So if I find a John King on the rolls he might be Black, American Indian, Irish, Dutch, German, Scotch? How then can I use or interpret the entry? I think that I saw an entry on one roll that said something like, "White person living with Indians". Further clouds the issue. How to use/interpret this entry? Could someone write about the smart/most practical/efficient way to use these rolls? It seems that these data could be useful to lots of people but we don't all have the time nor talent to read though Web pages of legislative history of why and how these file came to be. What we need is some insight about how they are laid out/constructed, problems, etc. and how can we quickly determine if we have a family connection. Hope that someone can write a few words along those lines and share with us. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 12:44 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KING] Freedmen Project-- Thank You !!! Hi, The Freedmen Project is an attempt to connect the families of former slaves to there American Indian roots. There are six different types of Freedmen, and my work is with the Cherokee Freedmen. No, African Americans were not the only slaves in America. There were American Indians, Caucasians of Irish, Dutch, German, Scotch, and others slaves as well. Just like not all slave owners were Caucasin. Many were American Indian and some were African American.
