    3. Heather- I'm going to post your enquiry on the Kincaid Rootsweb list: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/k/kincaid.html#KINCAID . If there's an answer to your question, several experts there will know it. Dick Kinkead ----- Original Message ----- From: Heather Vallance To: rkinkead11@comcast.net Sent: Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:14 AM Subject: Thomas KINKADE Blake Richard, I received your email from Nancy at Kinkead Ridge. I am a family friend who is a writer and historian. I noticed in one of Nancy's recent blog posts that Kinkead is sometimes spelled Kinkade. This intrigues me as I have been researching a John Young Filmore Blake for the past 10 years. He was a much maligned historical player at the end of the 19th century. Blake's father was Thomas Kinkade Blake who was born in Tennessee in 1813. His father was Thomas Blake born in Georgia just after the Revolutionary war. The Blakes have Cherokee, Chickasaw and 'English' heritage. I and several Blake family members have been trying to see where and how the bloodlines mingled. We cannot explain the origin of the name KINKADE in the family line, nor are some of us certain if the name BLAKE is actually an inherited name. Many Cherokee 'adopted' names, usually of benefactors, and this is still a possibility with the Blake family line. Much of the information on the Internet on this Blake line is hopeful, confused and just downright inaccurate. It got there via another group of family historians who find the 'Indian' part of their heritage a bit difficult to accept. I am curious to know if you have on your KINKADE files anything resembling the following: Thomas Blake born Georgia (Floyd County) - parents unknown. Thomas Blake born Georgia married Elizabeth Owen of Alabama. They lived in Roane County TN but more in the area where Cherokee still resided. Some Blake historians believe that Elizabeth Owen was full-blood Cherokee. Offspring: 7 children with only two actually identified: Thomas Kinkade Blake II and Larkin H. Blake the father of Betty Blake who married Will Rogers. There is a William G. Blake who was related to this Blake line but there is no documentation to suggest that he was one of the 7 children. Thomas Kinkade Blake II married Clara T. Chitty believed to be at least half Chickasaw by some family historians and supported by secondary documentation. According to reports Cherokee papers still exist in some branches of the Blake family. There was a Chickasaw leader circa 1890s by the name of Joseph Kinkade but we have not yet established a link to this branch. For reference: http://angloboerwar.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/john-young-filmore-blake-a-genealogy/ You will notice from this link that Thomas KINKADE Blake carries strong 'Indian' heritage in his features. As a younger man he wore a beard but as an elder he plucked his beard in the traditional way. Any clarification will be much appreciated. Sincerely, Heather Vallance

    3. Hey I am two for two in terms of memory. I forwarded to you the post about Chief Joseph Kincaid. The following relates to a Thomas Kincaid who was an Indian Scout for General Custer. I might have gotten the pony express part wrong but I was right about him carrying messages.
