1744 John Kinkead, [37382] of Sadsbury Township, May 29, 1744, “It is ordered that the said Township of West Caln shall be bounded and Limited as followeth viz Beginning at a Black oak by the West Branch of Brandywine Creek at the northwest corner of Joseph Darlington’s Land, . . . thence along a line between the land of the said Wm. Ferguson and Adam Leech and the land of Robert Sandford to the said Sandfords south West corner black oak and from thence along the southern boundaries of the Lands of the said Robert Sandford, John Williams, Hugh Cowen & John Kinkead [37382] to a Black oak at the South East corner of the said Kinkead’s land from thence due east to the western branch of Brandywine Creek thence up the same to the first mentioned black oak. It is further ordered that the Plantations of Walter Guilkey, William Ferguson, and Adam Leech and all other seats andImprovements lying on the Valley Mountain to the south of the Southern boundaries of the said Township of West Caln shallBelong to the Township of Sadsbury in the County of Chester and are hereby Annexed to the same.” History of Chester County, Pennsylvania, Futhey & Cope, p. 168. West Caln was called West Caln before it was created in 1744, the township bordered John Kinkead's property in Sadsbury Township. I believe the John Kinkead below to be John Kinkead Sr. of Sadsbury Township 1763 John Kinkead [37382] of Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware stands bound to Mary Way of West Caln Township, Chester County, PA for 700 pounds on condition of payment of 350 pounds plus interest on August 1, 1766. To secure this debt John Kinkead [37382] granted to Mary Way the grist mill & 2 tracts of land in West Caln Township, Chester County, PA containing 5 acres & 45 acres, which Mary Way deeded to John Kinkead, [37382] April 11, 1763. Date of deed, April 12, 1763, recorded, September 22, 1763. I believe that the Samuel Kinkead below is the son of John Kinkead of Sadsbury Township and the same John who purchased the 50 acres and grist mill from Mary Way. 1765 Samuel Kinkead [119921] taxed in West Caln Township, Chester County, PA for 100 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, 5 sheep. Pennsylvania Archives, s. 3, v. 11, p. 87. I believe that Samuel either assumed the mortgage or purchased the 50 acres from his father John Kinkead sometime between 1765 and 1771. When I was at the Chester County Archives and Record Service I did not come across a deed of sale between Samuel Kinkead and Caleb Way or Samuel Kinkead and John Kinkead or Mary Way. He then sold the 50 acres to Caleb Way. Caleb Way's property in West Caln borders that of Charles Kinkead, deceased, in Sadsbury Township. 1811 Charles Kinkead, [000019] deceased, land late of, adjoining land warranted to Caleb Way, West Caln Township, Chester County, PA June 1, 1787, 141 acres, 53 perches, surveyed May 25, 1811, other adjacent land owners, John Withrow, Isaac Yearsley, late John Ramsay, Thomas Mee, formerly, Michael Baldridge, and Caleb Way. The above draft describes a tract of land situate in West Caln Township, Chester County, PA, containing 141 acres, 53 perches & allowance of six per cent. Note, I am unable to ascertain how long the above described tract of land has been improved. The old settlers adjoining are principally dead and removed. It is rough hilly & somewhat broken, which renders it out of my power to form a correct opinion from observation. I must therefore refer you for information to the application in the secretary’s office. Andrew Porter, Esquire, Surveyor General. Pennsylvania State Archives, RG-17, Records of the Land Office, COPIED SURVEYS, 1681-1912, D-33, p. 56. 1812 Samuel Kinkead, [119921] 51 ¾ of land bought of Samuel Kinkead [119921] to son Jacob Way, in Caleb Way’s will, of West Caln, Chester County, PA, will written, March 28, 1812, proved, Nov. 20, 1812. Chester County Will Abstracts, 1801-1825, p. 174. I believe that Samuel Kinkead, son of John Kinkead of Sadsbury Township moved to Fawn Township, York County after the purchase of 270 acres in Fawn Township. 1771 Joseph & Thomas Kincaid. [119921] Situate in Fawn Township in the County of York. Containing as above set forth 271 acres & 61 perches and allowance of land, originally surveyed by William Matthews, late D.S. on the 24th day of the 1st month 1771 for Archibald White. In pursuance of a warrant which was granted to Alexander McCandless (Poplar Quarter) bearing the date 6th of June 1749. And now on the 16th day of June 1813 the same has been calculated examined & found to be correct and at the request of the present owner Joseph & Thomas Kincaid, [119921] the same is returned for confirmation. Adjacent land owners: Joseph Ross, Barrens, William Smilee, Barrens, Barrens, Thomas Brannon, Per Jacob Spangler, D.S. To Andrew Porter, Esq’r. Surveyor General, Harrisburg. This warrant was filed before York County was formed August 17, 1749 and thus is listed in Lancaster County, PA warrants. 1772 Samuel Kinkead [119921] bought from Archibald White 270 acres in Fawn Township, York County, PA on January 2, 1772. Charles Kincaid [ccckincaid@netzero.net] to Norman Kincaide (LNG-CSP), Monday, March 31, 2008, 7:16 PM. I believe that John Kinkead taxed in West Caln is the same as John Kinkead of Sadsbury or John Jr. and later John Kinkead son of Samuel Kinkead working his property until sold to Caleb Way. I believe that the 50 acres and grist mill may have been adjacent to John Kinkead's property in Sadsbury Township or very close by. Sincerely Norman Kincaide

John`s 200 acre grant seems to have mostly remained in Sadsbury township. Then there is the 50 acre mill site. However, in 1765, based on your timeline, we have: 1765 Samuel Kinkead taxed in West Caln Township, Chester County, PA for 100 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, 5 sheep. PA, s. 3, v. 11, p. 87. 1765 Robert Kinkead taxed in West Caln Township, Chester County, PA for 65 acres, 1 horse, 2 cows, 1 sheep. PA, s. 3, v. 11, p. 87. 1765 John Kinkead taxed in West Caln Township, Chester County, PA for 50 acres, 2 horses. PA, s. 3, v. 11, p. 87. 1765 Robert Kinkead taxed in East Caln Township, Chester County, PA for 250 acres, 2 horses, 1 cow. PA, s. 3, v. 11, p. 84. The fifty acres held by John in West Caln must be the mill site as he is identified as holding such in later tax lists. So where did Samuel`s 100 acres and Robert of East Caln`s 250 acres come from?
