My King family of Orange County, now Alamance County, NC had the name of Amza or Amazie in the third or so generation of the family in the county. My research revealed that this was a nickname that stemmed from the name Armour. (Don't ask me how they got that!!!) I am wondering if the name Amazon may have had the same origin, especially in light of the fact that the King family is also involved. Best regards, John Fox Winston-Salem, NC

    1. [KING-L] Richard King family in TX
    2. I've noticed a few people writing about Richard King in TX, born in Orange Co., NY. It reminded me that last year, when we were visiting my parents-in- law in Georgetown, TX, I noticed a VERY old cemetery near a park there. So being the faithful genealogist I am :) I took a look in this VERY old and fairly small cemetery. I saw a William King which caught my eye, whose headstone stated he was from Orange Co., NY!! I don't have the dates anymore, but can ask my mother-in-law to make a trip down there to get this info if anyone is interested. I'm pretty sure he lived in the early 1800's. Meanwhile, I'd still love to hear from anyone researching OUR William King's family. William being born in Vermont abt. 1796 and at some point moving into Ontario, Canada, where he married Sibyl Clark and had all 10 of their children: Mary, Irena, Michael, Jared, Chancy, Almira, DeWitt Clinton, George, Sarah and Catherine. 1. Re: [KING-L] Richard King/King Ranch
    2. MRS MARGIE A PHELPS
    3. -- [ From: Margie Phelps * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Capt (boat Capt.) Richard King, married Henrietta Marie Morse Chamberlain, in whose honor the city of Kingsville, judical center of Kleberg Co., TX was named. Capt King was born in Orange Co, NY, 7/10/1825 and died 5/14/1885 in the city of San Antonio, TX and his remains were returned to Kingsville 9/14/1925 (40 yrs later) and is buried at the Kingsville Cemetery (my grandmother is buried about 20 yards behind him). Capt King was about 10 years old when he ran away from his paternal home. He became a stowaway on the steamer Desdemona, bound for Mobile Ala. After he was found the Capt gave him a fatherly talk and then he took interest in King adn sent him to school in the North (8 months). That was the extent of his schooling. There is much more on him in the book of "Kleberg County, Texas" published in 1976. I have copy numbered 1356 of 3000. His children were Richard King, Jr. (Pearl Ashbrook), Robert Lee King (not married and no issue), Alice Gertrudis (the Santa Gertrudis cattle were named after her) King (Robert Justus Kleberg), Ella Morse King (Louis Morris Welton), and Henrietta Maria King (Edwin Byron Atwood). The only son to have children was Richard King, Jr. and I do not see a Rufus King. The Klebergs run the Ranch now. My Mother went to school with one of the King girls. She spent many years in Kingsville growing up. We live about 30/40 minutes from there in Corpus Christi. For about 5 years I went on the King Ranch Annual Trail Ride in March. There are exotic animals on the ranch left over from the Capts days. But on the ride we only saw a few rattle snakes and afew cattle and many jack rabbits. Nothing to brag about. Not even a deer to tell my husband about... he did not ride, he stayed in camp. There is more on King that is not in print and probably will not be in print. If any one is interested in this Chapter I will copy and send (with a sase). there are pictures, and a descendancy chart There is a East line that I have tried to connect to, but so far I can not. 1. [KING-L] Kings of VA/NC/GA/TN
    2. Donna Sarchet
    3. I am new to the list and to King research. I am hoping some of you long-time King researchers can help educate me on this family. The lines I am working on appear to go from Surry/Sussex Co., VA to Martin Co., NC to GA to Middle TN. First of all, can anyone tell me who this Michael King is who is enumerated on the 1790 Martin Co., NC census? Michael King: 4 males > 16 years old (no males < 16) 1 female 15 slaves I suspect that he descends from the Surry/Sussex Co., VA Kings; further, it appears likely that his descendants left Martin Co., NC around the early 1790s for Greene/Hancock/Jasper Counties, GA. By the early 1800s, these NC/GA Kings were some of the earliest residents of Warren Co., TN (Middle TN). I have been researching a good many of the early Martin Co., TN families who move into GA (and some on into TN). Families such as the Knights, Hills, Edmondsons, Savages, and others moved as a group to the above-mentioned locales. I keep finding Kings associated with these families. In particular, I am trying to connect the following Kings (who may descend from Michael King of Martin Co., NC): 1. Woody King who was a land owner in Greene Co., GA by 1791. In an 1800 Greene Co. deed, he is named as an adjoining landowner to Richard Knight. This Richard Knight (Rev. soldier) is my ancestor. He had a grandson named Woody K(ing?) Knight, b. 1804 in Greene Co. Richard Knight was formerly a resident of Martin Co., NC, where in the 1790 census he is residing in the same district as Michael King (mentioned above). 2. Edwin D. King who was a captain of a company in the War of 1812. This company was formed in Greene Co., GA. Two of Richard Knight's sons--William and Joel Knight--enlisted in Capt. Edwin D. King's company. [Their older brother Calvary F. Knight is the one who had the son named Woody K. Knight.] Edwin D. King later lived in Fayette Co., GA, the same county of residence as Joel Knight, and wrote an affadavit in support of Joel Knight's pension application for a disability suffered during the war. 3. Stokes King, b. ca. 1800-1810 in NC, was listed on the 1830 Warren Co., TN census residing near two of Richard Knight's children: William Knight and Sarah (Knight) Orear. The surname Stokes is associated with the Knight family back in Sussex Co., VA as early as the mid-1760s. The Savage and Hill families were also living in this neighborhood by the early 1800s; the Savages descend from Robert Savage of Surry Co., VA, whose will was dated 1697/8. Robert Savage was in VA by 1682, as were the Knights. A descendant of this Robert Savage, Sterling King Savage, was a resident of Martin Co., NC by the early- to mid-1700s. The Savage descendants of this man intermarried with Knights, Hills, and Kings in NC, GA and Warren Co., TN. Other early Warren Co., TN Kings were: 1) James King, who signed a petition in 1806 asking that Warren Co. be established. 2) William King, b. in VA ca. 1793, and listed in the Warren Co., TN 1830 census. I do not know how these Warren Co., TN Kings are related. I would be very interested in knowing who the early King families are in Surry/Sussex Co., VA. (I have just joined the list in the past couple of days, so I do not have prior posts.) Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated!
