That is an interesting angle Richard. I can't say for sure as I have not researched it. I have seen the Quinquet name appear in the US in the 1800s. I don't recall seeing it in Quebec. However, some of the names connected to the family (like Barre) I have seen in my own family tree (I have maternal French ancestry). It makes me wonder about there being Kincaids on both sides of my family now. I am also interested in the military angle. I can see these Quinquets serving in regiments sent to Canada and perhaps southern and western US (before the Louisiana purchase). It makes on wonder about 18th century Kincaid and Quinquet encounters. Perhaps as we research more we will get more of an answer. Peter- Somebody has to ask the dumb question so I’ll volunteer: Did any of the French lines make it to Canada, survive and thrive there? In response to an email sent to me from Don, I want to add the following. Montfaut is supposed to be in the area of what is now called Poilly-lez-Gien. The Quinquet name was famous in France in the late 1700s due to a lamp improved upon and promoted by Antoine Quinquet. This was what we call the Argand lamp. To the French it was the Quinquet lamp. Argand patented the basics of the lamp, but Quinquet came up with the glass chimney idea. My understanding is that he was of the Soisson Quinquets. If we can connect them back to the Quinquets of Montfaut or to the Kincaids of Scotland, then we have another famous Kincaid inventor. Best wishes! Hello everyone, Recently, I was contacted by a French person by the name of Charles Abbatucci. He provided me with some key information to help unlock a whole new area of Kincaid research; namely that of Kincaids in France. Early in our Kincaid history, the mid 1400s, at least one Kincaid went to France to serve in the French Scots Guard. The name Kincaid was rendered in the French tongue mainly as Quinquet (I have also seen Quinqued, Quincayt, and likely Quinget). One of these Kincaids founded a line that produced some successful Kincaids; namely the Quinquets of Mountfaut and Vielle-Ferté. Due to the importance of this new line of research I have put together a little paper using tidbits I've collected and which Charles Abbatucci pointed me to. This is on the Kyncades.org website at: http://kyncades.org/montfaut.pdf This is not the only successful Quinquet line in France. There was another group centered around Soissons that generated a long line of successful lawyers. I have yet to piece together their connection to the Kincaids. Years ago, I also became aware of a line of Quingets in Belgium and France that were thought to have been Kincaids, but the link remains elusive. The Quingets were one of the richest in Antwerp in the mid 1400s. It is easy to see that the Quinquets of Montfaut and Vielle-Ferté were Kincaids from Scotland because of their association with the Scots guard and their coat of arms being the same as the Kincaids in Scotland. Until solid connections are found for the Quingets and Quinquets of Soisson, it is hard to declare them to be Kincaids. Perhaps Charles Abbatucci will help solve this for us. This also opens another angle for DNA research. Hopefully, we can confirm the Kincaid connections. That they branched off in the 1400s and 1500s should be quite helpful in determining what the DNA signature of our Kincaid patriarch. I give a special thanks to Charles Abbatucci for providing the missing pieces of the puzzle for this family. I invite all you serious Kincaid researchers to keep an eye out for records relating to the Quinguets in France. Best wishes! Peter A.
