Can anyone help me go find more information on this ancestor and his line? I'd like to find his father and mother and any previous ancestors, his brothers and sisters if any, location and anything else that would help me get an idea of who he was, what he did and where he came from. I'd also like to fill in some of the blanks on more recent generations. I am researching on a shoestring so any help you can provide would be most appreciated. My branch of these KINGs 'daughtered out' in my mom's generation. Would ultimately like to trace this line down to contemporary descendants to find out what happened to this line. Name: William KING Birth date: Abt. 1755 Place: unknown Married: Mary ('Polly') WOODSON dob unknown When/where married: unknown Children: Woodson ('Woody') KING, not known if there are others Migration states: unknown Other facts: I have some information on generations down to my line which appears below. Second generation: Woodson ('Woody') KING dob unknown m. Sarah CARTWRIGHT dob unknown Third generation: Edwin Davis ('Dock') KING dob unknown (first instance of the nickname "Dock" in this line) m. Ann Alston HUNTER b. 8 7 1792 Probable location: The King Family Plantation, Lower Peachtree, Monroe County, Alabama Fourth generation: William Douglas ('Dock' or 'Dock Wills') KING dob unknown m. Rebecca Singleton ('Becky') TAIT dob unknown Location: The King Family Plantation, Lower Peachtree, Monroe County, Alabama Fifth generation: William Dock ('Dock' or 'Dock Wills') KING, b. 3 26 1866 m. Frances Adams ('Fanny') HOMER, dob unknown Location: The King Family Plantation, Lower Peachtree, Monroe County, Alabama Sixth generation: Mary ('Polly') KING dob unknown may have married a CUNNINGHAM, if not then another sister did. Lucile ('Lucy') KING, b. 9 27 1890 m. James Leo DONAHUE (this is my line) brother whose first or middle name may have been 'Homer' and one or two more siblings Location: The King Family Plantation, Lower Peachtree, Monroe County, Alabama The King Family Plantation house was relocated from the original site (Lower Peachtree, AL) in the last 20 or 30 years. When the workers were preparing it for relocation, a Civil War era message was found written on the foundation. I do not know where it was relocated to. Many years back, I saw an article by a local historical society about the relocation of the house, which also spoke of the high regard "Dock Wills" had been held in by the local community. I have not been able to locate a copy of it. Also, I do not know whether "Dock Wills" was a physician or whether the nickname came from a waterway dock on the property used for shipping and receiving or some other source, and whether the name applied to the fourth generation William King or the fifth generation one, or both. I would like to find out why the nickname 'Dock' runs down this line and where this KING line came from before it settled at the plantation site. There are a number of family mysteries associated with this line that I would like to solve. First, there is supposed to be a link to Pocahontas by blood or marriage (surviving members of my mother's generation cannot agree on which), but that has yet to be documented. Second, there is supposed to be a link to Frank and Jesse JAMES. I have now found a link back thru Rebecca Singleton (TAIT) KING's line thru her mother's GOODE ancestors to a Sarah JAMES b. 1770, daughter of John JAMES b. 1715 and Sarah MOORE dob unknown. I will need to trace that line forward to see if a connection to Frank and Jesse indeed exists. I looked once before at the information that is online about the James Gang, but I could not see how my line instersected. With this new information I will go back and look agains. If anyone has information or suggestions that might make my job easier, I would appreciate their suggestions. Thirdly, my mother's mother made frequent reference to a resemblance between me and my sisters and a Virginia Lafayette BROWN, of whom she seemed quite fond. None of the surviving members of my mother's generation has any idea of who she might have been or why my grandmother would have spoken of her in that manner. I've recently discovered that Frances Adams ('Fanny') HOMER's mother's maiden name Eugenia Brown ADAMS and traces back to a John BROWN b. 1863 thru Marjory Kembelton (BROWN) ADAMS (dob unknown) and Samuel BROWN (dob unknown). It seems highly likely that Virginia Lafayette BROWN was a familiar relative of whom my grandmother had fond memories and for that reason, I would like to find out how she is related to my and what there is to know about her. If anyone happens to have information about this line that might speed me along in my search, I would appreciate their help. Please note that I am a complete amateur/hobbyist, my interest in genealogy research is purely personal, and I will not use any information shared with me to make any kind of profit. By the same token, if I have information that might help anyone, I am willing to share. Thanks very much for hearing me out at such length. Maura in Maryland (who still misses her sweet Alabama grandma these many years gone)
Sarah S. King, daughter of Walter KING and his wife, Nancy SEVIER, married Robert KIRKPATRICK and did NOT marry Isaac E. Fitch. The first wife of Isaac E. Fitch remains unknown. I wish to thank Mrs. Brenda King Finch, a King researcher, and Mr. Charles Ward, a Fitch descendant, for helping me to clear this up. Jack Fitch --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Just letting you know someone got back to me right away with the info I needed so no need for any look ups - this pertains to my previous 1870 request (Victor King) missing page. Thanks. Lynda K. I just need someone with access to 1870 images to look this up and tell me all the children listed with the family. My page gets cut off after "George." There may not be anymore listed, I just want to double check. KING, Victor A. East Hartford, Hartford County, CT June 1870 Page No. 84 (Actual) Sereies M593 Roll 102 Page 190 I show listed: Victor, Harriet, Eugene, Charles, Frank, James, George - then the page ends. Need to know if there are any more names on the next page? Thanks. Please don't bother looking up any other years. I have most all of them on this particular individual. Thanks again. Lynda K. Wade [email protected] Syracuse Executives Association Associate Member Michael J. Wade Biostatistican, Syracuse VA Medical Center [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]
Jack, Sorry, I don't have the answer you need, I just want to let you know that I am a King from Sullivan County, TN. As far as I've gotten back is to Charles Lewis King born 1891. He married Margaret Fulk. He was nicknamed Buster. Had children Charles W., Lawrence, James Cecil (Jack), and Ethel. Ethel married Wm Foster. All stayed around the Bristol and Kspt area. Would you have the parents of Buster in your data base? Sorry that I could not be of help to you! Jan
Sarah Sevier King was a daughter of Walter KING and Nancy SEVIER, of Sullivan and Roane Counties in Tennessee. She is said to have married Isaac E. Fitch (1805-1875). I would like to confirm this marriage. Jack Fitch --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos, & more faith.yahoo.com
A genealogy puzzle to present to you.......... Albert Mitchell Miller was my husband's paternal grandfather. I have been trying to find out who his parents, etc. are. Albert Mitchell Miller was born October 14, 1872 in Canton, Illinois. He told his oldest daughter that he thought that his mother died when he was born. He also said that his father died when he was three years old. He believed that his father was a Doctor from Scotland and his mother was an Irish Bondswoman. He said he was of Scots-Irish descent. He thought that his father's name was George and his mother's name was Alice. I have tried my best to find out information and have always come up empty-handed on this search. Birth records for 1872 in Fulton county are non-existant. The county seat, Lewistown, does not have birth records until 1875. I have read that there might have been a cholera epidemic in the Canton area during the time of Albert's mother's passing, but am not sure if this is true. I am guessing that his mother may have died as a result of childbirth complications, but this is also not verified. I have no idea why Albert was given to Wells and Mary J. ( King ) Hickman to be raised. I have never been able to find any information on either one of them either - except for their burials in the Bushnell Illinois Cemetery. Albert is buried next to them ( and his own wife is buried several rows away from him ). This has been a huge mystery for the family and puzzles the daylights out of me. I am desperately trying to find out who Albert's parents, grandparents, etc. were and where they came from. With a name like Miller - the possibilities are endless ! Thanks for any assistance on this matter. I have given you all that I have on this man. His own daughter said he never talked about his parents because he never knew them. He passed away September 13, 1955 and the mystery continues..... Carolyn
I would like more information from the 1900 census record that you found. Was there an enumeration district? Where did it state each were born? Was James and Elizabeth born in Ireland? I find lots of parents of Kings born in Ireland, but they may not be yours. What page were they on in the 1900 census? I would like to see that page for myself in order to do a lookup in the 1910 and 1920. I will have better luck in 1920 as it has an index. Anything you can tell me about this census record you already have would help. Tina Hall -----Original Message----- From: Lynda K. I found this ancestor on familysearch.org: Victor KING born 10/22/1884 died 10/1969 ss#048-10-1232, issued in CT. Death residence localities are listed as: 06074 Bissell, Hartford, CT South Windsor, Hartford CT, Wapping, Hartford, CT. I sent to Hartford Vital Records at 550 Main St. for the death certificate. Thought it would be an easy find for them. They sent my money back and said "not found." They suggested I try another town or the State Vital Records Office at 410 Capitol Ave, PO Box 340308, Hartford. Based on what I found on familysearch.org and what they said, where is the best place to try next? Also, does anyone visit the State Vital Records Office. I don't live there. Would anyone be able to do the look up for me? I need this man's mother's name desperately and to confirm the father's name and see if there is any other helpful information on the certificate. Tina, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You ! This is the most info I have been able to glean in years ! I'm astounded to see that it says George was born in England ?? I have never heard anything about that. I know that he was very ill a lot of the time, probably why census shows no occupation. I will look for info on a county in CO , once again thanks. Emma in NM
Emma, I found a CA death record for Eula. You probably have it already, but just in case: KING, Eula Corrine, F, b. Feb 20, 1872, d. Apr. 11, 1959, b. GA, d. LA, CA, no SSN listed, mother's maiden name: HARRIS, Father's surname: BOZEMAN BINGO! I found them in the 1920 census. I don't know if you already have that or not, but here is the record: 1920 Federal Census, CA, Orange co., Santa Ana Twp., Enumeration Dist. 81, Prec. 6 Castin St.? h/h #288/322 KING, George head owner MW 59 Marr. 1888 b. England, parents b. England, occ: none (b. 1860) - , Ulah C. wife FW 47 marr. b. GA, father b. GA, mother b. FL (b. 1872) - , Eunice L. dau. FW 16 single b. CO (b. 1903) - , Eulah G. dau. FW 14 single b. CO (b. 1905) - , Thomas B. son MW 13 single b. CO (b. 1906) - , ? Ruby L. dau. FW 11 single b. CO (b. 1908) - , Lillian M. dau. FW 9 single b. CO (b. 1910) - , Lucius E. son MW 8 single b. CO (b. 1911) (I have subtracted one year because 1920 census was taken "as of Jan. 1, 1920") I could do more with a county in Colorado. Do you not have a death record for any of the children who were born there? This Thomas is a close match to yours: Thomas King SSN: 568-10-4557 issued CA b. 20 Nov 1906 died Jan 1984 in Los Angeles, CA You could check the death notices on the papers to see if that helps you determine whether he's your Thomas or not. Thomas King SSN:529-18-2747 issued UT b. 20 Dec 1906 d. Mar 1974 San Francisco, CA Thomas B King SSN 564-05-0722 issued CA born 7 Oct 1906 d. 8 Oct 1988 no residence listed Lucius King SSN:566-52-5652 issued CA in 1956 b. Apr 9, 1911 d. Jan 1969 in Norwalk, Los Angeles, CA That is about all I can find. I hope I haven't duplicated too much here. I thought this would help me to find more. A county in Colorado and I could do more lookups in the census records, but I just don't have the time to devote to a full state search. If I had time to visit the Nat'l archives, I could locate them in the soundex index. Hi everyone! This is my first posting to this list, and I am REALLY hopeful that some kind, knowledgable person out there may have a clue or brainwave that will help us to discover something about these elusive KINGs! Alice KING was my husband's grandmother, and every scrap of information that we have about the lady comes from her marriage details: Alice KING, Spinster (no occupation given) married John George KELLOW, Widower (his occupation: Master Bootmaker) on 7th August, 1912 at Lambeth Register Office, London, England. Her age at that time was given as 28, so we're assuming a year of birth of about 1884. Her father was named as "George William KING" and his occupation was given as "Formerly a Golf Links Ground Keeper". John George KELLOW's father is listed as deceased, but as no such mention is made in the case of George William KING, the assumption is that he may still have been alive at this time. Under the section "Residence at the time of Marriage", both John George KELLOW and Alice KING gave the address of "12, Lingham Street, Stockwell" (this is part of Lambeth, London). They may have been living together at the time of marriage, but I understand that 12, Lingham Street had a number of separate flats/apartments, so it could all have been quite above board! The witnesses at the wedding were E.A. NEW, K.M. KING and A.M. HEMMINGS - perhaps a clue there somewhere, especially with "K.M. KING". This really is all the information that I have to go on, and I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed in the hope that someone on the list might recognise some small detail, and perhaps be able to point our research in a fruitful direction! Thank you so much for your help, Best wishes, Sue
So if I find a John King on the rolls he might be Black, American Indian, Irish, Dutch, German, Scotch? How then can I use or interpret the entry? I think that I saw an entry on one roll that said something like, "White person living with Indians". Further clouds the issue. How to use/interpret this entry? Could someone write about the smart/most practical/efficient way to use these rolls? It seems that these data could be useful to lots of people but we don't all have the time nor talent to read though Web pages of legislative history of why and how these file came to be. What we need is some insight about how they are laid out/constructed, problems, etc. and how can we quickly determine if we have a family connection. Hope that someone can write a few words along those lines and share with us. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 12:44 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KING] Freedmen Project-- Thank You !!!
