    1. James C. King 1839 to ???
    2. Janet Potts
    3. I am trying to find the origins and final fate of James C. King. He was born ca 1839 (exact date unknown) in New Jersey (exact location unknown). Parents are unknown, but he had an uncle, Augustus G. King, and a sister Cornelia who was subject to fits (possibly the Cornelia King in the Morris Co (NJ) Poorhouse in 1850 to 1880 censuses). There was also a brother, also subject to fits, who died as a result of them. According to newspaper accounts, he went to California around age 18, but got into trouble (embezzling business partners) and had to leave. He traveled on a ship with Captain William Stott to Honolulu, and married Stott's daughter Anna there ca April 1863. In Nov. 1863 James quarreled with his father-in-law and shot him, but was acquitted. (William Stott recovered, but died of something else three years later, and I believe was buried back in his native Fairhaven, Massachusetts.) James and Anna had three children, Coursen H. born ca 1864 in Honolulu, Louise H. born ca 1865 in San Francisco, and Mary (nicknamed Polly, later went by Pauline) born ca 1867 in San Francisco. In the late 1860s James and family came back east to New York City, where the marriage deteriorated. In 1872 there were suits and counter-suits for divorce and custody of the children, Anna charging that James was abusive, and James accusing Anna of adultery. It culminated in Nov 1872 with James shooting dead the man he thought Anna had been unfaithful with. James was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, and spent a number of years at Auburn State Prison. He was pardoned by the governor and released in 1891. The last I've been able to find of him is that in 1897 he was living in Calgary, Alberta, from where he wrote to the NYC D.A. asking if he could have his gun back, as he needed it for self-protection. I am hoping to find who James' parents were, and how he fits into the various King families in New Jersey. And I'd also love to find out what eventually happened to him, how and where he died. Any suggestions or information would be appreciated. Thanks! jp PS Most of this information comes from articles on the murder and trial in the New York Times.
