance to leave prison and go free with time served if he would confess to possession of the document, but he still maintained his innocence. He was then sentenced to two more years in Long Kesh. At this time Republican prisoners were "on the blanket" a protest in which, demanding their rights as POW's the inmates refused to wear a convicts uniform. They went naked except for one thin blanket, and at times even this was taken from them. They spent 24 hours a day in their cells, no use of exercise yards, or even toilets. They were subjected to routine beatings and abuse often soaked down with hose and left cold and naked in their cells. Another deal was offered Noel, wear the prison uniform and be out in 5 months. Noel refused and spent the whole two years on the blanket. Shortly after his release the prisoners went on Hunger Strike. Ten young men including Bobby Sands would die on that strike. Noel came to America to bring word of their sacrifice and the terrible abuses on the H-Blocks to the American people. He now has an American wife and child and has been a productive citizen for over 16 years. But he is facing deportation because he was once imprisoned in Long Kesh. Our country is supposed to offer political asylum to those whose "life liberty or freedom is threatened on account of race, religion, or political opinion" (INA act 208 Asylum). US courts have granted political asylum on a number of occasions due to the conditions that existed in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately the federal govt often tries to over rule these decisions. In one case the govt stated it would continue to appeal as many times as necessary until a "favourable" decision was reached. We are asking everyone who receives this letter and wants to help Noel to sign his petition at: http://fonc.logicle.com/ If you have trouble accessing this petition contact me at laureleduc@earthlink.net Also please forward this letter to at least 5 people, this way it can go out like a chain letter to as many people. Also for those of you willing, I am trying to assess how useful this method is in gathering signatures, so if you want to help me in this send me an email that says " I signed" to laureleduc@earthlink.net . You will not be contacted in anyway unless you request further information, or to be added to a mailing list for other Irish and human rights issues. Thank You Laure' LeDuC

    2. Chris and Kathy Kirwan
    3. Peter- You should know that Kirwan is a fairly common name in Ireland. The Griffith's Valuation of Ireland (1850's) recorded about 85 Kirwan households in Co. Wexford. In researching my own Kirwan line I came across a John Kirwan who was born (christened) Aug 12, 1846 in the RC parish of Oylesgate, which is very near to Ennsicorthy. John was the son of Daniel and Bridget Sinnott Kirwan. He had a twin sister Anne, and older brothers Thomas and Peter (also twins, b. 3/9/1835, presumably deceased), Thomas (b. 4/30/1841), and Peter and Michael (also twins, b. 12/26/43). My best suggestion to you would be to concentrate on looking for the marriage record for John and Elizabeth, both in England and Ireland. Best of luck, Chris Kirwan Peter Cousins wrote: > Hi > I have just joined the Kirwan list and new to genealogy and computers so > please be patient. > > I am seeking information on John Kirwan born (gt gt gf) in Wexford Ireland > C.1846 and moved to Liverpool at a later day and Married Elizabeth ??? born > in Ireland in C.1847. 3. Hello everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful and safe holiday season. Have a great time researching in Ireland Jana. We all know you will have a very good time and will find your connections. I personally have never been to Ireland, maybe one day......... Just to refresh my connections here on the site: My gggrandfather John W. KIRWIN m. Katherine KENNEDY in IL; my ggrandfather was John Francis KIRWIN m. Katherine Louise KREHBIEL in KS. They had 5 children: William, Della Barbara, John R., Helen Louise and Grover KERWIN. (The 'i' was dropped somewhere in the two latter generations) My grandmother was Della Barbara KERWIN m. Clifford Arthur MELLINGTON; they had 2 sons. Arthur Ervin and Chester Leroy MELLINGTON; Arthur Ervin MELLINGTON is my father who m. Ella Marie ALLEN. I had 4 brothers. There is one living KERWIN (carrying the surname, that is)that I know of and that is a grandson of William, his name is Brian. I do not know where he is as his parents divorced many years ago and Brian and his sister Sharon were in their mother's custody. I believe their mother Betty, remarried and moved back east, Brian was known to have been in TX for a while. Brian would have been born in the mid-late 40s. He was born in KS, possibly Wichita or Eureka. If anybody knows anything about Brian I would like to hear from you. Thank you for any help that is forthcoming. Beverly bev-ben@swbell.net

    2. Chris and Kathy Kirwan
    3. Welcome Dave! My great grandfather Michael Kirwan was born in 1865 to Thomas Kirwan and Catherine Byrne. Thomas worked in the mines at Avoca (where the current tv show Ballykissangel is set!) in Co. Wicklow. Michael and his brother Philip came to Boston; their brothers James and Thomas wound up in Foxrock, Co. Dublin. Foxrock is about 6 or 7 km South of Dublin City, and about a mile from Blackrock, which in turn is not even a km from Booterstown ( I suspect that your Butostown is actually Booterstown). I don't know if I have any record of your family, but I can tell you that there is a Joseph Kirwan buried 4/16/1911 in Blackrock Cemetery, with his wife Catherine, who died 6/18/1907, and that they had children named Catherine, James, Joseph, and Monica Mary (who died 11/23/1984 and is buried with her parents). With the facts that you have, I'd suggest that the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses could be a great start for you. Let me know if you need help.
