    3. La Vera; Many thanks to a previously unknown cousin, Ken Slaten, I now have a very good history of My King Alabama ancestors. My 3rd Great Grandfather was Joseph Griffin who was born in SC about 1765-1767. He married 1. Mary Ann and had 5 children, Lucinda who married a Martindale, Thacker W., John W. who married Sarah ?, Lorenzo D. who resided in Dallas Co. near Selma and Mary Hester A. who married John Higginbotham 1/31/1850 in Madison Co. Mary Ann died abt. 1818. On March 20, 1820 he married Charity Davis who was 30 years his junior, and from NC. They had 4 children, Joseph Casin, b. 12/9/ 1820 and m. Katherine True, Samuel J. b 1830, William b 1834 and Sarah Jane "Jenny" my gg grandmother b 2/1836 and married Ruben Webster. I have been told that one of Jenny's brothers was killed in the "War of Northern Aggression." I do not know if it was a brother or a half brother. 2. Dear Earnie and the List, Now you are getting real close to MY territory! I have been searching for several years for the father of my great, great grandfather, John Rooney KING. He was born in Jackson Co., AL (right next door to Madison Co.). His DOB was 22-NOV-1839 and died 08-SEP-1870 and is buried in the Langston Cemetery in Jackson Co., AL. I knew from census records that his mother's name was Elizabeth and with the help of my cousin, Neta Wood, we have just confirmed her maiden name was DABNEY. I have just found a marriage record for an Elijah KING to an Elizabeth Dabny/Dalony? who were married 14-JAN-1831 in Madison Co., AL. This info was found at the Clayton Library in Houston, TX on 27-JUL-1998 in a book called Early Alabama Marriages published by Family Adventures, P. O. Box 290354, San Antonio, TX 78280. >From this book I copied all the male KINGs, but I am sorry to say not the females. John R. KING named his first son Lester Elijah KING so I feel we are on the right track! If anyone can confirm descendants of this Elijah and Elizabeth KING, I would greatly appreciate it. If you might be a descendant of any of the above, that would be even better. I have more info to share on John Rooney KING and his mother and siblings. BTW, Elizabeth had a brother named James Dabney. He married a Sara (Sarah?), maiden name unknown. Earnie, I will look for your Clarissa as I look for Elijah. Some of his neighbors were also from WAKE Co. NC. My ancestor, Ephraim KING, was born about 1785 in NC. He married a lady named Jane HARKINS around 1804, most likely in SC according to oral family history. Their first two children were born in NC. The family moved to Lincoln Co. TN around 1815; since Ephraim made a purchase at an estate sale of a relative named David McCANTS on 1 May that year in Lincoln Co. I have found data indicating that two persons with the name Ephraim KING served in the 1812 War from NC, one from Onslow Co. and another from Herford (sp?) County. There was also an Ephraim KING that served for one month with Col. James Ford's Regiment, Lt. James Hollis' Detachment, south of the OHIO in 1794. Tom King, Sr. Tel: 619-451-3833 San Diego, CA. >> Hi Tom, The name of Baxter is much associated with a King family who settled in the Hillsborough area of North Carolina, very near the town of Chapel Hill. I have some data on that family, if you think it is likely that the Baxter that was near your Kings in Tenn, was part of the group. One of my distant cousins, Julia Royster married a Harkins in Alabama. The Roysters were originally from Person County, having settled there from Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The names of Barham and McAdams are also familiar names in the Person/Caswell Counties in NC. Person and Caswell were originally part of Orange County in the 1750/60's. There was also another branch of Kings in the Person County area; I have not researched that particular line; I have King family who were in northern Alamance County, which is just below Caswell and south west of Person. My problem is the name of Ephraim; I cannot find any data in the King lineages that I have collected. Have you found the name of Ephraim King on any of the tax lists for NC during the time he would have been there? He would be listed on that if he were 21 whether or not he had property or not. I believe that you have a pretty safe bet that your Kings did originate in this general area of NC. Best regards, John Fox Winston-Salem, NC

I use America Online (AOL) as my front-end server and as part of their set-up program, one can tell the software not to download attachments; or not to open or save them automatically when one signs off. However, remember, some e-mail software packages automatically convert extra long messages to attachments. As you may have read in my previous messages to the board and the board owner, I do not open downloads attached to messages due to possible bugs-Trojans- virus, etc. However, there is one exception, when I know the person sending the message and hope that their software is clean. Your test message did not have an attachment, so maybe you have figured out how to set your software to send data without converting it to an attachment. John and Jean King came to what is now Adams County, Pennsylvania in circa 1730. They emigrated from Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland, with their daughter, Martha, b. 1724; and four sons: Samuel, b. abt. 1708; Victor, b. 1710; William, b. 1712, and James, b. 1714. John King died on 27 Jan 1747 and Jean King died on 20 Aug 1746 in Tyrone Township, York County (now Adams County) Pennsylvania. They are both buried in Great Conewago Presbyterian Cemetery, Hunterstown, Pennsylvania. Martha King died, unmarried, on 23 Dec 1760 and is buried in the same cemetery. Samuel King is known to have married, and to have had at least two children; John, b. after 1730; and Joan, b. after 1730. Nothing further is known concerning Samuel, and it is believed that he moved on to Virginia and/or the Carolinas soon after his marriage. It is known that the King family of Adams County, Pennsylvania had relatives in North Carolina and Virginia. William King, son of John and Jean, died unmarried on 13 Oct 1794 and is buried in the Hunterstown Presbyterian Cemetery with his parents and his sister. James King married in 1750 to an unknown spouse. He died on 9 Nov 1799 in Hunterstown, and is also believed to have been buried there.
