Most of you have been aware of the work being done by the people at rootsweb to provide a way to have list messages archived and available to others. This decision is up to the 'listowner', but I feel you are all owners, and eventually we will need to decide whether to place our archived messages at the disposal of others. There has been some concern that individual email addresses would be available to all the sickos or spammers out there and would result in all of us being bombarded with unwanted messages. The sickos can subscribe and hit us every day in some way if they so desire, at least until blocked from the list. Spammers seem to use easily available mass addresses and probably would not go to the trouble of going into the archives and pulling addresses. Our list of subscribers are never available to anyone except the listowner. We have just been advised that a demo has been set up on eight lists that have been submitted for archiving. These have been indexed and a search engine is in place. Please drop by this site, see what you think and if you still don't want this list placed there, let me know. Otherwise I feel that we will only be hurting our own research efforts by staying out of this particular arena. The majority of you who responded to my original message indicated that we should go for it. Only a couple have had negative feelings and only one was pretty strongly against. I want to make us all happy but that may not be possible. If we do start having problems there are steps we can take to put them to an end.
