    3. Barbara, thank you. This helps a great deal not only in the quest for Mathew's father but for others who have an Indiana family who might tie in. This lets Mathew out as a son of Thomas as he was born 1807/8 so would have been an heir to Elizabeth. Eliminating a possibility is valuable. The next step then in discovering his father would be to find out who Francis's children were which may prove more difficult. >From the "Illustrated history of Lane County, Oregon" published in 1884. This was published during the lifetime of Thomas's son Harrison Kincaid who was founder and editor of the Oregon State Journal newspaper. The level of detail indicates that someone with a great deal of family knowledge was the informant. "Thomas of Oregon b July 27, 1800.... was the second son of Francis and Nancy Kincaid, who had 7 sons and five girls...His mother's maiden name was Murdock......January 9 1831 Thomas Kincaid married Miss Nancy Chodrick...At the age of 17 years Thomas Kincaid emigrated with his parents from Greenbrier Co. VA in a canoe and flat boat down the Great Kanawha and Ohio Rivers in the year 1817 to Indiana and settled eighteen miles northeast of Indianapolis on Fall Creek just below the mouth of Lick's Creek...He continued to reside in that neighborhood near where Madison, Hamilton and Hancock counties corner...In the fall of 1844 Thomas and Nancy...left their old home in Madison Co. Ind...at St Louis (MO) they were induced by the glowing description of a relative to go to Iowa Territory...They went to Wapello Co. Iowa and remained during winter and part of the next summer about three miles north of Des Moines River near Iowaville....Not liking the cold winter they started in the summer of 1845 for Texas (after traveling through Arkansas and Kentucky they ended back in Indiana in 1846)...In 1852 Thomas and Nancy started for the Oregon Territory but stopped for one year in Benton Co. Indiana." Wapello Co. Iowa is slightly north of but between Wayne Co. and Van Buran Co. It is closer to Van Buran. Any of the counties mentioned could be where siblings may be found though as a double cousin to the children of Thomas/Elizabeth Murdock, one of them might be why he wintered in a particular place.
