The last of the upgrade to 67 markers has been returned for 119921. He matches the Apparent Ancestral Values for Group A Kincaids at all but two markers. He has the 12 at marker 26 (DYS 460) which places him in set 1b and what appears to be a late mutation (no one else has it) to 15 from the AAV 16 at marker 13 (DYS 458). Charles believes he is a descendent of John of Sadsbury and is working on a vetting post. I noticed that there were several typos in the results section for this line on the last chart I sent to Alice so will be sending an updated chart to Alice soon. As usual if she is available she updates the chart almost immediately, however, there may be a delay if she is away from her computor. Alice is doing a tremendous service for the Kincaid project by hosting the chart. Thank you. Sue Liedtke

Dear Kincaid listers, Here is a short biography of William Irvine, Dr. & General. William Irvine was born of Scots-Irish parents in Fermanaugh, Ireland on November 3, 1741. He attended Trinity College in Dublin and afterwards studied medicine. He became a Royal Navy surgeon and served at sea in the Seven Years' War. He settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1764 to practice medicine. When the Revolutionary War broke out he raised the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment and participated in the invasion of Canada where he was captured at Three Rivers. He was exchanged in 1778 and fought at the Battle of Monmouth. Promoted to Brigadier General, he was given command of the western frontier area and was headquartered at Fort Pitt where he served until the end of the war. After the establishment of the new government, Irvine served in various posts, many involving the distribution of land, and he attended the Continental Congress in 1787. He later represented Cumberland County in the U.S. Congress and commanded Pennsylvania troops in the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. His final post was as superintendent of military stores in Philadelphia. Irvine was one of the original nine trustees to whom the deed for the building of a school in Carlisle had been entrusted. When the Dickinson College charter was passed in the Legislature, six of the nine became trustees of the College. Irvine was one of these and he served until his death. During his early days in Carlisle, he married Anne Callender. He died in Philadelphia on July 29, 1804. From the Encyclopedia Dickinsonia Sincerely Norman Kincaide

Deanne, I hope you will be able to get your formal vetting post to the list soon. I will be happy to look over the final draft before you post it. Although I am pretty darn sure that you do have the correct lineage, this is such an important line that everyone needs a chance to look over the details, ask questions and are convinced of its veracity before I mark it as vetted to David/Winifred. This week I have limited genealogy time. I need to take advantage of my brother's visit to address dry rot problems in my tiny 1922 cottage. Newport may be amazing but it is on the Oregon coast where cars and houses rust and rot without constant care. As promised the abstract of Hugh's marriage is as follows: On 23 December 1870, Hugh Kinkaid, a full age bachelor weaver of Colenacran; son of Hugh Kinkaid, weaver, was married to Martha Adams, a full age spinster of Colenacran, daughter of Hugh Adams, labourer, at the Scarva St. Presbyterian Church in Banbridge, Seapatrick Parish, County Down, according to the Forms and Discipline of the Presbyterian Church by licence by Robert Andrews. Matha gave her mark. The witnesses were James Jardine and John Andrews [Ireland. Civil Registrations of Marriages. Banbridge District, 1870, vol. 16, p. 265, no. 80; LDS film no. 101568]. The townland of Coolnacran is in Aghaderg Parish, County Down. Hugh Kincaid appears in the Griffiths Valuation (1864) in Aghderg Parish, Coolnacran Townland, Banbridge Union, at map reference 22 d as a tenant of John J. Whyte for a house & small garden valued at £1. The question remains as to whether this is Hugh the son (who married Martha Adams) or his father. We have the following marriage record to expand the family: On 15 May 1866, Hugh Kinkaid, a 50 year old widower labourer of Aghaderg; son of Andrew Kinkaid, farmer, was married to Sarah Jane Lackey, a 33 year old spinster weaver of Belfast, daughter of James Lackey, farmer, at St. Anne's Parish Church in Belfast Parish, County Antrim, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland by licence by E. H. Hoare. Sarah Jane gave her mark. The witnesses were Richard Lackey and Ellen Lackey [Ireland. Civil Registrations of Marriages. Banbridge District, 1866, vol. 6, p. 316, no. 73; LDS film no. 101492]. This would appear to be Hugh the father. Although the marriage is in County Antrim it appears that this Hugh was of Aghaderg Parish, County Down. The reason being is that there are abstracts, from Irish Civil Registration records, for the following Kincaids in Aghaderg Parish, County Down (this is based on Internet sources): - Hugh Kinkead and Sarah Jane Leckey/Lackey of Loughbrickland townland, Aghaderg Parish, County Down were the parents of Mary Ann Kinkead (b. 5 Feb 1868) and James Kinkead (b. 19 Jun 1870). - Hugh Kincade and Martha Adamson of Loughbrickland townland, Aghaderg Parish, County Down were the parents of Hugh Kincade (b. 28 Oct 1871). Thus, both were of the same townland. Hugh, the widower, who married Sarah Jane Lackey was old enough to be the father of Hugh who married Martha Adams. It seems quite likely that they are father and son and that Hugh (m. Marth Adams) was the grandson of an Andrew Kincaid. The family would seem to have been in the place for a while. I have the following Kincaid marriage records: - On 22 February 1853, a Margaret Kincaid of Colenacrane, Aghaderg Parish married John McGivern in Banbridge. She was noted as the 22 year old daughter of Andrew Kincaid, farmer. - On 16 June 1854, an Esther Kinkade married a George Riddles, a widower. She was noted as being from Colenacran and was a full age daughter of Andrew Kinkade, farmer. - On 15 September 1854, a George Kinkade married Anne Jane Minnis at Scarva St. Presbyterian Church, Banbridge. He was noted as the son of Andrew Kinkade, farmer and was from Gilford townland, Tullylish Parish, County Down. - On 11 November 1857, Thomas Kinkead, a full age son of Hugh Kinkead, weaver, of Coolnacran (Loughbrickland) married Rebecca Livingston in Tullylish Parish, County Down. - On 28 April 1860, Andrew Kinkade, a full age bachelor son of Hugh Kinkade, labourer, of Kolnacran married Mary Thomson at Ballydown, Seapatrick Parish, County Down. These should give you some leads for further research. I note the following site of interest to you: http://www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com/html/loughbrickland1.htm I hope this helps. Best wishes! Norman doesn't it depend on which tax list? The property tax list would be based on property owned in the area but the poll tax list is based on actual presence in the area and works much like a census. I seem to remember seeing a few pages from a book about lost records of PA dealing with records in VA which pertain to the disputed area. I can't find them now but do seem to remember that there was a John Kincaid who was to see that an orphan was given some type of education. I forgot to add that Ohio Co., W. Va., from which Brooke Co was formed in 1796, was itself formed from Augusta County VA in 1776. The northern part of Ohio Co. (south of Brooke Co.) also borders Washington Co. PA on the west of Washington Co. http://www.mywestvirginiagenealogy.com/wv_county/oh.htm I also now remember that there was an early county in VA. (1776) named Yohogania, which overlapped the PA border (in what is now Washington Co. PA), and was discontinued in 1786 as the PA border issue was resolved. There were records recorded in Yohogania that mentioned a John Kincaid, and maybe a James. I don't know where those records ended up. The book I found in the Newberry library was about Yohogania. I think this has obvious implications for western PA research. <<"It is strange that a James Kincaid & a John Kincaid are taxed in Smith Township, Washington County, PA both before and after the 1790 Census, but they are no where to be found in the Washington County, PA ennumeration; I went through it column by column and they are not there.">> Norman, Most people forget, or maybe don't know, that Brooke County W. Va, which borders Washington County PA on the west, was disputed over between both PA and VA after the Revolutionary war. Both states granted settlers land there. Virginia finally won out and Brooke County was formed from Ohio Co. VA, in 1796, and later became part of W. Virginia. However, there were certainly settlers from western PA there in the 1790s. http://www.mywestvirginiagenealogy.com/wv_county/bro.htm#eh There was a major Kincaid family in Brooke County, using the spelling of Kinkade. This family group is there from the 1790s I think, and according to the family tradition, the patriarch is a John Kinkade/Jane from County Down, Ireland. I've never seen much research for this family line, and I've always wondered if they connect to PA or VA Kincaid lines, rather than coming straight from Ireland. There were 1780s and 1790s records from this area recorded in sometimes VA counties, and sometimes PA, and also there may have been records recorded that didn't get into either state, as there was a temporary arrangement, which I can no longer remember. There was a book I found at the Newberry library once that described the early settlement of this area, but which I can't remember. I do remember though seeing records for a John and maybe a James as well. I have an 1812 record for John's son James BRK 11/ /1812 WV-158( ) James Kincaid will (wife Nancy) is settled. Son John, daughters Ellinor, Jane, Maryann, Lornann, other children. NOTE: This James is descended from a John Kinkade (wife Jane) who came over from County Down, Ireland, and settled in Brooke County, now W. Va. Brooke County was formed from Ohio County in 1797. See Assortment of Kincaid Papers Vol 1, pages 49-51 for the history of this family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norman Kincaide" <norman.kincaide@yahoo.com> To: <kincaid@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 19, 2008 10:54 AM Subject: Re: [KINCAID] John Kinkead, Jr. formerly of Lancaster County, PA > Norman Kincaide wrote: > "It is strange that a James Kincaid & a John > Kincaid are taxed in Smith Township, Washington County, PA both before and > after the 1790 Census, but they are no where to be found in the Washington > County, PA ennumeration; I went through it column by column and they are > not there." > Sometimes I forget the difference between the tax list and a census > ennumeration. Norman Kincaide wrote: "It is strange that a James Kincaid & a John Kincaid are taxed in Smith Township, Washington County, PA both before and after the 1790 Census, but they are no where to be found in the Washington County, PA ennumeration; I went through it column by column and they are not there." Sometimes I forget the difference between the tax list and a census ennumeration. The tax list is about taxes and property and individuals being taxed (single men). The census is about households, heads of households and individuals. The reason James & John Kincaid are on the tax list for Washington County, and not on the Census for Washington County is because they are being taxed for property in Washington County but that is not their household, which is probably in Allegheny County, that part most recently taken from Washington County, PA. Sometimes I forget. First is John Kinkead, Jr. formerly of Lancaster County, PA, the first citation to whom follows. I now believe that this John Kinkead is the brother of Samuel Kinkead of Fawn Township, York County, PA, who died in 1779. Samuel mentioned his property on Petters Creek and that is where John Kinkead ends up. And his sister Mary Kinkead is the Mary Kinkead of Bedford County, PA. He is therefore connected to Michael Kinkead of Hamilton Bann's Township, York County, PA. And is therefore connected to the Kincaids of Sadsbury and West Caln Townships, Chester County, PA. It is strange that a James Kincaid & a John Kincaid are taxed in Smith Township, Washington County, PA both before and after the 1790 Census, but they are no where to be found in the Washington County, PA ennumeration; I went through it column by column and they are not there. You can follow John Kinkead Jr. by searching on [000003] Be advised I tried the plain text deal. We'll see how it looks. Sincerely Norman Kincaide 1769 John Kinkead, [000003] Jr., formerly of Lancaster County, PA, applied for a warrant to take up 300 acres in Washington County, PA (Cumberland County, PA in 1769) of new purchase lands, now in Allegheny County, PA, dated, June 27, 1769, application #3562, New Purchase, warrant #25, patentee, John Douglas, Nov. 10, 1784, name of tract, Bucks Forest. Last Will & Testament of Samuel Kinkead, proved April 3, 1779, Inventory filed, May 12, 1779 In the name of God, Amen, I Samuel Kinkaid [000004]being in perfect health of body and of sound memory, blessed be God this twenty sixth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six, make and publish this my last will and testament. In manner following that is to say first, I give to my brother John, [000004] fifty acres of any land where it may not hurt the place but most convenient for both places. Next, I give to my sister Mary [000004] one hundred acres of any place. Next I give to my cousin Samuel Kinkaid, [000004] son to Michael Kinkaid, [000004] one hundred acres of my land near Pittsburgh on Petters Creek. Next I give to my cousin Michael Kinkaid [000004] all my chattels and goods he has now in his possesion. And I do make and ordain my cousin Michael Kinkaid [000004] to be my whole executor of this my last will and testament in trust for the intention and purpose in this my will contained and in witness where of I the said Samuel Kinkaid [000004] have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal the day and year above mentioned. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of us. Samuel Kinkaid [000004] Hugh Artens John Shultz York County Before me Archibald McClean, Register for the Probate of Will and granting letters of administration in and for the County of York in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania personally came Hugh Artens and John Shultz the two subscribing witnesses to the foregoing instrument of writing and on their solemn oaths in the common form of law do severally and respectively testify that they were personally present at the time when the before named Samuel Kinkead [000004]executed the before written instrument of writing, but do not particularly recollect his signing or sealing or publishing the same. But he, the said Samuel Kinkead being then engaged as a soldier in the Continental Service, they effectively understood it to be his last will and testament, which he then made before he would march. That the names Hugh Artens and John Shultz are respectively of the said deponents own hand writing and that they respectively are fully assured that they would not have signed their names there to as witnesses unless they had seen the same signed, sealed and published, the further that the said Samuel Kinkead [000004] was at that time of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge and belief, and farther that they did sign their names there to in his presence and also in the presence of each other. I recently reread the article on Wikipedia that Peter A. Kincaid contributed and in doing so I see a likely connection between some Kinkeads/Kincaids and Patrick Kincaid of Leith. Here is a quote from the article: "Patrick Kincaid of Leith, was Master Brewer to King James V in the 1530s and 1540s.[11" ;-) Seriously, if you haven't read this great article, it is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Kincaid

I have a copy of Hugh's marriage record. He married Martha Adams on 23 December 1870. His father's name was given as Hugh Kinkaid, weaver. I will abstract this for you and email it to you in a few days. I'd do it sooner but we lost one of our Kincaids here (my father's sister) so I am side tracked with events relating to this. Best wishes! Peter P.S. If you have a male Kincaid in your family willing to participate in the DNA project I suspect many of us would be thrilled. We are always looking for lines with solid links to a place in the Old World.
I got to stick to the more appropriate term here as everyone has a paternity contrary to what non paternity implies. I would add the case where a someone inherits an estate or title and assumes the other person's surname in honor thereof or as part of an entail. We have such a classic case with our own Clan Chief. She is quite far removed from having direct male Kincaid DNA but she sometimes now is called Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid and has come to represent all Kincaids who aspire to be part of a new global Kincaid Clan. If things went as they were supposed to her children would from hence forth be called Kincaids. Best wishes! Peter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don W.
