KING, son of Isaac and Catharine (Borden) King, natives of Kentucky was born June 4, 1830, in Harbison (sic) County, Ind. The parents were married in Indiana and lived successively in this State and Kentucky, and finally settled near Birdseye, Ind., whre the father died in 1881. The mother still lives with a daughter on the old homestead, and is seventy- seven years of age. George, the subject of this sketch, received a common school education in the country schools of his county, and in early life followed farming for his father with whom he remained until 1857, when he married Mary Anne Kendall, March 12, 1857. The result of this union was fourteen children, eight now living: Isabel (Potter), Jane (Grant), Elijah M., Emily (Montgomery), Amanda E., Phoebe M., Theodore, and Alvin R. After marriage Mr. King began farming on some vacant land near Mentor, Ind. He soon after bought forty acres of land, on which part of Birdseye now stands. In 1854 he bought eighty acres more. In 1885 he traded this farm for one of ninety-four acres near Schnellville where he now lives. He is a Republican, and did a great deal for the North during war times, although he did not enter the army owing to his large helpless family, who needed his support at home. He and family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. 2. Subj: Elijah King Date: 98-08-15 09:19:52 EDT From: GibsonHamm To: KING-L@rootsweb.com Hi: I am new to this list and this is my first post. I am researching the ancestors of William Elijah King, born January 25, 1867, died July 22, 1930 in Pope County, AR. His father was Elijah King, 1839-1899, supposedly born in Murray County, GA and married to Martha Harkey, b. 1839 in TN. Would like any assistance from other researchers of this line to locate more information on Elijah's family--parents and siblings. Thanks- Nancy Hamm GibsonHamm@aol.com

    1. [KING-L] KING - PA/OH
    2. While trying to sort out my Athens Co, Oh Kings, I had to puzzle through a PA bunch who have similar names. There is a Joshua King, Jr. - PA who married a Sarah in Athens Co. in 1838. He moved to Morgan Co. which is near Vinton & Athens where my Joshua and Susan lived. The Pa Joshua, Jr. was born according to my notes in 1838, Sarah in 1819. I have four deeds from or about Joshua King, Sr. There is a Joshua Sr., late of Little Brittain twp., Lanc Co. Pa., who left property in Athens Co., Ohio. His exec. were Joseph Ballance Jr. and Amos King. It is my opinion that he was married to Agnes King since she signed the deed of sale to a (W?) White in 1839. It is possible the Elizabeth below was the wife, but she is mentioned with sisters Mary, Miriam and Deborah. Joshua states "daughters". Another deed - Benjamin Joy of Boston to James King, Jr., of Martick twp Lanc. Co., Pa, 1824, land in the Ohio Company Purchase, state of Ohio - signed & delivered by Benjamin (Peterson?) of Marietta, Ohio. This was witnessed by Joshua and Eliz. King, Lanc Co. Robert King Jr. was the Justice of the Peace - notary. it is this early date that is confusing since Eliz signed with Joshua Sr. as witness here. She could be an older daughter, or perhaps an Eliz the wife of James. In 1839, Joshua's estate deeded land to Mary King, Deborah King, Eliz. King, Miriam King (Josheph Thomas guardian of Miriam) of East Nottingham (Pa) - the purchase of Joshua recorded at Athens in the State of Ohio in 1825.(From a Clark family in Boston). Joseph Ballance Jr., & Amos King, exec. "Signed and sealed in the presence of us, John Webster, Agness King. 1839 Ballance & Amos K. exec. deeded land in Athens co. to Thos. King. of Athens Co.(son of said Josua King) (for the consideration of two hundred and fifty dollars). Signed by John Webster, J. Ballance and Amos King. There are several James Kings in the Athens census who claim Pa births. My James married to first Jane, then Theresa, lived in Canaan twp and claimed Va. Since Robert King disappears from the Athens census after 1830, I am not sure that he is not the Pa Robert King, Jr. I do not believe so since he lived next door to Laurence King who I believe is his father. He is of the right age. For what it's worth - Pat Snyder

He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, oward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few -- the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot" was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. -- Author unknown. --part0_903312715_boundary--

I have been trying to pin down the county in NC my KING line lived in just prior to moving to Lincoln Co. TN around 1815. I have noted that some of their neighbors were from Orange Co. NC. I have also found there were two Ephraim KING's in NC during the War of 1812; one in Onslow Co. NC (near Wilmington) and the other in Hereford Co. NC; but I can't document either as a connection to my KING line; however, I think they were most likely cousins. One of my KING aunts said that the KING's migrated from VA to NC near Wilmington, NC and later they moved westward to Lincolnton Co., NC. Before moving on to TN in 1815. I have checked in both locations in NC and found nothing to document their passage thru those two areas. The Ephraim King in Onslow Co. was a witness to a land sale shortly after the end of the 1812 War. Another KING researcher claims that later he made a land claim in south AL, based on his 1812 War service (I think in Coffee Co.). Oral family history states that my gr-gr grandfather Ephraim KING married his wife in SC and that they were attracted to Lincoln Co. TN by one of his wife's sisters who married a man named ARMSTRONG. However, again I have been unable to document their marriage in SC and a possible connection to the ARMSTRONG clan of Lincoln Co. TN. Only a marriage between the KING's and ARMSTRONG's a couple of generations later following their migration to TN. I note that you have a ROBINSON in your family line. The mother of my grandmother Alina CHAPMAN KING was named Ann E. Robinson, b. abt. 1819. Possibly related to your line? The HARDEN in my line was intermarried with my gr-gr-gr grandfather William CLOUD line in VA, quite possibly prior to the Rev. War. William and wife Alice settled in Fairfield Co. SC, again quite possibly prior to the Rev. War. I have a lot of data on my CLOUD line, but not too much on my HARDEN line, which I think originated in France. Thanks again for your response. 1. Re: [KING-L] NC-KING's; unusual given names.- Reply
    2. Hi Ken Tanner: Thanks for your response to the subject listing. I think our KING lines are related, just where I am not certain. But they were most likely cousins for the reasons stated below. My gr-gr grandfather Ephraim KING was born about 1785, most likely in NC; but possibly in VA based on oral family history. His birth date was calculated from his published age at death. He died in 1845 in Lincoln Co. TN. Your Ephraim King that married a lady named Sarah in NC and had a son named Henry in 1816 in NC, could well have been a cousin of my Ephraim KING. There were two Ephraim KING's listed in genealogical records as serving in the War of 1812 from NC. One was from Onslow Co., NC and the other from Hereford Co., NC. There could well have been others that I don't yet know of. My gr-gr grandfather Ephraim KING married a lady named Jane HARKINS, her birth date is unknown; but it was most likely a couple or years after her husband's birth. Their exact marriage date and location unknown, but estimated as being in 1805 in NC; or possibly SC, according to oral family history. Their two older children were born in NC, according to census data given by their descendants. Jane died during the civil war in 1863 in Lincoln Co. TN. Both were buried in a family cemetery situated on a farm they owned east of Petersburg, TN. My gr-gr grandfather Ephraim KING named one of his sons Shadrack A. KING (b. 1819). He married a lady named Mary D. McADAMS and they had a son named Ephraim C. KING (b. 1835). He married a lady named Elizabeth BLACKWELL (b. abt 1845) in 1867. No children listed in my database. My gr-gr grandfather Ephraim KING, named another son Andrew Jackson KING (b. 1813) and he and his wife had a son named Thomas Shadrack KING. He in turn had a son named Henry Sanford KING (born in TN) and another son named Ephraim Jackson KING, born in AL (my father). So you see, our KING lines both used the given name Ephraim and Henry. Both lines had men named Ephraim who married ladies named Sarah. And lastly, one from each line named Ephraim married ladies named Blackwell! So somewhere, we must be related! Some time ago I corresponded with another researcher working on the King's from Coffee Co. AL. I don't recall his name just now, but he was from the Atlanta, GA area. His name may have been Bobbie KING (Note the CC: address above). I think he was descended from the Ephraim King line from Onslow Co. NC. Have you been corresponding with him? If you are interested, we could exchange GEDCOM files on our KING lines. Tom King, Sr. San Diego, CA Tel: 619-451-3833

    1. [KING-L] William King family
    2. Hello everyone, This is my first time to do this, so I hope this goes out correctly! I am researching the William King line. William was born approx. 1796 in Vermont and at some point in his life moved up to Ontario, Canada. He married Sibyl Clark, b. May 2, 1796, d. June 13, 1869, probably in Prince Edward Co., Ontario. Most likely, all their children were born in Prince Edward Co., Ontario: 1) Mary 2) Irena (b. Nov. 1816, married David Dulmage) 3) Michael (b. 1821, married Mary Grimon) 4) Jared (b. Apr. 12, 1822, married Rachel Janes) 5) Chancy (b. Mar. 13, 1823, married Eliza Jane Stover) 6) Almira (b. Apr. 8, 1825, married 1. George Howell, 2. William Merkle) 7) DeWitt Clinton (b. Dec. 20, 1829, married Mary Ellen Dulmage) 8) George (b. Mar. 1, 1832, married Mary Wright) 9) Catherine (b. 1834, married David Reynolds) 10) Sarah (b. July 13, 1835, married Joseph Trott) Most of the male children had moved to Huron Co. by the late 1850's. Chancy eventually moving to and settling in the Algoma District later. Our line, through DeWitt "Clinton", immigrated to Michigan around 1882, where he and wife Mary Ellen eventually died in Detroit.
