OK, Ruth... thanks for the reply. In your facebook, search this group--Kincaid Ancestry Family Group. I've set the group up as a closed group, so that members will have to go through the admin to join it. I don't know if we'll want to keep the group that way, but?I thought it best to start out like that and open it up if it seems less cumbersome later. Do you want new members to give a brief synopsis of how they tie in (or think they tie in?). For me it would be Debby Potter, Virginia (Whorton) Frelander-Pendo, Helen (Kincaid) Whorton, William T. Kincaid, George F. Kincaid, Thomas Kincaid, James Kincaid, Andrew Kincaid. There are family tree applications that also might be fun to try and figure out. When you join the group, we'll have to see if it forces you to join through my personal facebook or not. If it does, I will probably just set up a whole new facebook account under my name and set up the group over again. As it is, with my HS class group, I am getting a VERY busy ! facebook already, and I don't think that I will necessarily want everyone that joins the kincaid group as my personal 'friends' (you know what I mean?). It just gets to be so many messages, I'd rather visit the group site as well and get to know people as I have them join my personal facebook. Let me know your thoughts... Whoever does the Kincaid Facebook, we would like to put in a plug for space to put in the dna numbers for participants....who knows, perhaps facial features can be helpful in determining kinship like dna has been. I had been leery of Facebook but recently had a friend start up a class group Facebook and sent me an invite to join so I went to Wikipedia and read up on what is is and isn't and now feel it can be a good thing if the administrator does not let it get out of control. Don, I've been administrating a high school group since July, and it has gone really well. However, I know all those people personally, and I did not have an extremely large graduating class! :) I am very interested that you have worked with facebook and also studied it. Would you care to be listed as an administrator of the site as well? You would be far more familiar with the Kincaids and be of great help discerning who we would want to allow in the group. Right now, I'm not particularly fond of the idea of having it open to just anyone and everyone, since we will probably want to post pictures and (as you have suggested) DNA info. By the way, I wouldn't know how to set up a space for the dna numbers and participants. However, I can try to figure it out. Thanks for your response! Debby -----Original Message----- From: Don W. I will defer being a co administrator of your Facebook for Kincaid's in favor of Ruth or someone with a longer time involved with the Kincaid Rootsweb list & DNA Project. While searching to see if there is already a Kincaid Facebook site, I ran across this site: http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Kincaid-family-history-sct.ashx which has a map of Scotland showing where Kincaid's were located in 1891. Also found an article on American Airlines using Facebook platform which enforces what Peter mentioned: FORT WORTH, Texas - After more than 80 years of bringing people together through the air, American Airlines is now bringing people together through cyberspace on Facebook® Platform - one of the nation's social networks most often familiar and especially popular with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender customers. I don't like the fact that Facebook attracts non traditional life styles and that they flaunt their activities. I also ran across other problems in doing a search tonight and tend to agree with him on whether it is viable for a group as large as the 300 or so members of the Kincaid Rootsweb List or even just the 140 participants of the Kincaid Surname DNA Project. Our church started a My Family site a few months ago and requires a password to access it or post photos, etc. and I believe any Kincaid group whether Facebook, My Family or similar programs should keep the project private to members only and even then the administrator should be able to remove inappropriate items. Having said all this, if a Kincaid Surname Facebook project is done, I will participate provided I have the option to opt out & remove my personal photos and info if problems arise. I found this site dedicated to starting a surname Facebook project: http://fbbootcamp.blogspot.com/2008/08/creating-and-managing-group.html Don W.
