Hello all, Thanks to Peggy Lynn Rowe, we have our first set of miscellaneous KIRWIN charts posted. I have also added links to some terrific information John McGowan, (our MD Carrawan connection) found and to his site which has lots of background information on the Kirwin/an lines. If that is not enough, for your viewing pleasure, I have added my best attempt to decipher what "A guide to Irish roots; including Celts, Vikings, Normans, Kings, Queens and Commoners" by William and Mary Durning suggests is the KIRWIN/AN lineage back to Adam (you have to look it up from Noah on your own ;]) Take a look and enjoy <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/1kirwin.html> My offer still stands to upload your family group charts so we can all look over each other's shoulders and try to sort them out.... Jana
I am trying to find information on Ellen Kirwin b. 25 Apr 1853 in Towanda, Bradford, PA. She died 17 Aug 1910 in Buffalo, NY She was married to Daniel E. Nehin who changed the last name to Foley at some point around 1900. Ellen and Daniel were married in Hornellsville, NY 28 May 1872. Ellen's parents were Thomas Kirwin and Anastasia (Anna) Ryan. I believe both were born in Ireland. Any information on this line would be very helpful! Jeff Habicht e-mail: jhabicht@tabor.pvt.k12.ma.us <mailto:jwright@tabor.pvt.k12.ma.us>
Hello all, The KIRWIN list is one of several mailing lists I maintain. Happily for me it is a small list which means it is essentially trouble free. I have been thinking about the nearly 3 years the list has existed and about what progress I have seen made. I realize that like another small list I maintain, progress has been slow. I have therefore decided to extend to members of the list the same offer I have made to another small list. As many of you know, I maintain a personal website called Climbing the Branches at Rootsweb. Currently it holds only information directly related to my own Kirwin lines. For the millennium, I have decided to try a small shift to aid our collective research. If you want to send me a GedCom or some other form of communication outlining your known, proved Kirwin lines, I will chart your family groups and post them to my website free of charge. See my website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/1kirwin.html for the format. Here are my rules: 1) I will give you an email link as submitter (if you would like that) or not (as you prefer) 2) I will not post information about any generation that still has living members (so, if all your own parents, aunts and uncles are gone but if the children of your grandparents' siblings are alive, the data does not get posted) 3) I will only post data until it runs out of Kirwins (i.e., until your mainline goes to a daughter who married into another surname) 4) The material must be your own proven data and not anything "grabbed" and/or not proved from the internet. 5) I will not sell the information nor post it anywhere that someone else can sell it. 6) I will do this for free for the benefit of all descendants and it will be posted where it can be accessed for free. I will probably ask a couple of you that I have known several years now and trust to be my "backup" in this effort. If for some reason I can no longer maintain the website, I will contact the list and ask someone to come forward and take it over with the same understandings. I will do this as I can, time permitting. If we gather enough information, I will ask the list to consider setting up a Kirwin/an Family Association and post everything there. If you have web skills, and are willing to pitch in, let me know. If you have reason to think this is a lousy idea, please email me off the list. If you like the idea and want to participate, note I only include vital data on my charts, so you don't need to include notes. etc., so you can skip sending it. I am taking a deeeeep breath and hitting the send key! Jana Black

Hello all, If you have tried to already or have research still to do in Ireland, this letter from the Council of Irish Genealogical Organisations will be a very important piece of information for you to be aware of! CIGO's objective is to get the GRO in Ireland to "deposit microfilm copies of the important national archive that are the civil registers of birth, death and marriage, with the accompanying indexes, at The National Library of Ireland." Next step is to get it all online, right???? ;) If you subscribe to any other Irish surnames lists, you might want to pass the information along. Here is the link to the accompanying online petition you can sign and send which must be submitted before February 1, 2000 to be included in what is presented! http://world.std.com/~ahern/petition.htm Jana Black ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Council of Irish Genealogical Organisations 21 St Brigid's Grove, Dublin 5, Ireland November 1999 Dear Reader, As you may be aware earlier in the year CIGO co-ordinated a public meeting, attended by over one hundred people, to discuss the inadequate and deteriorating service supplied to the general public by the Department of Health & Children at the General Register Office, Lombard Street, Dublin. Despite intense lobbying by CIGO and various other organisations and individuals over the last number of years the Department has done almost nothing to enable its staff at the GRO to supply the quality of service the GRO knows is so desperately needed. The Public Meeting was attended by many focused and articulate individuals who voiced imaginative and pragmatic solutions to the problems encountered at the GRO. The salient points regarding the Department's provision of service to the public in the short term are as follows: there is simply too little space provided for the number of people needing access to the indexes; the availability to the public of only one set of index volumes leads to a situation where the volume a researcher requires is likely already in use; there is never enough staff in the Public Search Room to assist the public; the programme to improve facilities and expand the floor space of the Public Search Room begun in the early months of this year should be completed; to ease congestion in the GRO the Department of Health & Children should present microfilm copies of its civil registers of birth, death and marriage to various national and international bodies and in light of the above the Department should abandon its proposals to increase the public search fees. Shortly CIGO will be completing its initial report, drawn from the conclusions of the CIGO Public Meeting, which is to be presented to the Ministers for Health & Children and Social Welfare and in due course various other interested groups and parties. However, you can help by signing and distributing the attached petition which CIGO hopes will encourage the Minister for Health & Children to present microfilm copies of the GRO's civil registers of birth, death and marriage to the National Library of Ireland where researchers will be able to view them free of charge. The completed petition 'forms', which you are encouraged to photocopy and distribute, should be returned to the secretary of CIGO as soon as possible, but no later than the 1st February 2000. Thanking you for your support, Desmond K. Clarke Hon. Secretary, CIGO
Hello, I was wondering if anyone has access to the CD-ROM of "Soldiers Died in the Great War", which lists the names and birthplaces of all the Commonwealth soldiers who died in World War 1. The hardcopy version of this work is 80 volumes long, and the Public Record Office in London (Kew) has some sort of database. The CD-ROM came out last year. If anyone does have access to this work, I was wondering if you could do a simple search for me - only one name, so it should take a matter of seconds. I cannot do the search myself as I cannot find a local library that has purchased the CD-ROM. Thanks, Scott Kerwin Vancouver, B.C. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Hi If anyone has information on David Kirwan, born in Ennis,Ireland about 1795 I would like to hear from them........Thank you..Phyll
HI, I'm searching for info. on Judge Solomon F. Kirwan of Taylors Island, Dorchester Co., MD. b. abt. 1803. Can anyone help? Lew
SUBJECT: KIRWIN, PATRICK - migrated to Quebec City in 1840's. Patrick and Margaret(McElroy)and their children all migrated to Quebec City in 1840's. Patrick was born in Ireland around 1789. Their children were all married in Quebec City, most of them at Notre Dame Basilica: Catherine=Terence Granary Alice=Patrick Farrell Mary=John McCormick Johanna=Archibald Kerr William=Ellen Maguire John=Isabella Benson The last mentioned, John, my great grandfather and his wife Isabella Benson, my great grandmother, migrated about 1870 to Albany, NY, my home town. From 1870, I have a complete record of all the descendants of John and Isabella Benson. With the help of Professor Larkin Kirwin, past Rector of Laval University in Quebec, I found all this information 20 years ago. Last year my brother and I went to Quebec Cityu for THE IRISH SUMMER(L'ete irlandais), commemorating the 150th anniversary of the famine immigrants to Quebec, as well as the tragic events at Grosse Ile. Dr. Kirwin's family came at the same time as mine, but so far we cannot make a connection. Has anyone run across information on this branch of the Kirwin's. I'm stuck on tracing my Quebec City Kirwans back to a place in Ireland. Any suggestions? Many thanks! Art Kirwin, Raleigh, NC
Thanks to these links, I have found James Kerwin who left Quebec and immigrated to Cook County (ILL) to marry Mollie McFadden in October 1890 ! I would be very excited to learn of their descendants. Through Family Tree Maker sites, I found a son Gregory Kerwin (1894-1954). They also had a daughter Iris Kerwin. I am a descendant of James' brother Luke. Their father Michael Kirwan had come from Ireland and settled in Quebec City. Terry Kerwin Montreal
Hello all, Maybe it is the weather beginning to change, maybe it is the days getting shorter, but I am beginning to think of Winter kinds of activites... I think I have mentioned this before, but I just took a look and we aren't using them, so I am gonna PLUG UM again! WE have available to us a whole suite of GenConnect Boards ... These boards allow any of you to easily put data on the web without knowing html or any of that stuff. It is as easy as typing an email! You know how we all accumulate PILES of paper as we research? I am sure that you, like me, have accumulated copies of Bible Records, Deeds, Obits, Pensions and Wills that are authentic "family" documents but which may or may not turn out to relate to your specific lines. If you take those docs and type them onto the appropriate GenConnect Boards, they will be there for the person who does need them! And, that person can contact you and you can even send it to them if you want... The best part of all is that whatever you post will get indexed automatically by Rootsweb so whenever anyone does a search on KIRWIN/AN, they will be directed to our Boards! By helping others, we help ourselves! If you haven't fiddled with these resources yet, here is the "front door" (just type in the surname of your choice...) <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html> If you want to see an example where folks are uploading data and it is working well, check out <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/m/a/MATLOCK/wills> To see the index, get yourself to a page, then click on the "Surname List" link - note how the index picks up ALL the various kinds of records pertinent to this surname! Soooooooo, here is a way you can clean out your piles WITHOUT guilt!!! The links to the KIRWIN spelling are are below, if the document you have uses a spelling variation, use the FamAssoc.html address above to get to the board, put it where you think it belongs, it will all get indexed! http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/queries http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/bible_records http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/biographies http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/deeds http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/obituaries http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/pensions http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/k/i/KIRWIN/wills I will try to begin putting stuff up as time permits myself... hope to see this resource grow! Jana
P.S. The snail mail I received was for an Irish tourism magizine and I think it may have come from another sorce as I had inquired to 1-800-shamrock. Hope this helps but again I am interested in a meeting. Richard A. Curwin
I also got a piece of mail about vacation in Ireland. Not a big deal, handled by a flick of the wrist in the direction of the waste basket but yes, I am interested in a clan reunion this summer. The problem is that I cannot make a connection to Ireland and what if I'm actually English and this all a plot to get me tarred and feathered? Just because your Pariniod doesn't mean they are NOT out to get you. My liniage may be from any where but my heart is Irish, hope that is enough. Richard A. Curwin Apache Junction Az.
Hello all, For those of you who might have Kirwin/ans in Illinois... take a look at this! <http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/marriage.html> I typed in a variety of spellings and came up with LOTS of results! Have fun... Jana
Hello list, I want to apologize on the list for the behavior of "Tadhg" (I never have had his real name, another "red flag")? As listowner, it is my job to be sure we stick to the topic on this list and act like adults. I have had trouble with this person in the past trying to introduce politics (whenever you gather two or three Kirwins in the same place, you just may instigate lively argument around anything controversial, I know better than to let THAT on this list!) and I had warned him to use the list appropriately. When I did so, he unsubscribed so I figured the problem was gone. Paranoid, no we are not that. Interested in keeping the list friendly for all, yes, indeed, this is what I will insist upon. I noticed he had resubbed recently and I noted his post which seemed innocent enough (except for the fact that it ignored the work Bonniebeth did this summer in organizing and holding our First Annual KIRWIN/AM Family Reunion in Colorado). This latest, however, is the last straw for me! I will not tolerate any flaming on this list! I agree fully with Carole (who BTW is one of our original subscribers, a terrific contributor and certainly not a newbie!) that her experience has to be more than co-incidental. Please let me know (off the list!) if anyone else who replied to his post gets junk mail from the same organization. This is unacceptable and Rootsweb can handle it easily enough. I apologize to Carole and to the list that I gave this person another forum to create dissension. IMHO, his rude characterizations show nothing but immaturity, arrogance and a total disdain for common courtesy. I have put him where he will not be allowed to resubscribe again. This is certainly NOT the way to engender rapport nor to encourage folks to come to a reunion! Please do not pick up on this thread on the list... let's just keep it to genealogy exchange, and relevant KIRWIN/AN good stuff! Thanks all! I just recieved the following post from Carole S. I did not send her any junk mail from "Ireland Vacations 99", and I am not smart enuf to get anyones address from just their name and email address. Ms. Carole S. must be some kinda newbie to the internet and very paronoid about the way it works. Yes - I am putting together a Clann Gathering in Claregalway for next summer - but the response I have gotten from the KIRWIN List has only been five people and that is not enuf to get Cregg Castle. We need a minimum of 16 people to rent the castle for the whole week and the price is someplace around $6300.00. I will be posting further updates as I get the information. In the meantime anyone that is interested can write me back with ideas of what they want to do for the week. Again - I am sorry that Carole got junk mail - but I think if she was to research it she would find the right people that sent it to her. Has this list gotten that paronoid to assume all unsolicited email is some sort of scam. Tadhg ============================= Post from carole S. ================= I responded to e-mail about reunion by e-mail, only. I responded to e-mail about reunion by e-mail, only. IN RETURN I received a large packet of travel info via REGULAR MAIL (from Ireland Vacations 99 - in New Jersey) --- I DID NOT GIVE THE PERSON WHO POSTED THE MESSAGE ABOUT THE REUNION MY STREET ADDRESS. The person sending the original message was "TAD" at fenian54@hotmail. This person was able to find my street address via my first and last name -- and e-mail address. This would be possible for almost anyone listed in a telephone directory -- but my address is NOT listed in a telephone directory. I plan to report this incident to AOL. Ireland sounds lovely, but this is not the way to get me to visit!!!! Carole S.
