Hello I just picked up Family Tree software and found a reference to a Patrick Kirwin, b 1854 in Missouri Father: KIRWIN, MICHEL Mother: NOONAN, SARAH I'm really looking for Maurice J. Kirwin, b 1852 and have hit a wall. Could Patrick be his younger brother? After all, how many Kirwins could there have been in Missouri in 1854? If anyone has any info on either of these two dead guys, I sure would appreciate it. Meanwhile I will continue searching and learning and if I find anything, guess where I'll post it? Thanks, James Kirwin Wilmington, DE USA __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com/
This was forwarded to me from a lady who saw it on Tipperary-L listserver. My great grandfather, his wife and their children emigrated from Bournea Parish, near Roscrea, Co. Tipperary in early 1861. Old letters mention a sister Margaret and a brother Jeremiah who had emigrated earlier. John lived in Clinton County, Ohio in the late 1860s. Tom Fitzsimmons. The Spring, 2000 issue of the Journal of the Genealogical Society of Ireland contains an article entitled "Some Unusual Irish Connections" by Bob Burke. In that article, Mr. Burke recounts his family history, and along the way, he mentions some Kirwan connections which may be of interest. "Louisa Jane Collingwood was married to my great great grandfather, James Dominick Burke. His father, Frank Burke of Becan in Co. Mayo married Marry Kirwan from Co. Galway in 1764. The Kirwans were wealthy and well connected, Mary's mother being a Bermingham of the Lord Athenry line. These marriages into the Kirwan and Collingwood families are a reminder of the many Irish connections with the wine trade in France. For example, the Chateau Domaine de Lasalle, just outside the village of Chantenac, was acquired by Sir John Collingwood around 1750. One of his daughters married Mark Kirwan from Galway and he inherited the Chateau and vineyards in 1781. The name was then changed to Kirwan. Mark Kirwan sired eleven children before losing his head and his property in the French revolution. Subsequently the family regained possession of the Chateau, known to this day as Chateau Kirwan."
Hello all, I have just received a note from Bonnybeth who is happily, busily tending 4 month old Kirwan Hyde. Delighted to report all are thriving! Bonnybeth, however, has received a note from Neil Kirwan who potentially was planning a Montana reunion this summer which she has asked me to pass along.... Due to illness of a family member leading to an open heart surgery in Aug. or Sept., he will not have the time to organize a Montana reunion this summer.... I want to accompany this announcement with our best wishes to Neil and family as they all take care of themselves in stressful times! Neil, we will hold you in our hearts.... Now, my branch of the family has a Pot Luck Memorial Day reunion in Tulsa, OK for the Kirwin/Carpenter Clan out of Shelby, IN, Neodesha, KS and Jenks, OK every year and tho they would probably drop their collective teeth to see new faces at this longtime event, I know they would be welcoming at the magic word "Kirwin." Let me know if this is interesting to you and I'll get you the details.... Beyond that, Patrick Kirwin, my "other" cousin had suggested a reunion in Kirwin, KS for St. Patrick's Day NEXT year to commemorate the 200th birthday of our Patrick b. 17 March 1801 in Dublin. Pat teaches English and is often buried in correcting papers, etc. except during school breaks, so to my knowledge, that idea remains "an idea" only for now. I am delighted to report I will be traveling this year - to Egypt as Tech Support for a teacher who is taking a group of 8 "gifted and talented" 6th graders on tour to create an interactive website covering the Ancient Egypt curriculum! Very exciting! Then, on my b'day last week, my four children astonished my husband and me by announcing they were combining my 50 and 51st b'days, our 30th anniversary, my husband's b'day and Mother's/Father's Day into one gift................ .........a trip to Ireland, England and Scotland in the Fall!!!! Our youngest finishes high school in June and for the first time in 26 years, we will have NO UNDERAGE children at home! We are off, with gusto! This will be a genealogy trip of course ;] Unfortunately, this means there is no way I can organize an reunion either.... SO! Who of you is out there with the time and/or energy to create a gathering? Go ahead and use the list to think out loud if you want, putting our collective heads together usually produces the best results! We have a "good group" here and small and scattered tho we may be, we are very important to us, right??? It'll be fun to see what we can come up with! Jana
I am related to Joseph B. Kerwin, found through the Immigrant Savings Bank. His parents match a gravestone photo that has been in the family. His father was Patrick, born in County Clare. Does anyone know anything else about him? Which ship Patrick and Bridget may have been on? Thanks, Nancy Kerwin

Hello all, This was posted to another list - could be of interest to some of us ;] Jana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There's a new area of Irish info material I've been promising myself to look into. I don't know if you ever heard of the Immigrant Savings Bank in N.Y.C. It was founded, during the Irish influx, by a group of educated Irish business men. As I said, most of the Irish could not read or write. They lived in crowded quarters. They worked and tried to save money. The problem was, where to hide the money so it would be safe. Putting it under the mattress was unsafe because that's the first place a crook would look. The bank opened with a different way of making deposits and withdrawals. When doing business, the Mick had a code he gave the teller. He gave his name, verbally, and perhaps his mother's maiden name. There were about 3 or 4 different, personal, pieces of family info on his ledger card. Sometimes, the village or county he migrated from was listed. Needless to say, the bank became a big success and is still in business today. Recently, the bank wanted to utilize the basement space the old records were stored and was making plans to throw them out. Fortunately, someone with a brain in his head stepped in and put a stop to the plans. The N.Y.C. Public Library was contacted and asked if it wanted the records. It said, "Yes". Its taking time for the library to sort out the records so they can be accessed. However," They say the records are in pretty good shape and have quite a bit of info, that maybe cannot be found elsewhere". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I seem to recall first catching wind of this about a year ago.... But, this post is brand new... If anyone learns the status of plans to make these records available, would you post it to the list, please?

According to some information from the STARKEY clan other names that might be connected to the 14th Ward in Brooklyn and related to some of the above are CLEARY, CANTWELL, CORCORAN, QUINN, O'BRIEN, WALSH, AND AHEARN.
re CIGO petition I have signed this petition as I have had experience at the Dublin General Register Office. I would strongly recommend those who have experience of researching there or experience of writing to them to add their voices to the petition. Despite the increasing importance of genealogy in Irish tourism and in the international image of the country, the Department of Health who run the GRO see any improvement as a low priority. Richard Callanan London, England.
As I recall there were two suggestions for future reunions: one in Ireland at the old Castle, one in Kirwin, Kansas. Both sound fantastic, though I wonder where we would stay in Kirwin, Kansas -- think it's a very small place. There is a Kirwin Reservoir and a Kirwin Wildlife Preserve there in Kansas, as well. I believe they were named for a Col. Kirwin who did something wonderful during the Civil War--although he came from Tennessee or someplace, he was not a Kansan. What about the reunions????? C. Hello, Those of you with Irish roots may be interested in adding your voice to this message. If you manage mailing lists for Irish surnames, you might pass the information along. For further information you can check out this website: http://world.std.com/~ahern/petition.htm >From that website you can click on the link to the CIGO (Council of Irish Genealogical Organisations) page which details the involved circumstances and has links to the National Library of Ireland site. I have heard many many people discuss the frustration they have felt in getting all the way to Ireland only to have research efforts thwarted due to this state of affairs. If we join in the voice, perhaps they will have it all organized in time for our own research ventures ;] Jana Black, Marin County, CA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ St Patrick's Day GRO Protest On Thursday 16 March please join the Day of Protest to express dissatisfaction with the understaffing, under-funding and general neglect of the General Register Office in Dublin, Ireland, by the Department of Health & Children.(The GRO is closed on ST Patrick's Day). If you wish to take part please communicate your concern by email to BOTH of the following: Department of Health & Children: queries@health.irlgov.ie Department of Tourism, Sport & Recreation: dtsr@iol.ie If you live within the Republic of Ireland please ALSO telephone your message to the Department of Health & Children at (from within 01 area) 6313800 or (Lo-Call) 1890-200311 and ask for the Minister's office. Below the line is a suggested wording, but you may send whatever message you wish. Bridget (Grouser) Murphy - --------------------------------------------------------------------- The General Register Office is an important genealogical repository for people of Irish heritage world wide. The Department of Health & Children must provide it with adequate staffing and funding to allow it to offer the level of service maintained in former years. It is not acceptable that it should be closed at lunchtime. It is not acceptable that paying customers should be limited in the number of records they may check by purchasing photocopies. It is not acceptable that there is only one set of index books for public inspection. To free up the GRO's Search Room copies of these records and index books should be made available as well elsewhere. Long term promises about a computerised index do not address GRO users' immediate needs.

I recently obtained from the Dun Laoghaire Genealogical Society a copy of People of Wicklow 1798, The Rebellion, by Pat Power. The book compiles the names, affiliation, domicile, and remarks about Wicklow persons listed in original sources as having participated in the Rebellion. The following Kirwans (only the variant spellings are spelled out below), all of whom were United Irishmen (rebels) are listed: Daniel, Narraghmore, shot on Dunlavin Green Dennis, County Wicklow, John, Rathdown, Sergeant Laurence, Newtown Mount Kennedy Lory, Carnew, Larry? Shot in Ball Alley, Carnew Martin, Addown Michael, Ballyneely Murtagh, Killacloran/Annacurragh Nicholas, Killacloran/Annacurragh Peter, Co. Wicklow Richard, Talbotstown Thomas, Narraghmore, Shot on Dunlavin Green ?, Kilcoole ?, Ballyneely Kirwin, Daniel, Killacloran/Annacurragh, killed in the rebellion Kerevan, Daniel, Baltinglass, Captain, Killed on Vinegar Hill The author notes that the locations listed should be taken with a grain of salt, as they sometimes refer to a battle the named person was in, rather than their residence. That's all the info there is. Best wishes to all... Chris Kirwan
SORRY, I THINK MAURICE IS A DIFFERENT BRANCH OF THE KIRWAN FAMILY. THANKS FOR THE INQUIRY. -VICKI :)
Hello I am looking for information on Maurice J. Kirwin, born Feb 22, 1852 in St.Louis MO. He married Ellen Tiernan, born in Ireland c 1854, father Barry Tiernan, died Dec 21, 1901. They had 5 children: Maurice J. jr, George W., Robert, Rose and Violet. Most of their descendents stayed in St.Louis; however, a son of George W. Kirwin, George Francis Kirwin, moved to the Chicago area. The St.Louis Kirwins are pretty well documented. What I really need are the names of Maurice J. Kirwin's parents. Thanks James Kirwin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
Hi all, Gee, it kind of feels like a birth announcement each time I get to do this! I am happy to announce the addition of a new family chart to our collection. To see the Descendants of Michael Kerwin/Kirwan - Galway, IRE > Cook Co., IL look here: <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/1kirwin.html> I have heard from a couple of other folks who are getting their data ready to send for posting! Looks like we may be "on a roll" in time for St. Paddy's Day! And, thanks to my cousin Patrick Owen Kirwin for 1) reminding me and 2) posting to the Kirwan/in GenConnect Boards what I think is a terrific idea! St. Paddy's Day 2001 just happens to be the 200th birthday of our Patrick b. 1801 in Dublin (at least that's what he put on his papers ;]). Pat has suggested we use the date as an excuse to all meet in Kirwin, Kansas for a clan/family reunion/celebration. He has added that the Kirwan, KS Historical Society would probably be quite interested in helping us put this together. You could hardly be more equidistant in the center of the country than Kirwin, KS!!! You can email Pat at <patkirwin@hotmail.com> if you are interested and/or willing to help pull this off for us all.... I think it is a terrific idea and will begin hiding pennies from the leprechauns in anticipation ;] Just for our root family, the descendants of Patrick and Martha Jane Mills Kirwin, it would be the first time we had all been in the same place, same time in certainly 100 years.... Pat and I have never met in person..... I don't know about the rest of you, but this all has that feel of being bigger than us all to me... Thanks for your support! BTW, if you have Kirwin photos, I can add those to the website as well.... our branch is known for really sticky-outy ears.... how about yours??? Jana
