    3. The Mary Kincaid who bought lots in the town of Bedford in 1767 may have been a widow. She was old enough to buy the land---for her family?--and she had the money to do so. So it is questionable that she was young and never married. She receives 100 acres from her brother. Last Will & Testament of Samuel Kinkead, proved April 3, 1779, Inventory filed, May 12, 1779 In the name of God, Amen, I Samuel Kinkaid [000004]being in perfect health of body and of sound memory, blessed be God this twenty sixth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six, make and publish this my last will and testament. Who was she if Archibald and Andrew's mother, Mary appears in 1767? In 2006 I went to the Pennsylvania State Archives to do research on counties that I had not researched:Butler and York. But there was a micorfilm roll of taxables for Cumberland County, PA. And I had this Samueal Kinkead in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA for 1762 and I just wanted to confirm that he was there and that I hadn't made a mistake. Here are the taxables for Cumberland County, PA in 1762: 1762 John Kinkead, [93625] merchant of Carlisle, taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA for 150 warranted acres. Cumberland County Tax Record Roll 1399, Pennsylvania State Archives. 1762 James Kinkead [1259] taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA. This is the only citation to this Samuel. But his presence leaves open the possibility of other offspring for this family cluster. And it also adds weight to Andrew the Carpenter being the father of Andrew & Archibald Kinkead of Tyrone Township. It also cleans up the timeline. 3. Mary- The Kincaid-list DNA test results would be most interesting. You see discussions of it here. It is simple and painless: swab the special little wands on the inside of the cheeks, replace them in the special test tubes, send in to Family Tree DNA and wait 6-8 weeks. Financial help is available if you need it. BTW, my brother (born 1953) is John Robert Kinkead. My brick wall is Mary (Land) Kinkead d.1795 in Westmoreland Co, PA, which is why I'm watching Norman's research closely. I'm certain that her husband, my gggggf David Kinkead, was somehow related to the Kinkead clan there, which is why he moved there from Burlington, NJ, to begin with. 3. I believe that Mary Kinkead who warranted two lots in Bedford, Cumberland County, later Bedford County was never married.  She is never referred to as widow.  Here is a timeline for her: 1767 Mary Kinkaid [000004] warranted lots 57 & 58 in Bedford Town, Cumberland County, PA, January 19,             1767. 3. I believe that Mary Kinkead in Bedford County, PA to be the sister to Samuel Kinkead of Fawn Township, York County, PA, see his will below: 1779 Samuel Kinkcaid, [000004] Fawn Township, York County, PA, will written March 26, 1776, proved April 30, 1779. In manner following that is   to say first, I give to my brother John, [000004] fifty acres of any land where it may not hurt the place    but most convenient for both places.  Next, I give to my sister Mary [000004] one hundred acres of   any place.  Next I give to my cousin Samuel Kinkaid, [000004] son to Michael Kinkaid, [000004]   one hundred acres of my land near Fitchburgh  (This was difficult to read and could have been Pittsburgh)   on Petters Creek.  Next I give to my cousin Michael Kinkaid [000004] all my chattels and goods he     has now in his possesion.  And I do make and ordain my cousin Michael Kinkaid [000004] to be my   whole executor of this my last will and testament in trust for the intention and purpose in this my will   contained and in witness where of I the  said Samuel Kinkaid [000004] have to this my last will and   testament set my hand and seal the day and year above mentioned.    Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of us. Samuel Kinkaid [000004] Hugh Artens John Shultz York County               Before me Archibald McClean, Register for the Probate of Will and granting letters of administration in   and for the County of York in the Commonwealth of  Pennsylvania personally came Hugh Artens and John   Shultz the two subscribing witnesses to the foregoing instrument of writing and on their solemn oaths in the   common form of law do severally and respectively testify that they were personally present at the time when   the before named Samuel Kinkead [000004]executed the before written instrument of writing, but do not   particularly recollect his signing or sealing or publishing the same.  But he, the said Samuel Kinkead being   then engaged as a soldier in the Continental Service, they effectively understood it to be his last will and   testament, which he then made  before he would march.  That the names Hugh Artens and John Shultz are    respectively of the said deponents own hand writing and that they respectively are fully assured that they   would not have signed their names there to as witnesses unless they had seen the same signed, sealed and   published, the further that the said Samuel Kinkead [000004] was at that time of sound and disposing mind    memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge and belief, and farther that they did sign their names   there to in his presence and also in the presence of each other. Cumberland County Tax Record Roll 1399, Pennsylvania State Archives. 1762 George Kinkead [4164] taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA. Cumberland County Tax Record Roll 1399, Pennsylvania State Archives. 1762 Samuel Kinkead taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA at 1. Cumberland County Tax Record Roll 1399, Pennsylvania State Archives. 1762 John Kinkade, [93625] merchant of Carlisle, taxed in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA. Cumberland County Tax Record Roll 1399, Pennsylvania State Archives. 1762 Andrew Kinkade [000018] taxed in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA for 1 lot. Cumberland County Tax Record Roll 1399, Pennsylvania State Archives. Here are the taxables for 1763: 1763 Andrew Kinkead, [000018] carpenter, taxed in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA for lot # 288. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1763 Widow Kinkead [1263] taxed in lower Tyrone Township, Cumberland County, PA for 100 unwarranted acres. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1763 Andrew Kinkead [000018] taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA, no acres. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1763 George Kinkead [4164] taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA for 200 acres.. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1763 James Kinkead [1259] taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1763 John Kinkead, [93625] merchant of Carlisle, taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberalnd County, PA for 300 acres. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA The widow in Lower Tyrone Township, Cumberland County, PA is most likely the wife of Samuel Kinkead of Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA. This is the only citation to this Samuel. But his presence leaves open the possibility of other offspring for this family cluster. And it also adds weight to Andrew the Carpenter being the father of Andrew & Archibald Kinkead of Tyrone Township. It also cleans up the timeline. Here are the taxables for 1761: 1761 George Kinkead [4164] taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA, no acres. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1761 John Kinkead, [93625] merchant of Carlisle taxed in Middleton Township, Cumberland County, PA for 300 warranted acres. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA 1761 Andrew Kinkead, [000018] inmate, taxed in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA. Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, PA I also discovered a possible earlier connection between the Kinkeads of Cumberland County, PA and Michael Kinkead of York County, PA. A John Agnew is listed as one of the mortgagees with John Kinkead, Merchant of Carlisle: 1765 John Kinkead, [93625] merchant of Carlisle, John Steel, John Vanleer, & John Agnew, all of Carlisle, received from Joseph Boyd, mason of Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA, a mortgage of 26 pounds.16.2 due October 1, 1765 for: a house & lot in Carlisle on Pomfret St. & 1 horse cart, 1 feather bed, 3 quilts, 1 chaff bed, 2 blankets, 1 tea table & equipage, 1 pewter basin, 6 plates,1 tankard, 1 spade, 1 shovel, 1 crowbar & sledge, 1 silk damask gown, 1 large bible & 10 small books, 2 silver teaspoons, 1 chest with sundry goods, carpenter tools, 1 trowel, 1 hammer, 2 brackets, & 1 tub. 3. Non Paternity Events > 1. An illegitimate male child to a single woman takes her surname Number 1. was apparently what happened in my husband Ted47327 who was given a middle name of the father who legally said he would raise him after marrying his mother. When Ted took the DNA test he was put in the adoption file. I use the word apparently as his parents are gone, all documents I have confirm what I stated. I personally believe he is the grandson of Isaac and Vina Summers Kincaid but unless a male from their family will take the DNA test my belief means nothing. 2. 11. Mother of two has a boyfriend. She gets pregnant. Boyfriend dies. Female Child (age 11) of mother goes to court to petition for a name change to that of mother's deceased boyfriend. Judge grants request. Pregnant mother delivers baby and correctly gives him deceased boyfriend's surname. Female 11 year old grows up and has two children while unmarried. 3. 10. A young underage girl in the family has a male child out of wedlock, and her parents avoid the stigma and impact on the girl's future, by treating the child as their son rather than grandson. This happened in my own family, but with a girl child (even chance it could have been a boy) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don W. 1. [KINCAID] David Kinkead married to Rebecca Osborn
    2. Norman Kincaide
    3. After further study I believe that David Kincaid who married Rebecca Osborn is the son of John Kinkead of Bart Township, Lancaster County, PA, who I believe to be the John Kinkead of Oxford Township, Chester County, PA and son of John Kinkead of Sadsbury Township, Chester County, PA.  I believe that the early portion of the history of this Kincaid line in Ben Dixon's book is flawed.  So I took the actual facts and looked at them.  The short timeline below indicates the early record of this line. 1750 John Kinkade, Jr. [000022] born to John Kinkade [000022] & wife Jayne Scott in either Ireland  or Penn. 1761 James Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade & Jayne [000022]  in Ireland. 1765 Hannah Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade [000022] & Jayne Scott in Penn. married David or                 Daniel Johnson. 1768 Nancy Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade & Jayne [000022]  in Penn. married Samuel Kennedy. 1770 Elisabeth Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade [000022] & Jayne Scott in Penn. married David Davis. 1772 James Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade Jr. & Polly Davis in Penn. 1775 David Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade Jr. [000022] & Polly Davis in Penn. 1775 Margaret Kinkade [000022] born to John Kinkade [000022] & Jayne Scott in Penn. 1801 Andrew Kinkade [000022] born in PA, father b PA, mother b NJ, in 1880 Census, in Bethel Township,             Monroe County, OH. USFC, 1880, p. 424C. 1802 Andrew Kinkade [000022] born to David Kinkade [000022] & wife Rebecca Osborn on May 12, 1802 in         Greene County, PA. None of the above births can be confirmed through any bible record or any list from the Pennsylvania Archives. Below is a time line for David Kinkead, son of John Kinkead of Oxford Township, later of Drumore and Bart Township, Lancaster County, PA.  I thought for a short while that David Kinkead in Cumberland Township, Greene County, PA was the son of Samuel Kinkead of Fawn Township, but there are children in the family older than 5 years old and David, son of Samuel Kinkead of Fawn Township was still single in 1805. Andrew Kincaid, son of David Kinkead was born in Penn. in 1801/02 and his father was born in Penn. as Andrew stated in the 1880 Census as did his brother Secrist stated in the 1880 census.  The other Kincaids in Greene County, PA are the sons of Robert Kinkead and Susannah Powell.  Samuel went to Monroe County, OH as did David Kinkead they are both in Greene County in 1810 and then in Monroe County, OH in 1820.  Robert Kinkead, Samuel's brother died in 1815.  As for James Kinkead who married Nancy Taylor I believe he is connected to John Kinkead later of Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, PA, the John Kinkead Jr. formerly of Lancaster County, PA. 1770 David Kinkead [000012] born to John Kinkead [000012] & wife Elizabeth McCall in Londonderry                     Township,  Chester County, PA. Extrapolation 1785 John Kinkaid, [000012] Oxford Township, Chester County, PA & his wife, Elizabeth sold to Abraham             Cooper 145  acres for 775 pounds on August 23, 1785, being a tract of land Samuel McCall and his             wife, Sarah of Fawn Township, York County, PA purchased on March 23, 1763, called William Penn’s         Manor in Oxford Township, Chester County, PA. 3. There were a James and a David Dunseath on the same census page as Andrew Kincaid of Westmoreland County, PA in the 1790 census. I assume this was the same David Dunseath who bought the land in Sherman's Creek from Thomas Kincaid, son of John of Carlisle? Did the county boundary lines change, or did both Andrew Kincaid and David Dunseath move to Westmoreland County? Also, I read the pension files of John Kincaid/Anna Gregory at www.footnote.com. Anna Gregory Kincaid named her children, and they included the Joseph R. Kincaid whose descendant might be (?) the one who gave the DNA sample. 3. There could also be a complete break in family relations as a result of bad feelings or illegal acts that could cause some members of the family to disown the rest of the family and change their name to make a complete break and start anew.  I know a young woman who did just that and changed her first name and last name, in other words bury her past as best she could and start over with her children in a new location. 1. Re: [KINCAID] Kincaids of Lancaster County, PA
    2. I almost hate to bring this up.....again.....because I'll be sorry to open up this can of worms considering how little time I have for this now. But these Kincaids, Samuel, John, Michael, al seem to be the ones in closest proximity to the Clingans in my branch. Of course there are some in my branch convinced that the Thomas married to Hannah Clingan is the same as the son of the Shopkeeper---but a DNA sample has suggested otherwise. Yet the mystery remains that the tested DNA for Thomas/Hannah Clingan is in Group C, while these others, and now apparently, the Shopkeeper's family is group A. Now niether line has been vested, and I'm fairly sure that the testee for the Shopkeeper will not present material for this. Other than getting real birth certificates, I see little to question about his line (John/Anna Gregory of SC). On the other hand, Bill, the testee for my line, his family has an interesting story, and one that I think bears a much closer look. Because the circumstantial evidence that my Thomas was of the Shopkeeper of Carlisle is strong. There is another scenario that I have suggested. That Edward Clingan and his sister Hannah travelled to tennessee BEFORE meeting Thomas Kincaid. That my Thomas came to America shortly after the War--i.e. after a lot of the records we look at--and met the Clingans in Tennessee or more appropriately, that part which was North Carolina. There are flaws in the above scenario which I won't take the time to point out. But the point is that the connection that my line clings to, with the Clingans of Lancaster and York County can't be reconciled with what we know about the Kincaids of that area UNLESS somebody's DNA is wrong. I now believe that this John Kinkead is the brother of Samuel Kinkead of Fawn Township, York County, PA, who died in 1779.  Samuel mentioned his property on Petters Creek and that is where John Kinkead ends up. And his sister Mary Kinkead is the Mary Kinkead of Bedford County, PA.  He is therefore connected to Michael Kinkead of Hamilton Bann's Township, York County, PA.  And is therefore connected to the Kincaids of Sadsbury and West Caln Townships, Chester County, PA.  It is strange that a James Kincaid & a John Kincaid are taxed in Smith Township, Washington County, PA both before and after the 1790 Census, but they are no where to be found in the Washington County, PA ennumeration; I went through it column by column and they are not there.  You can follow John Kinkead Jr. by searching on [000003] Be advised I tried the plain text deal.  We'll see how it looks. 1. [KINCAID] Non Paternity events list
    2. Don W. Kincaid
    3. We took the below instances of non paternity events from DNA Kin website and added a few more below their info: Non Paternity The study of DNA for genealogical purposes often leads researchers to non paternity events. A non paternity event is an event where a person is given a surname that differs from his historical surname. Non Paternity Events 1. An illegitimate male child to a single woman takes her surname. 2. An illegitimate male child to a married woman takes the husband's surname, even though the husband is not the father. 3. Male members of a family take the name of a female member. 4. Children adopt a step-parent's name. 5. A child is adopted into a completely unrelated family and takes their name. If a non paternity event has occurred in the past, the genealogist must work back through the public records to determine what happened. A DNA test that reveals there was a non paternity event cannot tell you when or what that event was. Unfortunately, the event could be close in time, or it could be in distant years before records are available. Also, it could be an unrecorded event in a recent time period, like an unrecorded adoption or a common-law marriage. My additions: 6. children who have lost their mother and are farmed out to other families wind up taking their name. One of my 1st cousins whose mother died when he was around 1 year old lived with a family and enrolled in school using their surname, finally discovering at age 12 that he was not their son. 7. One other instance which might apply to a lot of black Kincaid's is freed slaves taking the surname of their master or someone they knew and respected. 8. Back in the days when it first became popular to have a surname, many people likely chose a name they liked and if 2 unrelated families happen to choose the same surname, their DNA would not match 9. A few people have successfully petitioned a court to have their names changed to a surname of their choosing and thus would not match DNA with most of that surname. Are there more non paternity events not listed above? DNA is a very exact science according to everything I read. Don W.

    1. [KINCAID] John Kincaid/Anna Gregory pension files letter to Robert M. Kincaid, Gastonia, N.C.
    2. Don W. Kincaid
    3. For those interested here is what I copied about John Kincaid's Rev. War Pension. We have reproduced below a letter written by the Commissioner (assume the National Archives) to Robert M. Kincaid, 509 South St., Gastonia, N. C. on November 27, 1923 Madam: (Copyist does not know why it is addressed Madam) I have to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War Pension claim W. 12029 it appears that John Kincaid was born August 9, 1749 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1772 he moved to York County, South Carolina where he enlisted and served as a private, Lieutenant and Captain in the South Caroline Troops at various times between 1777 and 1781 amounting to twenty-three months, under Major Wallis, Colonels Neal, Watson, Bratton, Graham and Campbell and General Sumpter and was in the battles of Rocky Mount and Kings Mountain. He was allowed pension on his application executed November 4, 1832 while a resident of Lincoln County, North Carolina. He died August 10, 1836 or 1837. Soldier married September 10, 1817 in York District, South Carolina, Anna Gregory born May 25, 1793 and who was allowed pension on her application executed April 1, 1853 while a resident of Chester District, South Carolina. She died September 17, 1868. Their children were: Margaret Elizabeth Dods born December 7 1818, married James W. Henderson. John Adams………………….. “ February 22, 1821. Susanna Martha..………….. “ February 31, 1833, married …….Johnston. (Date has to be a mistake) William Thomson………… “ December 24, 1824. Joseph Robert………………. “ August 31, 1838. The above children all survived their mother excepting John Adams. Respectfully, Commissioner DWK note: the above letter contains the essential info from John’s pension application. Identical info on John Kincaid was later sent to Mrs. John F. Brisbin who had inquired about him. ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Van Hout To: Kincaid@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2008 6:30 PM Subject: Re: [KINCAID] Kincaids of Lancaster County, PA There were a James and a David Dunseath on the same census page as Andrew Kincaid of Westmoreland County, PA in the 1790 census. 1. Re: [KINCAID] John Kinkead
    2. Mary Kinkead
    3. How my husband's family fits - I'm not sure. This is what I know: My husband - John Robert Kinkead - born in Martinsburg, WV on 5/27/1947 His father - John Blue Kinkead - born in Springfield, WV on 9/24/1912 - died Hedgesville, WV - died 10/4/1975 in Martinsburg, WV His father - John Andrew Kinkead - born in Glenboig in the Landward of New Monkland in County Lanark Scotland 4/24/1882 (the surname on the birth record was spelled Kinked). he died April 25, 1940 in Hedgesville, WV and is buried in Springfield, WV. He came to the United State when he was 5 and lived in the Pittsburgh, PA area before moving to Springfield WV then to Hedgesville, WV His father - Hugh Kinkaid (the spelling as stated on his death certificated) born 5/25, 1833 in Ireland or Scotland (of this I am not sure). He died 6/22/1922 in Springfield and is buried there. He was married to a Martha Adams or Adamson on December 23, 1870 in Banbrige, Ireland . He came to the USA somewhere between 1882 and1887 to work as a fireman who coke ovens for either making steel or brick. When the depression hit he moved to Springfield WV to farm. His father is John Kinkaid born in Scotland but date is not known nor is any other information known. This is about all I know. I know that John Andrew had two brothers: Hugh(died young and is buried in Springfield) and James who was either a teacher or a lawyer and stayed in the Washington PA area; Martha was too ill to travel when the family left Pa to come to WV so she stayed there was James and some other family friends. She is buried there an I have not been able to find a record of her death or where she is buried. John Andrew also had two sisters Maggie and Annie. Annie married a Field from Springfield and lived there the rest of her life. If anyone has any information to share I would greatly appredicate it. Or if you have any question I can clarify for you please email me.
