    1. [KINCAID] 28835 & 1255 lineages in brief
    2. Sue Liedtke
    3. Don has suggested that the list might benefit by knowing where 28835 & 1255 are in vetting their lines back to David & Winnefred. I am taking the liberty of posting a sketchy version of what has been sent to me. Deanne and Amon may want to supply more details. 28835 is vetted to Preston m Katherine Hawkins. Deanne has a preliminary vetting post but is still working on details. There is census data supporting the line. Preston's Social Security Application says he was born 2/4/1885 Sharpsburg, Bath Co. KY. His parents are listed as John and Martha Lemons Kincaid. John Kincaid b 1843 Bath Co. KY d 1920 Mayslick, Mason Co. KY m Martha Lemmons Nov 17, 1877 Harrison Co. KY. Settlement of heirs for James H. Kincaid, Owingsville, KY March 17, 1855 lists John Hawkins Guardian of William Riley, Martha Jane, John, Mary Rebecca, infant heirs of James H. Kincaid James Harvey Kincaid b 1814 Clark Co. KY d 1846 Bath Co. KY m Mary Ann Hawkins 22 Jan 1838 Bath Co. KY. John Hawkins above was her father. James H is listed in application of Rebecca Evans Kincaid for widow's pension based on her husband Robert Kincaid's service. Robert Kincaid b July 24, 1761 Alb Co. VA d Oct 20, 1844 Bath Co. KY. m Rebecca Evans. Listed in family Bible as son of John Kincaid and Elizabeth Logan. There is also a deed sequence showing that this Robert is the same one that was in Washington Co. VA and is son of John/Elizabeth. John Kincaid b Sept 14, 1736 d after 1810 prob Clark KY m 21 April 1756 Alb Co. VA, Elizabeth Logan. The deed sequence refered to above establishes that this John Kincaid was in Washington Co. VA prior to coming to KY. KY deeds establish that this John's wife was Elizabeth. John Kincaid m Elizabeth Logan is son of David and Winnefred Hobson Kincaid. The connection has been discussed a lot on list so I refer you to the archives for data. Clark and Bath Co. KY are separated from each other by Montgomery Co. ______________________ 1255 is vetted to Sherod A Kincaid and Eliza Hughes. Going back is more complicated for Amon as Jackson Co. Ala is a burned county and only sketchy records exist. Sherod is listed in the 1850 Newton Co. Ark census as 29 with wife Eliza, her sister Jane Hughs and 3 of his sons. In the 1860 census Eliza has died and Sherod had married her sister Jane and added 4 more children. Sharod was born in TN c 1820. Both Eliza and Jane were born in Alabama. All children were born in Arkansas, the eldest Jos. P b 1846. Listed above Sherod in the 1850 Arkansas census is Elizabeth Kincade age 54 b NC, widow. In her household are Joseph 20 TN, Nancy 16 Ala, Elizabeth 15 Ala, William 11 Ala. Joseph Kincaid is listed in the 1840 and 1830 Jackson Co. Ala census with members of his household matching Elizabeth's census with the addition of Sharod as male b 1820-1825. There is evidence that Joseph Kincaid of Larkinsville, Jackson Co. Ala organized a wagon train headed for Ark in 1842. There was a movement of people from Franklin Co. to Jackson Co. in the 1820's. The 1820 Franklin Co. TN census lists Joseph 16-26, wife 16-26 and 1 male under 10. Franklin Co. TN is just above Jackson Co. Ala. Next door to Joseph in 1820 is Hobson Kingcade, over 45, with his family. Hobson Kincaid m Sarah McClure about 1782 or 83 in Washington Co. VA. Amon has a time line that follows Hobson and Sarah back to Clark Co. KY where we find the Bible record listing Hobson as son of John & Elizabeth Logan. There doesn't appear to be records for Hobson after 1831 when he goes to Russell Co. VA (Russell from Scott Co. from Washington Co.) to take care of some estate details concerning his wife's inheritance. He can't be found in the 1830 census. Sue Liedtke

    1. [KINCAID] Obit: Kathleen 'Kat' Kinkade, 77; Pioneer Started Va. Commune
    2. This appeared in today's Washington Post: By Joe Holley Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, July 16, 2008; Page B05 Kathleen "Kat" Kinkade, 77, a founding member of a rural Virginia commune called Twin Oaks Community, died July 3 of complications related to bone cancer. She had been a resident of Twin Oaks, about 35 miles southeast of Charlottesville, since its beginning in 1967. Eighty-five income-sharing adults and 15 children continue the communal experiment Ms. Kinkade helped originate. Each member receives food, housing, health care and personal spending money from the community, whose income derives primarily from making high-quality rope hammocks, casual furniture, indexing books and tofu. Her involvement with communal living began when she was a 36-year-old secretary and single mother in Los Angeles and happened to read "Walden Two," a utopian fantasy by Harvard psychologist B.F. Skinner. The novel imagines a self-contained communal society of 1,000 people who solve life's problems through behavioral engineering. "I read 'Walden Two' throughout one day, breaking only to get up and pace the floor and shout, 'This is what I want!' " Ms. Kinkade told The Washington Post in 1998. She wrote Skinner, asking whether there was a real Walden Two that she could join, but got no reply. A friend pointed out a small classified ad in a magazine from a D.C. cabdriver named Wayne who was interested in launching a Walden Two community. Ms. Kinkade and her daughter moved across the country to join Wayne's group house. Wayne went his own way, and Ms. Kinkade married another boarder in the house. The couple eventually found a fellow "Walden Two" enthusiast who provided seed money to lease a small tobacco farm southeast of Charlottesville. She, her husband and her daughter were among the eight Twin Oaks founders. Unlike thousands of other communes that sprang up in the 1960s only to succumb to the perplexities of shared living, Twin Oaks gradually began to flourish, despite early hardship and dissension. It grew to almost a hundred communards, became a self-sustaining land trust of 450 efficiently managed acres and began to thrive financially when it signed a long-term contract with Pier 1 for its hammocks. Although she was involved in founding two other income-sharing communities -- in Missouri and Virginia -- she told The Post in 1998 that communal life had not measured up to her expectations. "My mother was disappointed that Twin Oaks did not turn out to be the model for what the rest of our society would be," said her daughter, Dr. Josie Kinkade of Louisa, Va. "When she found out that it was really just a nice place for some middle-class people to live, she was disappointed." Kinkade said she reminded her mother that she had created a "university of life," and she seemed satisfied with that assessment. Ms. Kinkade was born in Seattle, grew up poor during the Depression and became the first person in her working-class family to go to college, when she attended the University of Washington for a year. She dropped out to marry an Army sergeant. When the marriage dissolved, she took her 4-year-old daughter to live in Mexico City, where she taught English to first-graders at a private school. She returned to the United States in 1960, got a job as a secretary and became a folk dancer. She encountered "Walden Two" as an assignment for a class she was taking during night school. Although the novel was the inspiration for her communal vision, Twin Oaks, as it evolved, bore little resemblance to Skinner's utopian fantasy. She quickly discovered communal living was devilishly difficult. "Freeloading hippies began to turn up," reporter Tamara Jones noted in a 1998 Washington Post magazine story. "Personality clashes made living cooperatively a constant challenge." She found herself swamped with administrative chores and complaints that she was too authoritarian. Eventually, the community brought in facilitators to mediate the power struggle, and their recommendations resulted in more democratic governance. Although Ms. Kinkade persevered, the challenge never got easier. "She left Twin Oaks once, 'with a man, but he wasn't mine,' " she once told The Post, "and she started a new commune that also frustrated and disappointed her. She ventured into the outside world for a while, then surprised herself by coming back." She also got involved in sacred harp music through the nearby Yanceyville Church, where, as an atheist, she sang in the choir because she loved the harmonious, shape-note singing of the sacred harp tradition. At 70, she moved into a tiny house in nearby Mineral (the first house she had ever owned) and enjoyed planting flowers and rescuing abandoned kittens. When she became too weak to live alone, Twin Oaks took her back in and community members tended to her needs until her death. Ms. Kinkade's marriages to Donald Logsdon and George Griebe ended in divorce. In addition to her daughter, from her first marriage, survivors include a granddaughter. **************Get the scoop on last night's hottest shows and the live music scene in your area - Check out TourTracker.com! 3. Dear Kinkead Listers, This John Kinkead could be my John Kinkead, son of George.  But I am not sure. He is in the same company as Corp. Andrew Kinkead, son of George.  And his trail follows the direction of my John in his journey to Union Township, Erie County, PA.  He also assigns his donation land to Isaac Craig.  The John Kincaid cited in the Notes and Queries was born in Cumberland County, PA, was about 18 years old, and enlisted for 18 months which I took to mean the Pennsylvania Continent Line as an 18 months man.  I still don't understand completely the enlistment between militia and Continental line.  Some in the Continental Line enlisted for the duration, others for 7 months and others for 18 months.  My John was definitely in the Cumberland County, PA Militia.  I think it's him with his brother Andrew in Capt. William Wilson's Company.  And his note to the powers that be about his Donation land sounds like my line. Sincerely Norman Kincaide 1780 John Kinkead, [000024] private, in Capt. 3. Dear Kincaid-listers, I have looked into the several John Kinkeads of the Pennsylvania Continental Line. John Kinkead, formerly of Lancaster County, PA was a carpenter and served to help build Fort McIntosh. He was in the Washington County, PA Militia and not the Penn. Continental Line.  John Kinkead, artificer, was also a carpenter in the Artillery & Artificer Corps attached to Col. Isaac Craig's Detachment, 1st Penn. Cont. Line at Fort Pitt at the end of the war.  He had a cousin in William Wilson's Co.., 1st Penn. Regt. is timeline will follow in a succeeding email.  I believe that this John Kinkead may be the son of Andrew Kinkead, carpenter, of York County, later of Carlisle and Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA. 3. Dear Kincaid-listers, I have also found more on James Kinkead, Coroner & Recorder of Westmoreland County, PA.  I am now pretty sure that Samuel Kinkead (died 1840) of Butler County, PA is the son of James Kinkead of Westmoreland County, PA.  The proximity of John Kinkead, formerly of Lancaster County, PA and James Kinkead, Recorder of Westmoreland County, PA to the John and James Kinkead of Smith Township, Washington County, PA also make me believe that they are related to them.  This is the territory of the Kincaids from the Ben Dixon book.  I now have enough circumstancial evidence to place them within the Sadsbury, West Caln, East Caln Townships, Chester County, PA Kincaid family cluster.  I still haven't found where or when James Kinkead, Recorder died, but Armstrong County, PA might be the place to look. 1. [KINCAID] John Kinkead, Jr. formerly of Lancaster County, PA

    3. Dear Kincaid-listers, with all of this time on my hands I have had the opportunity to make some discoveries             and to make some determinations concerning some mysterious Kincaids in Pennsylvania.         First is John Kinkead, Jr. formerly of Lancaster County, PA, the first citation to whom follows. I now believe that this John Kinkead is the brother of Samuel Kinkead of Fawn Township, York County, PA, who died in 1779.  Samuel mentioned his property on Petters Creek and that is where John Kinkead ends up. And his sister Mary Kinkead is the Mary Kinkead of Bedford County, PA.  He is therefore connected to Michael Kinkead of Hamilton Bann's Township, York County, PA.  And is therefore connected to the Kincaids of Sadsbury and West Caln Townships, Chester County, PA.  It is strange that a James Kincaid & a John Kincaid are taxed in Smith Township, Washington County, PA both before and after the 1790 Census, but they are no where to be found in the Washington County, PA ennumeration; I went through it column by column and they are not there.  You can follow John Kinkead Jr. by searching on [000003] Be advised I tried the plain text deal.  We'll see how it looks. Sincerely Norman Kincaide 1769       John Kinkead, [000003] Jr., formerly of Lancaster County, PA, applied for a warrant to take up                         300 acres in  Washington County, PA (Cumberland County, PA in 1769) of new purchase lands,                 now in Allegheny County, PA, dated, June 27, 1769, application #3562, New Purchase, warrant                     #25, patentee, John Douglas, Nov. 10, 1784, name of tract, Bucks Forest. 3. Thank you. It was worth a shot but doesn't look like James could be son to David d 1795 or to any of David's sons. Unless 28835 and 1255 can find a common ancestor downline from John/Elizabeth Logan it looks like John or his father David/Winnefred may have carried the mutation to 11 at marker 4. Neither of these participants are vetted to John/Elizabeth but both have some circumstantial evidence that this is the correct linkage by different sons to John/Elizabeth. IF the linkages are correct then 11207 who does not have the mutation cannot be a son to Hobson. 1. Re: [KINCAID] Sue Re: Joining The Kincaid Project
    2. Thanks, Sue. Thomas S. Kincaid was born 7 Aug 1818 in Kentucky (according to my info). He died 27 Dec 1866. He and Marena Siverly were married 24 Jun 1841 in Henry, Illinois. I think she may have been born 27 Jan 1822. George F. Kincaid was born in April, 1850 in Mercer Co., Illinois. He died in Hutchinson, KS. I have not been back to Hutchinson to photograph his grave, or I would have his exact death date. He's buried in Nickerson, KS. His son, William T. Kincaid was born 23 Jul 1877 in Butler Co., KS and died 6 Sep 1949 in Wichita, KS. He was in the Spanish American War. He and his wife are also buried at Wildmead Cemetery in Nickerson, KS. W.T. and May's son, Richard, died at the age of 3 (about 1910). I have the newspaper clipping somewhere, but I would have to hunt up the exact date. My grandma (their only other child) is Helen Kincaid Whorton. She was born 28? Jun 1908 (I think in Denver, CO) and died 9 Jan 2005 in Spearfish, SD at my mom's home. She spent most of her adult life in Junction City, KS and worked at Fort Riley. She became quite accomplished there and we're anticipating that they will be displaying her life accomplishments there at the museum. She was truly a woman out of her time. Anyway, I have some genealogy beyond Thomas S. and Marena, but I honestly feel that I don't have a lot of supporting evidence for George F. Kincaid's parentage right now. Our local chapter of the DAR is helping me with this. What I do think is that Thomas S. Kincaid's parents are James Kincaid (b. 18 Apr 1788 in Cumberland, PA m. 5 May 1816 in Montgomery, KY and d. 11 Jan 1856 in Henry, Illinois) and Polly Sanders Kincaid (b. and d. unknown). I have James' parents as Andrew Kincaid and Martha Townsley Kincaid (of Archibald/Andrew and Janet/Martha Townsley fame). Life has not slowed down in the last 10 years to allow me to keep up with my genealogy the way I would like to, and sometimes I feel like I'm having to re-invent the wheel. But my sister and brother are doing it with me now, and so we kind of help each other with keeping track of it all. I appreciate you taking your time to help me. Thanks... 3. I found this Charles L. Kincaid living very near Andrew/Andreas Kincaid, in Tulare County, CA in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Andrew was the son of the Mathew Kincaid who was a friend/and or relative of Kit Carson. I think that this was the same Charles Kincaid of Scotland County, MO.
