    3. The Rev. Alexander Calhoun was Vicar of Templecarne Parish, Pettigo from 1698 to 1717 and may be buried in Carne Graveyard. His great grandson, John Caldwell Calhoun was born in South Carolina, in 1782. He was elected to South Carolina’s state legislature in 1808 and three years later entered the House of Representatives. As chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, he introduced the declaration of war against Britain in 1812. In 1817 Calhoun was appointed Secretary of War, a post he held for eight years. Calhoun became vice president of the United States in 1824 under John Quincy Adams and was re-elected in 1828 under Andrew Jackson. He resigned in 1832 over tariffs, which hurt the slave-owning South. Thus John C. Calhoun became the first U.S. vice-president ever to resign. John Caldwell Calhoun died in Washington, D.C. in 1850 and was buried in Charleston. In 1957, United States Senators honoured Calhoun as one of the five greatest senators of all time.
