-- [ From: Margie Phelps * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Capt (boat Capt.) Richard King, married Henrietta Marie Morse Chamberlain, in whose honor the city of Kingsville, judical center of Kleberg Co., TX was named. Capt King was born in Orange Co, NY, 7/10/1825 and died 5/14/1885 in the city of San Antonio, TX and his remains were returned to Kingsville 9/14/1925 (40 yrs later) and is buried at the Kingsville Cemetery (my grandmother is buried about 20 yards behind him). Capt King was about 10 years old when he ran away from his paternal home. He became a stowaway on the steamer Desdemona, bound for Mobile Ala. After he was found the Capt gave him a fatherly talk and then he took interest in King adn sent him to school in the North (8 months). That was the extent of his schooling. There is much more on him in the book of "Kleberg County, Texas" published in 1976. I have copy numbered 1356 of 3000. His children were Richard King, Jr. (Pearl Ashbrook), Robert Lee King (not married and no issue), Alice Gertrudis (the Santa Gertrudis cattle were named after her) King (Robert Justus Kleberg), Ella Morse King (Louis Morris Welton), and Henrietta Maria King (Edwin Byron Atwood). The only son to have children was Richard King, Jr. and I do not see a Rufus King. The Klebergs run the Ranch now. My Mother went to school with one of the King girls. She spent many years in Kingsville growing up. We live about 30/40 minutes from there in Corpus Christi. For about 5 years I went on the King Ranch Annual Trail Ride in March. There are exotic animals on the ranch left over from the Capts days. But on the ride we only saw a few rattle snakes and afew cattle and many jack rabbits. Nothing to brag about. Not even a deer to tell my husband about... he did not ride, he stayed in camp. There is more on King that is not in print and probably will not be in print. If any one is interested in this Chapter I will copy and send (with a sase). there are pictures, and a descendancy chart There is a East line that I have tried to connect to, but so far I can not. My maiden name is East.
