Thought I post it. I don't think the above James is same as legend. But same thing could have happen to above James. My Father tells of Samuel Francis King having a brother James, who fought in Civil War and marrying a girl while away. Her family being from the other side. These were in Estill-Clark Co. Ky area by 1840 Now, what I can prove. Samuel Francis King was born in 1856 and did have a brother James , but he was born in 1859, far to young to have fought in the civil war. Samuel"s father was just the right age to have a brother who fought in Civil War. So legend could be one generation off. The only problem is I can't find proof of William's parents/siblings after 20 years of searching. Might be some how connected to those in Early Bourbon co. KY 1A1i2.......... William Sanford b 1832 m Elizabeth Bradley in 1855 in Clarke. KY 1A1i2a............ Samuel Francis 1856 m Pearl Owen 1A1i2b............ Mary Elizabeth 1858 m Crittenden King #1A1i1e 1A1i2c............ James H 1859 m Kate/Kitty 1A1i2d............ Recently, I was given copies of photographs of my great-great-grandparents, Thomas E. NEEDS and Margaret L. KING. You can see the photos at the following address: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Richard-M-Schoen/PHOTO/0039photo.html Both Thomas and Margaret are brick walls for me. I've had no luck finding the parents of either one. Thomas E. NEEDS was born August 10, 1832 in Pennsylvania and he died on March 15, 1906 at Cow Run, Lawrence Township, Washington County, Ohio. Margaret L. KING was born April 6, 1834 in Monroe County, Ohio and died on March 1, 1888 at Cow Run, Lawrence Township, Washington County, Ohio. Previous message Subject was: [KING] Where was this line from before Monroe County AL around 1800? etc. To Lorrie, Rex and Brenda who offered specific suggestions and leads on how to continue my research into this line: Thanks much. I am following thru with your suggestions and recommendations one by one, delayed by the detour reflected below. For you and for anyone else who might be interested: Right after I submitted my previous inquiry to the King list, I acted upon my promise to myself that I would attempt to find out what I could about the link between my Dohahue/King line and Frank and Jesse James. I 'googled' and came up with an fascinating website containing an enormous amount of genealogical information called "Stray Leaves, A James Family in America since 1615" maintained by Eric James at: http://www.ericjames.net . The information there reflects an enormous amount of research that has been done by the descendents of the JAMES family going back as far as possible and coming forward to present times, and contains information on lines going back to the first century AD. When put together with the information I already had on this line, the site shows that my line traces back to common ancestors with Frank and Jesse James thru several lines of descent to my 5X great grandfather William KING's wife, Mary "Polly" WOODSON, who has at least two lines of descent from English ancestors who immigrated to the Virginia colony: Dr. John WOODSON, Sr. b. 1586 in England who d. 1644 in Virginia "by Indian attack" m. 1619 in England Sarah WINSTON, b 1595 in England and d. 1669 or 1670 in Virginia Frank and Jesse were descendants of Dr. John and Sarah (WINSTON) WOODSON, Sr. thru their father's (Reverend Robert Salee JAMES, b. 1818 in Kentucky, d. 1850 in California) mother (Mary "Polly" POOR, b. 1790 in Virginia, d. 1826 Kentucky). There may be other lines of connection (for example, the surname BROWN occurs in the JAMES brothers' lines as well as my own) that I have not been able to clearly define or determine as yet. The records at Eric James' site show that Mary Polly WOODSON had a sister named Nancy who married a Phillip KING who died in Warren County Tennessee (not dates). ( I believe that Phillip may be William's brother, but I need to follow up this possible lead.) (It appears that my links to Frank and Jesse JAMES are NOT close enough to add to my collection, but, in addition to my general interest in furthering knowledge of my maternal ancestors, I was quite curious about what facts lay behind this bit of family oral history because I am already a multiple qualifier for the International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists (IBSSG), another list here at rootsweb that can be a lot of fun if, as many of us have, you've found rapscallions, rotters, social outcasts and other no-goodniks among your ancestors.) Maura in Maryland, IBSSG, who has found the answer to one of her questions about her beloved Alabama grandma and looks forward to discovering more
Hi Bob: Currently my wife and I are visiting with our relatives in Texas. I checked my database and found files on two James Thomas King's. Both sets of data apparently came from a database that someone sent me that was in a nonstandard GEDCOM format; consequently, the related notes for each file did not print in a readable format. But the list of ancestors goes on for three or four generations. I just spent 50 minutes or so on my portable computer trying to see if I could determine if the two files were duplicates, but finally gave up for tonight. I did determine that the data I have shows slightly different birth and death dates and different wives. They both seem to have been descendants of Geo. Washington King, Nathaniel King and William King. Could you send me a little more information on the ancestors of your James Thomas King so I can check the files more closely? If so, I will try to get back with you after we return home where I can devote more time to your query. Tom King, Sr. Traveling in TX

My Kings migrated from North Carolina to Alabama about 1830-31. I believe they settled in Lauderdale Co. at that time, but have no real proof they were in Lauderdale Co. until about 1845. In the 1840 Lauderdale Co., AL. census there is a James M. King who I believe to be my 3rd great grandfather, but I have no proof on this. I went to all the James King listings in the 1830 NC census index and there was 1 listing in Moore Co. It was suggested to me that since a lot of people who migrated to Lauderdale Co., AL. came from Moore Co., NC, I decided to check on this. I did check all the 1830 listings for the James King's in NC and the only one that matched the 1840 listing for James M. King in Lauderdale Co., AL. was the James King in Moore Co., NC. Now I know this doesn't mean they are the same person, but it gave me something to go on. My husband and I visited Moore Co., NC. a few months ago to check out the Kings there. I really didn't find anything that would tell me that these 2 James King's were the same. However, I did get some info on the Kings that were living there--such as census records and where they lived. If these 2 James Kings are the same then I think I can pinpoint who the father was. Without going to my notes, I believe it was a Robert King. I'm almost ashamed to say, but ever since I cam back from my trip to Moore Co., I haven't really studied the material that I got. So, I really just don't know if I have a connection to Moore Co. or not, but I will list a few names that I have and if anyone can make a connection I sure would appreciate hearing from you. My 3rd great grandmother was Catherine King (maiden name unknown) born circa 1806 in NC. Her husband is unknown, but as I said I believe him to be James M. King born circa 1790-1800 NC. Catherine and her husband had at least 8 children possibly 9. They were: Alexander King born circa 1826 NC William A. King born 1827 NC John J. Arnold King born 1830 NC Stephen Colin King born 1831 AL. Emeline King born circa 1835 AL. Joseph King born circa 1836 AL. George born circa 1839 AL. Doctor Luke E. King born 1843 AL. Possibly another daughter, Caroline King born circa 1830. Catherine was in the 1850 Lauderdale Co., AL. census with all these children, but Alexander and Caroline. They had already married with households of their own. There was no husband in the household, so I can only assume that her husband had died by this time or left for whatever reason. I just can't find anything in Lauderdale Co. about this--no guardianship records or administrator's records, wills, or anything. Catherine disappears after this census, as well as several of the children-namely Alexander,Joseph, and Caroline. Also, don't know what happened to Emeline. The others either migrated to Arkansas and Tennessee or stayed in Alabama. Any help appreciated. Judy K. Sanders
Anyone researching the family of Sarah Ann King (born about 1830, died about 1888), father Walter King of Maryland? Sarah married Omer Cotton of Ohio. Their only child was Frank Cotton, born in Ohio and died in Alabama. He married twice, second to a woman named Lavina. One daughter was Hallie O. Cotton, who married Walter Scott Purdy. I am interested in a family history she was compiling back in 1931. Thanks for any assistance. Susan

Hi Folks: Need data on the parents of Ephraim KING b. Abt 1785 in NC or VA. He married Jane HARKINS Abt. 1804. One early researcher said they were married in SC, but my research of census records shows that their first two children were born in NC; children's name, James G. KING and Andrew Jackson KING (my line). This family moved to Lincoln Co. TN around 1815 when Ephraim made a purchase at an estate sale of a relative named David McCANTS. Will exchange data at no cost with related persons. Tom King, Sr. Scottsdale, AZ
