My mother's name was Kilpatrick. But when I trace the line back I find the name spelled various ways, sometimes for the same person: Kilpatrick, Kilpatric, Gilpatric, Killpatrick, Kirkpatrick, etc. I even find that half of the children in one family used the name Kilpatrick and half used the name Kirkpatrick. No wonder, though, since their father is listed on some documents as Kilpatrick and on others as Kirkpatrick. One needs to consider all reasonable variations. After all many people were poor spellers or didn't even know how to spell.
