North Carolina requires an entry at this link. The video by the state treasurer who wants you to think of this as a gift from him (he sounds slimier than John Edwards). Dick, Good detective work! I visited with our local post office about the dead letter in 1700's and they said it would be worth a try. Dear Kincaid listers, I have been looking into the Kinkades of the Ben Dixon Book, namely David Kinkade who married Rebecca Osborn and David's son Andrew. It would appear that there was a genuine non-paternity event (I don't really like that term either, since paternity occured) or nonmarriage or illegitimate birth, since Edward was born (1857) before Andrew Kinkade married Harriet Scott (1865) Edward could not be attributed to Andrew and Harriet and it appears clear from Ben Dixon's record that Andrew Kinkade who married Harriet Scott was the son of Andrew Kinkade and Ann Tingley and not Samuel Kincaid from the posting in 1997 (he is most likely the son of Robert Kincaid & Susannah Powell). This information about the Kinkeads of Albemarle County appears to be from the following book: Albemarle County History by Reverend Edgar Woods, ISBN # 1-933268-51-4: Published 1901 by Michie Company Printers Charlottesville Va 1746: Albemarle County History pg 245,247: The Kinkeads were early settlers in the western part of the County. As far as can be made out, there were 3 brothers of the Name, David Kinkead, Joseph Kinkead, and James Kinkead. In 1746 David Kinkead patented nearly 800 acres on the North Fork of Rockfish River and the next year 400 acres more on Stockton's Creek. By entry and purchase together the family connection became the owners of not far from 3,000 acres in that vicinity. Joseph Kinkead, James Kinkead and John Kinkead probably the sons of Joseph Kinkead appear as subscribers to the call of Reverend Samuel Black in 1747. The home of Joseph Kinkead and James Kinkead were situated about half mile west of Immanuel Church, on the place now owned by Reverend Dabney Davis. An old graveyard a few hundred yards south of Mr. Davis's house is still known in the neighborhood as the Kinkead burying ground. A broken down wall and a few rough stones are all that mark the spot. James Kinkead died in 1762 leaving 3 sons: Thomas Kinkead, John Kinkead and James Kinkead, and probably 2 more, Matthew Kinkead and Andrew Kinkead, and a daughter the wife of Ninian Clyde. Joseph Kinkead died in 1774, his children were Jean Kinkead wife of Hugh Alexander, John Kinkead and Ruth Kinked the wife of Andrew Grier. Hugh Alexander had a mill which at on time was a noted center in that section, roads were made to it from ever Quarter. It was built on Stockton's Creek, not far from the foot of Hill west of Hillsboro. In subsequent years it was known as Hayes's and still later as Humphrey's Mill. It is supposed Andrew Grier was one of the early merchants of that vicinity. He was the owner of nearly 600 acres adjoining Yellow Mountain, which likely in liquidation of his debts, he conveyed in 1766 to Jeremiah Parker and Richard Warde merchants of Philadelphia. In course of years part of this land passed in the hands of Jon Lob Ban Jr. and part into the hands of Dr. Peter B. Bowen. A grandson of Joseph Kinkead married a daughter of Adam Dean another early settler on Stockton's Creek and in Dec 1898 there died in Greenbrier County. Adam Dean Kinkead doubtless their son at the age of 92. All of the kindred bearing the name, seem to have removed from this county before the close of the last century. Its latest appearance on the records occurs in 1784, when Jean Kinkead the widow of James Kinkead sold to Abner Wood a parcel of land in what is known as the Piper and PATRICK neighborhood. She was at that time a resident of Rockbridge Co. In the Black call the name Kinkead is spelled Kincaid ******************** Here is a record for William/Eleanor Kinkead and the Alexander family: On 28th of August 1789, William Kinkead and Elinor, his wife of the county of Augusta conveyed to William Alexander, of the city of Richmond, in consideration of 1,000 pounds, 350 acres of land on the Calf Pasture River, etc. When they determined to come to Kentucky, they sold it to Mr. William Alexander, the father of Sir William Alexander, who was later on (from 1826-31) Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer Court in England. --Some Virginia Families, by MCILHANY. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~krummhorn/chapman.htm Barb Van Hout ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don W. Margie, while the 25 marker test won't give us the answers to the mutations in question, it is a start that could be upgraded at a later time. To upgrade one needs only to make a request and send the payment, no more tests are needed. Getting the DNA in the 1st place is the hard part. If you do get a volunteer you might want to impose on him further for documentation that can be used to vet the line. Having the DNA tested gives you the raw information. Being able to unquestionably link the results to an early ancestor gives them genealogical value both to the line and to the group/set the donor is placed in. You might also consider preparing a vetting post for 15550. If you decide to do this, I would be happy to help with format and organization. Dennis, Since you have so many records on David Kinkead from Spotsylvania, Goochland and Orange Counties, I wonder if you might have any for James and Joseph Kinkead since Wood's History of Albemarle County states that David, James and Joseph are brothers? Thanks for all you contribute to the Kincaid list! Don W. Between June 1734 and 1743 in Spottsylvania, Goochland and Orange counties it is spelled Kinkead 46 times to 2 as Kinkade, and 4 spellings of Kindred. The spelling may be more related to which clerk recorded the records.
Thank you, Margie and Meredith. Illinois marriage records show that it was Harriet Bullard, not Harriet Stewart, who married Lorenzo Kinkade in 1844 in Richland County, IL. KINKADE, LORENZO D BULLARD, HARRIET 1844-10-17 001/ RICHLAND I found a biography (below) of Hiram Bird Kinkade, son of Lorenzo/Harriet, and brother of James Allen Kinkade. Hiram and James Kinkade's grandfather George married Sarah/Sally Traner/Trainer in Sept, 1816 in Hardin County, KY. It was George's older brother Robert Kinkade, Jr. who married Elizabeth Traner in 1815 in Hardin County. Sarah and Elizabeth Traner were daughters of a William Traner/Trainer from Virginia. I don't have any records for Robert/Mary Kinkade's family in Virginia, or in Lynchburg, VA as has been written elsewhere. They were married in Dec., 1784 in Washington County, PA by Rev. Matthew Henderson. At the time of George W. Kinkade's (Sarah Traner) birth, it appears that his parents were in Kentucky. First tax list of Shelby County, KY (1792-1795) Robt Kinkead, 156 A. Kinkade, who follows farming near Hamilton, was born in St. Albans township, Hancock county, on the 3d of February, 1858, and attended the district schools, while spending his boy- hood days under the parental roof. His paternal grandparents were George W. and Elizabeth (Trainer) Kinkade, both of whom were natives of Virginia. They became early settlers of Hancock county, but in the meantime had resided in Hardin county, Kentucky, where occurred the birth of Lorenzo D. Kinkade, father of our subject. He married Miss Harriet Stewart, whd was born in Wabash county, Indiana, a daughter of Cornelius and Sarah (Bullard) Stewart, who were like- wise pioneer residents of this county. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Kinkade was celebrated at the residence of his wife's father about 1840 and they afterward removed to St. Clair county, Illinois, and subsequently lived in Adams county, Illinois, for a time. At a later date they went to Missouri, taking up their abode near Kirksville and in 1856 they came to Hancock county, Mr. Kink- ade purchasing forty acres of unimproved timber land. He cleared and cultivated the tract, making many modern improve- ments upon it. and there resided until 1872, when he sold that place to his son. He afterward lived with his children up to the time of his death, which occurred January 16, 1879, when he was fifty-five years of age. His widow still survives and makes her home with her children in this county, and she is honored by all who know her. Hiram B. Kinkade was the seventh in order of birth in a family of six sons and five daughters. He was reared upon the old home farm and resided with his parents until his father's death, after which his mother lived with him until he reached the age of twenty-seven years. He began his business career upon rented farms in this locality and in 1896 he pur- chased eight acres of land in the Oak- wood addition to Hamilton. Dear Sue, Thanks for the feedback! I'll check the archives and if I have additional questions I'll be sure to ask. My understanding is that David (Martha Sproul's) grand daughter, Emily (William's), married David Kilgore of Greenburgh on 11 Apr 1845. They lived in Greensburgh. Another grand daughter of David, Elizabeth (Robert's), married James Kirker, and also lived in that area. Elizabeth died about 1825, soon after her son Robert Maxwell Kirker was born, and Robert was raised by his Kinkead grandmother. Welcome to the list Nancy. The family of John Kincaid and Elizabeth Gilespie have been much discussed on list. You might want to visit the archives to bring you up to speed. We often list males with their spouses in this manner John/Elizabeth Gilespie so try that criterea for a search when looking for information. We are pretty darn sure that John/Elizabeth is the son of Thomas/Hannah Tincher Kincaid. There are several lines from John/Elizabeth represented in the Kincaid DNA project. The contacts are presently working on a post to the list proving the connection. One of the proofs is a court document showing that John, son of Thomas/Hannah lived in Nicholas Co. which is where the Gauley River land was located. Thomas was b c1742 d 1819 Greenbrier Co. VA. We first meet up with him in 1765 Albemarle Co. VA buying land which he and Hannah sell in 1771. He is identified on the deeds as son of a John Kincaid. Hannah is the daughter of Samuel/Margaret Campbell Tincher. Samuel and George Campbell held land in Albemarle Co. and Augusta Co. during the same time period. The land Thomas/Hannah held in Albemarle Co. is located very close to the Amhearst Co. border (now Nelson Co/Albemarle Co. border). You will find much detailed information on Thomas/Hannah in the archives. John/Ann Graham Kincaid is possibly a brother to Thomas/Hannah. This is pure speculation based on the closeness of the 2 families. Also controversial is a father for John and Thomas. One possibility is John/Elizabeth the Weaver (again check the archives) who bought land in Augusta Co. VA in 1754 and is described as "of Albemarle Co." in 1766. This hypothesis is based on the Albemarle Co. reference, the knowledge that Thomas/Hannah's father was named John, the sale of land by John the Weaver to John/Anne, and the use of the name Matthew in the families of John/Elizabeth the Weaver, John/Anne Graham and Thomas/Hannah Tincher. Matthew is not a common Kincaid name and during this time period appears only in these families.
