    3. Almost all references to Kincaid in Albemarle Co. are Kinkead. Gradually the shift to Kincaid starts showing up in records but not everyone changed the spelling. For instance Kinkead Caldwell, son of Samuel Caldwell and perhaps a Kincaid wife, spelled his name Kinkead until he died in the early 1800's but his wife Sarah Kincaid's father spelled his name Kincaid as did most of the other Greenbrier families. Many of the Greenbrier families can be traced directly to Albemarle Co. where they were Kinkead. I think during the 1700's it has more to do with whose writing the particular document and who taught them to write then what the prefered spelling would be. 3. <<Almost all references to Kincaid in Albemarle Co. are Kinkead. >> Just as an aside to this name spelling, most early records for David Kinkead/Winifred prior to 1733 spell his name Kinkade (10 records). But Winifred's initial court record in 1728/29 changing her name is to the Kinkead spelling. In Spottsylvania from February through May 1733, his name is spelled Kinkead in 6 straight records. But in June it goes back to Kinkade for 15 out of the next 18 records until June 1734. Between June 1734 and 1743 in Spottsylvania, Goochland and Orange counties it is spelled Kinkead 46 times to 2 as Kinkade, and 4 spellings of Kindred. The spelling may be more related to which clerk recorded the records. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Liedtke" <seleaml@actionnet.net> To: <kincaid@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2008 12:22 PM Subject: Re: [KINCAID] DNA chart, Rev Jos.
