Hi Theresa Baxter nee King: Sometimes it is most difficult to sort out repetitive given names while doing genealogical research on one's ancestors. We also have to deal with the fact that many ancestors could not read or write and that they also often spoke with accents that were difficult to understand by persons recording census and other data; these problems frequently resulted in the same persons name being recorded with different spellings in various documents. In my King line, the given name of Ephraim King of Lincoln Co. TN was used several times during most every King generation in America. So after twenty years of research, I haven't yet figured out just which Ephraim King about five generations back is my ancestor! In my mother's Cloud line, I had great difficulty sorting out the local records on two John Cloud's that were apparently born about the same time in the same area of the state. Finally, after one of them got married, I found out that they were part of the same family. But one was the son and the other was an informally adopted nephew. It resulted when my great-grandfather John E. Cloud died in a Federal Prison in Nashville, just before the end of the civil war. At that time, my John was informally adopted by his uncle who also had a son named John. The uncle was concurrently a military prisoner with my great-grandfather John E. Cloud that died in prison.
