SAR Ceremony to honor our Patriot Ancestors Our Kirkpatrick family has a long and glorious history of standing up for principles they strongly believed in. When necessary they went to war to support those beliefs. That was also true for related families, such as the Gillham family. That was particularly true during the American Revolution against the British. On October 3, 2015 the Col. William Bratton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will be conducting grave marking ceremonies to honor two of the Kirkpatrick patriots and a Gillham. This will begin at approximately 11 AM at the historic Bullock Creek Cemetery south of the town of Sharon in York County, South Carolina. Honored will be two sons of James the Immigrant and wife Mary Newton and younger brothers of James, the Patriot, who died in 1781 when he was murdered in front of his wife and children by neighboring tories. John Kirkpatrick, 1744-13 August 1785. He served as a Captain under Colonel William Bratton. Robert Kirkpatrick, 1748/49-13 April 1803. He served as a Soldier under Colonel William Bratton. and: Thomas Gillham, 1710-after 1785. He supported the Patriot cause as a juror. He was the father-in-law of James, the Patriot, and was the executor of his estate. This is an important event to honor the service of these family members, and the sacrifices of their families, who contributed to the cause of Freedom & Liberty and any and all are welcome to attend. This is the military grant that Alexander Kirkpatrick received from Mark Rogers for land in Sumner County, TN (later Wilson County, TN) Orange County, NC deeds original deeds for Alexander (and Jane) from 1793 NORTH CAROLINA - Vol. 1, Page 161 - North Carolina Land Grant Sumner County - To all to whom these presents shall come: Greetings: Know ye that for and in consideration of the original bravery and persevering zeal, Mark Rogers, a private in the sole line of duty has given, granted and by these presents do give and grant unto Alexander Kirkpatrick, assign of heirs of said heirs of Mark Rogers, a tract of land containing six hundred and forty acres, lying and being in the county of Sumner on the North side of the Cumberland River. Beginning at a beach on the bank of the river at the lower edge end of the front bluff below the Virginia line running up the river agreeable to it's several meanders to all emersions of the bank of the river, then West four hundred and six poles to a stake, then south two hundred and seventy-two poles to a stake, then East four hundred ninety-two poles to the beginning as by the plot hereunto un-annexed doth appear together with all woods, waters, minerals, mines and appurtenances to the said land belonging or appertaining to the whole, to the said Alexander Kirkpatrick, his heirs and assigns forever, yielding and paying to us such sums of money yearly or otherwise as our general assembly from time to time may direct. Provided always that the said Alexander Kirkpatrick shall cause this grant to be registered in the Registrar's office of our said County of Sumner within twelve month's of the date hereof otherwise the same shall be void and of no effect. North Carolina notes on Alexander Kirkpatrick born 1741 of Orange County, North Carolina (Note: 0riginal Orange County Deed Books covering 1757-1768 were buried when the British troops occupied Hillsboro during the Revolution, and totally ruined when finally unearthed. Ron Klein I am interested in James Kirkpatrick (the immigrant) b about 1710 in Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland who died 9 May 1786 in Lockhart,Chester, SC  and his son James Kirkpatrick believed born 1743 in PA, who died on 1 January 1781 when he was murdered in his home by neighboring Tories following a battle by his patriot unit that was a huge defeat to the Tories. James, the Patriot, is my 5th gr-grandfather. The line descends directly from Sir Roger Kirkpatrick who finalized the deaths of double agent Comyn and his Uncle in 1306 at the Church which is the origin of the I Mak Sikkar expression and the bloody dagger as part of the family crest. Ron Klein I am interested in James Kirkpatrick (the immigrant) b about 1710 in Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland who died 9 May 1786 in Lockhart,Chester, SC  and his son James Kirkpatrick believed born 1743 in PA, who died on 1 January 1781 when he was murdered in his home by neighboring Tories following a battle by his patriot unit that was a huge defeat to the Tories. James, the Patriot, is my 5th gr-grandfather. The line descends directly from Sir Roger Kirkpatrick who finalized the deaths of double agent Comyn and his Uncle in 1306 at the Church which is the origin of the I Mak Sikkar expression and the bloody dagger as part of the family crest. Greetings to all! I saw the notice that this list was "orphaned" and took on the challenges of group administrator.  I see the list has been dormant for quite a while, and I'd like to see the group "wake up" and come back to life.
