I am new to the list and to King research. I am hoping some of you long-time King researchers can help educate me on this family. The lines I am working on appear to go from Surry/Sussex Co., VA to Martin Co., NC to GA to Middle TN. First of all, can anyone tell me who this Michael King is who is enumerated on the 1790 Martin Co., NC census? Michael King: 4 males > 16 years old (no males < 16) 1 female 15 slaves I suspect that he descends from the Surry/Sussex Co., VA Kings; further, it appears likely that his descendants left Martin Co., NC around the early 1790s for Greene/Hancock/Jasper Counties, GA. By the early 1800s, these NC/GA Kings were some of the earliest residents of Warren Co., TN (Middle TN). I have been researching a good many of the early Martin Co., TN families who move into GA (and some on into TN). Families such as the Knights, Hills, Edmondsons, Savages, and others moved as a group to the above-mentioned locales. I keep finding Kings associated with these families. In particular, I am trying to connect the following Kings (who may descend from Michael King of Martin Co., NC): 1. Woody King who was a land owner in Greene Co., GA by 1791. In an 1800 Greene Co. deed, he is named as an adjoining landowner to Richard Knight. This Richard Knight (Rev. soldier) is my ancestor. He had a grandson named Woody K(ing?) Knight, b. 1804 in Greene Co. Richard Knight was formerly a resident of Martin Co., NC, where in the 1790 census he is residing in the same district as Michael King (mentioned above). 2. Edwin D. King who was a captain of a company in the War of 1812. This company was formed in Greene Co., GA. Two of Richard Knight's sons--William and Joel Knight--enlisted in Capt. Edwin D. King's company. [Their older brother Calvary F. Knight is the one who had the son named Woody K. Knight.] Edwin D. King later lived in Fayette Co., GA, the same county of residence as Joel Knight, and wrote an affadavit in support of Joel Knight's pension application for a disability suffered during the war. 3. Stokes King, b. ca. 1800-1810 in NC, was listed on the 1830 Warren Co., TN census residing near two of Richard Knight's children: William Knight and Sarah (Knight) Orear. The surname Stokes is associated with the Knight family back in Sussex Co., VA as early as the mid-1760s. The Savage and Hill families were also living in this neighborhood by the early 1800s; the Savages descend from Robert Savage of Surry Co., VA, whose will was dated 1697/8. Robert Savage was in VA by 1682, as were the Knights. A descendant of this Robert Savage, Sterling King Savage, was a resident of Martin Co., NC by the early- to mid-1700s. The Savage descendants of this man intermarried with Knights, Hills, and Kings in NC, GA and Warren Co., TN. Other early Warren Co., TN Kings were: 1) James King, who signed a petition in 1806 asking that Warren Co. be established. 2) William King, b. in VA ca. 1793, and listed in the Warren Co., TN 1830 census. I do not know how these Warren Co., TN Kings are related. I would be very interested in knowing who the early King families are in Surry/Sussex Co., VA. (I have just joined the list in the past couple of days, so I do not have prior posts.) Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated!
