    3. Janet In a letter dated 4/16/98 you wrote- "I have found in 3 separate places that don't always agree and I need to locate someone else who is searching John Hobson King that married Elizabeth Parker in North Carolina etc." I believe I have most of the information on John Hobson King. He was the son of Michael King and wife Mary Hobson. Michael was for a long time a resident of Bertie County. In about 1792 he moved to adjoining Martin County and died there in 1805. Michael left a will naming John Hobson King as a son. After the death of Michael, John Hobson King and his brother William C. King sold the land left by Michael King in Martin County. John Hobson King remained a resident of Bertie County where, for a number of years, he was County Surveyor. On Feb 28, 1787 he married Elizabeth Parker in adjoining Gates County. He appeared prominently and often in the records of Bertie County. In 1823 he sold his property in Bertie County and joined an exodus of a large number of Kings to Tennessee. Records show that he resided in Robertson County, Tennessee. He apparently did not remain there long as he died in Dallas County, Alabama in 1828. Records of Dallas County show that his estate was administered by a son Benajah King. I do not know the names of other children. >From your letter I gather that your connection is to Stokes County, North Carolina. I am aware that there were Kings there at these early dates, however I have not researched these. I hope the information on John Hobson King will be of help. Henry L. King

I have a colateral ancestor, Hardy Wells who married an Elizabeth Parker in 1784 in Caswell County. He and Elizabeth also settled by 1800 in Surry County and many of their descendants intermarried with quite a few families there. There were a number of Kings in both Person and Caswell Counties which could be the origin of your branch. This is especially significant that there were also Parkers there, if that ends up being the maiden name of the Elizabeth who married your John King. John Fox Winston-Salem, NC

    1. John Hobson KING m. Elizabeth Parker 1787 ?
    2. Janet Bower
    3. I have found in 3 separate places that don't always agree and I need to locate someone else who is researching John Hobson King that married Elizabeth Parker in North Carolina. They were written about in the book "Stones of Surry" by Chas. H. Stone and the "Stokes County, North Carolina Heritage Book" Vol II in an article by Lucille King Wall and were also included in the Family History Index No. 198886 in the LDS FHC. One of these sources gives a marriage date for them as 28 Feb 1787 in Gates County, NC. Another source claims Martin Co., NC. Another states Williamston, N.C. or Wilmington, NC. Then according to several of these sources to have had 2 children, Thomas Benjamin King born 1802/3 and Fannie Wiggins King birth date unknown. In that era it seems unlikely that they would have gone 15 years before having their first child. In the "Stones of Surry" it says John Hobson King bound out his son, Thomas Benjamin to an uncle. Thomas was indignant at being bound out and ran away to Stokes County, NC where he prospered. He married Elizabeth King in 1826 and had 3 children; Jane Elizabeth born on 14 April 1828, William Augustin born on 5Apr 1832, and John Quincy Adams King born on 19 Dec 1834, all born in Stokes County, NC. For the past 3 years I have been looking for a John King that Married Elizabeth ? and had a son James King born in 1796. More and more it looks like this John King is a good candidate. He could have had children previous to Thomas Benjamin. My James King married his wife, Barzillah Gordon, in Stokes County in 1819. Thomas Benjamin would have been 16 then and he ran away from where ever the uncle lived and went to Stokes County. In a book by Isaac Martin Gordon on his Gordon family history that I found on microfiche in the LDS FHC No.6018075 on page 5, quote---- "Barzillai, who married James King, and removed to, and died in Indiana, this James King was the son of John King, who first settled the J. Gideon Gordon Place in Stokes County, (NC), raising a family, and residing there about 40 years prior to the time it came into the possession of Martin Gordon. Said place was entered or taken up from the state by this John King, who sold it to John Gordon, father of Martin Gordon, for about $350, and removed to, and lived and died on the Bill Snyder Place, a part of what was formerly the J. Quincy A. King place, near Pinnacle, Stokes Co., NC." I don't know if these descriptive names for the property was what it was called in the 1800's or if this was the description the people in 1910 used when Isaac Gordon wrote the history. I am assuming it was in 1910 and the person owning the land could have been John Hobson King and it was willed to or somehow acquired by his grandson, J(ohn) Quincy A(dams) King. I went to the Archives in Raleigh, NC in 1997 and spent all day for 6 days there searching for my John King. I found land records for John King but I wasn't able to identify him as related to my James King. I had not begun to think that John Hobson King was a candidate yet. That came about 3 months ago when I started seriously researching the only John King I found who had married an Elizabeth in the late 1700's and in North Carolina. I would sure appreciate any help or comments, especially from other John Hobson King researchers. Did he die in 1835? Janet King Bower JKB@nwlink.com Puyallup, WA 98374

    3. Just found out that I am going to be in VA (lower Shenandoah) and North Carolina (Greensboro) in early May. My husband is going on business & I'm tagging along. I will have a couple of free days in NC and wonder what resources (libraries, etc) are available. Then in June I am going to SC on business and am taking a couple of days to explore! I will be in Charleston but am considering driving to the Spartanburg area where one family came from. They are said to have come from the "Pendleton District" near Spartanburg. I haven't been able to find out if they meant Pendleton, SC? I am researching KING, THOMPSON, BRADFORD, &TRUSS. Looks like all of them were in Virginia, then NC, and some in SC. Any suggestions? 3. I wonder if anyone on this list has any connections to our Kings who came from N.Ireland sometime in the 1830s. We are looking for Robert King who married Catherine Crawford in 1841 in the Church of England in Leeds Quebec. We don't know where they came from in Ireland, but would like to. Also if anyone else on this list had any Quebec connections, I have a book that holds the records of births, marriages and burials for Megantic County, and will look up records if anyone would like to find a long lost KING. Cheers from Patti and Keith McVetty Niagara Region Canada
