    1. Re: [KINCAID] facebook / kincaid group
    2. I do not know this about American Airline's claims of facebook. My experience is that facebook has been largely a teenage social networking tool that their parents' aged friends are starting to join in on. I, like you, would not appreciate belonging to a group that flaunts non-traditional values. My only concern in administering this group is that I do not know how I will go about 'screening' who joins and who doesn't. Like you, I think our group needs to be for Kincaid relatives only. Obviously, that is the whole point of the group--to be a meeting place for us to actually 'get to know one another.' I have already placed a few pictures of my family on the site. I've already reported to facebook that there should be a better way to 'organize' photos that are uploaded to the group site, but as of yet I have not found a way to make folders so any pictures are just uploaded to an ever-increasing 'stack' of pictures. Two people have requested joining the group that I did not recognize (no big surprise, since I've not been heavily involved in the Kincaid group other than to receive the mailings). I would think that the more Kincaids that are in the group, the more efficient the oversight would be, since you guys could tell me if I allowed someone into the group that noboby recognizes. I've considered requiring any person that asks to join the group e-mail me their lineage BEFORE I allow them to join. That will be rather cumbersome and will probably have the effect of driving people a way. It might be nice if a few of you do  join that (after we have a base), I will only confirm 'friends' that have been referred by someone already in the group. As I think of it, that will probably be the most effective way to handle this. I've done this long enough that I can imagine this would be the best way to handle it. If you could sign into the facebook group I have set up (it's already a closed group), you could determine if the members that have requested to join the group so far are people you recognize. Debby I don't like the fact that Facebook attracts non traditional life styles and hat they flaunt their activities. I also ran across other problems in doing a earch tonight and tend to agree with him on whether it is viable for a group as arge as the 300 or so members of the Kincaid Rootsweb List or even just the 140 articipants of the Kincaid Surname DNA Project. -----Original Message----- From: Don W. While searching to see if there is already a Kincaid Facebook site, I ran across his site: http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Kincaid-family-history-sct.ashx which as a map of Scotland showing where Kincaid's were located in 1891. lso found an article on American Airlines using Facebook platform which nforces what Peter mentioned: FORT WORTH, Texas - After more than 80 years of bringing people together through he air, American Airlines is now bringing people together through cyberspace on acebook® Platform - one of the nation's social networks most often familiar and specially popular with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender customers. Our church started a My Family site a few months ago and requires a password to ccess it or post photos, etc. and I believe any Kincaid group whether Facebook, y Family or similar programs should keep the project private to members only nd even then the administrator should be able to remove inappropriate items. Having said all this, if a Kincaid Surname Facebook project is done, I will articipate provided I have the option to opt out & remove my personal photos nd info if problems arise. I found this site dedicated to starting a surname Facebook project: ttp://fbbootcamp.blogspot.com/2008/08/creating-and-managing-group.html Don W. However, I know all those people personally, and I did not have an xtremely large graduating class! :) I am very interested that you have worked ith facebook and also studied it. Would you care to be listed as an dministrator of the site as well? You would be far more familiar with the incaids and be of great help discerning who we would want to allow in the roup. Right now, I'm not particularly fond of the idea of having it open to ust anyone and everyone, since we will probably want to post pictures and (as ou have suggested) DNA info. By the way, I wouldn't know how to set up a space or the dna numbers and participants. However, I can try to figure it out. Thanks for your response! Debby -----Original Message----- From: Don W. I had been leery of Facebook but recently had a friend start up a class group Facebook and sent me an invite to join so I went to Wikipe dia and read up on what is is and isn't nd now feel it can be a good thing if the administrator does not let it get out f control. In your facebook, search this roup--Kincaid Ancestry Family Group. I've set the group up as a closed group, so that embers will have to go through the admin to join it. I don't know if we'll want to eep the group that way, but?I thought it best to start out like that and open it p if it seems less cumbersome later. Do you want new members to give a brief synopsis of how they tie in (or think they tie in?). For me it would be Debby Potter, Virginia (Whorton) Frelander-Pendo, Helen (Kincaid) Whorton, William . Kincaid, George F. Kincaid, Thomas Kincaid, James Kincaid, Andrew Kincaid. here are family tree applications that also might be fun to try and figure out. hen you join the group, we'll have to see if it forces you to join through my personal facebook or not. If it does, I will probably just set up a whole new facebook account under my name and set up the group over again. As it is, with my HS class group, I am getting a VERY bus! y ! facebook already, and I don't think that I will necessarily want everyone that joins the kincaid group as my personal 'friends' (you know what I mean?). It just gets to be so many messages, I'd rather visit the group site as well nd get to know people as I have them join my personal facebook. Let me know your thoughts... I'll even get a photo p on mine for it - if I can find one that makes me look half way decent. Ruth Cherecwich In a message dated 12/30/2008 9:50:39 A.M.
