I think we decided that this John in Mason Co. was John/Elizabeth Logan, son of David/Winnifred. John and Elizabeth of Clark Co. KY sold 2500a in Mason Co. on the waters of Kennicanick on 4/29/1802. There was also a John Kinkaid and Mary of Mason Co. who sold land on Bull Creek on 1/27/1804 but If I remember correctly the boundaries indicate the Kennicanick land as being part of the 5,000a grant. Barbara, Thanks for posting the Ky land patent website. Very enjoyable finding info on my kin! Did you by chance check on the James Kincaid/William Woods parcel? William Wood married James's & my ancestor David Greer Kincaid's sister Ruth. The description says the 1,800 acres lays about 3 or 4 miles below the mouth of Richland Creek on Cumberland River but since Lincoln County was still a large county, I am not sure where their land was located. I don't find Richland Creek on my maps however there is a Richland Creek Road in present day Knox County, KY a few miles east of the town of Gray but I don't see the Cumberland River nearby so still in the dark on the location. When in Madison and Mercer Counties, KY, we copied lots of land documents for James Kincaid but found few deeds where he sold the land. Perhaps the title did not turn out on some of them? We found the same for John Kincaid in same area. My curiosity is very high on the John Kinkaid who paid 8,000 pounds for 5,000 acres to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1782 on Treasury Warrant No. 12157. Great opportunity to participate in the Kincaid's of all Spellings DNA Project is outlined in this email from Family Tree DNA. Their new lab is sure saving lots of time and allows them to offer this large price savings so if you or a kinsman has been thinking of participating, now is a good time! Remember that several in a family can go together to pay the costs for one family member to participate and only one from a family is needed. The 37 marker test is only $119! If you want to look over the Kincaid DNA Results chart Sue does, there will be a link at the bottom of this email. Please remember the expiration date of this special is AUGUST 31! For that reason, our shipping cost will increase by $2, effective immediately. We appreciate your understanding. As always, thank you for your continued support! Family Tree DNA
I tried to send this reply before, I don't know where it got hung up. But I am sending it again. This act was to fulfill the Pennyslvania quota for the Federal Army not including those who are serving for the duration of the war or for three years. So it appears that this is 2700 additional soldiers for the Federal Army. There were Pennsylvania Continental Line troops before 1781 serving for varying lengths of time. Some enlisted for the war or three years, some were enlisted for 7 months in 1780 and it appears that such a short enlistment didn't serve the purposes of the Federal Army. These 18 month enlistments served more to secure the western frontier since the seige of Yorktown in Virginia which ended on Oct. 17, 1781 ended most military operations in Virginia and the coastal states. So securing the frontier of Pennsylvania at Fort Pitt was viewed as a necessity since Indian allies to the British were still causing trouble for frontier settlements in 1781. Sincerely Norman Kincaide

Yes, but for some people it would be prudent to note that there's a difference between "line" units and militia. I thought PA had line troops before 1781 so I wonder if the first act was to raised an additional 2700 men. The son of Samuel Kincaid m. Sarah Reed was not born until 1804 in Adams Co., OH., so it wasn't that Samuel. In 1793 and 1795, the Samuel Kincaid who m. Sarah Reed was living in St. Clair Township, Allegheny Co., PA. I have a note that says Baldwin Twp. was created in 1844 from Upper and Lower St. Clair, Jefferson & Mifflin Twps. Baldwin Twp. is just south of Pittsburgh. Butler County is north of Pittsburgh, so it isn't likely to be the Samuel Kincaid who m. Sarah Reed either. My sister, Chris Kraft, has the Samuel Kincaid who m. Elizabeth Wilson as moving from Fayette Co., PA (where he was in 1790) to Hardin Co., KY. (where he was in 1795). I don't know who your Samuel Kincade, Jr. is. "The Virginia patents tell us that the Andrew Kincaid who served with Capt. Lewis was an assignee of a John Kincaid." Correction to the above statement: It was John Kinkead who served with Capt. Lewis in 1763 who gave this land to Andrew Kincaid. The deed suggest that Andrew was an heir of John Kinkead. Dear Kincaid-listers, I was going through the warrants and surveys for Butler County, PA trying to find surveys in Donegal Township that might be adjacent to a Kincaid and this is what I found. This survey was orginally in Allegheny County, later in Butler County. Who is this Samuel Kincade junior to? Is he the son of Samuel Kincaid married to Sarah Reed who died at the seige of Fort Meigs? Or the son of Samuel Kincaid who married Elizabeth Wilson? Subsequently, this Samuel Kincaid died in Butler County, PA in 1840 leaving three son: John, James, and Robert. This Samuel is of particular interest to Group C Kincaids if he is the son of either of the above Samuel Kincaids. This land is also connected to the Craig family and it could be that the John Kincaid, of Butler County who sold his donation land Isaac Craig could be the brother of this Samuel Kincade, Jr. Sincerely Norman Kincaide 1794 Samuel Kincade, Jr. Surveyed the 18 day of September 1794 for Jonathan Craig, 401 acres of land with the allowance of six per cent &c by virtue of his improvement began the 18 day of Sept. 1794 situate in District No. 8 N.W. of the Allegheny River on the waters of the West Branch of Buffaloe Creek. Stephen Gapen, D.S. To Daniel Brodhead, Esqr. Surveyor General. Adjacent landowners: William Craig, Samuel Kincade, Jr., Peter Condon, improved land.. Pennsylvania State Archives, RG-17, Records of the Land Office, COPIED SURVEYS, 1681-1912C-177, p. 90.
The Kentucky Secretary of State website has added images of more very early land patents. You can choose to read the Virginia land patents or the old Kentucky land patents. Then search for names by scrolling down the scanned patents. >From reading some of Kincaid records, I found an Andrew associated with William Kinkead in Fayette County, Eagle Creek, witness was a ? Poage, in the Kentucky land records. This was probably the William/Eleanor Kinkead family. The Virginia patents tell us that the Andrew Kincaid who served with Capt. Lewis was an assignee of a John Kincaid. The Kentucky patents show John Kincaid, Jr in Madison County, with Moore Kincaid and David Kincaid as chain bearers. Reading through the official handwritten document, I think that it shows it was John Kincaid, Senr., not Jnr. http://apps.sos.ky.gov/land/nonmilitary/patentseries/vaandokpatents/Default.aspx Barbara

Dear Kincaid-listers, I think I have figured out the Cumberland County, PA militia lists, aided by the explanation at the following website: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/MilitaryRevMilitiaInterface.htm There was a permanent billet battalion for each township where the list of classes were compiled and an active battalion to which officers and soldiers were attached when called to duty. The following timeline will hopefully better illustrate the Kincaids in the Cumberland County, PA Militia. There appears to be another James Kinkead with the William Kinkead in the 6th/4th Battalion from Hamilton Township. I have no idea which lineage these two men belong to. Dear Kincaid-listers, I looked up the laws pertaining to the raising of troops for the Pennsylvania Line and found the following: http://www.palrb.us/statutesatlarge/17001799/1780/0/act/0926.pdf Chapter CMXXVI Passed Dec. 23, 1780 An Act to Complete the quota of the federal army assigned to this state. Whereas the practice of enlisting soldiers for short terms has been attended with great inconvenience and danger to this and the United States in creating a necessity of frequently calling forth the militia, at a heavy expense, and waste of important time, and by reducing the in the field at critical periods to a number vastly inadequate to the service, to proceed to produce classes of men to enlist during the war and to deliver one able bodied recruit within 15 days thereafter. An act to raise 2700 able bodied men to serve in the Pennsylvania Line for 18 months from July 1, 1781 to be raised at the expense of Philadelphia, and the several counties; Philadelphia: 895, Bucks County: 177, Chester County: 284, Lancaster County: 384, York County: 214, Cumberland County: 202, Berks County: 193, Northampton: 112, Bedford County: 61, Northumberland County: 75, Westmoreland County: 103, Washington County: 103. Every recruit so enlisted and entered into the army shall receive one complete suit of clothes each year and at the end of the war two hundred acres of land and all other pay, gratuities and exemptions that other soldiers in the line of this state are entitled to. http://www.palrb.us/statutesatlarge/17001799/1781/0/act/0946.pdf Chapter CMXLVI Passed June 25, 1781 An Act for recruiting the Pennsylvania Line in the Army of the United States. And be it enacted by the authority aforesaid, that any person who, in pursuance of this act, shall enlist and deliver to the proper officer one able bodied recruit shall be exempted from all militia duty for and during the time of such enlistment. So as I read these acts the recruits for the Pennsylvania Continental Line after 1780 were drawn from the militia lists as they were drawn up in classes for the townships and boroughs and these classes had to provide one able bodied recruit until the quota for each county was fulfilled, in the case of Cumberland County, PA 202 able bodied recruits for 1781 with service for 18 months beginning from July 1, 1781. This was not really a volunteer enlistment but was a requirement of the law and those enlisting in the Pennsylvania line were exempt from all militia duty. They could be counted on the class roll until called to duty. I still need to study this further, but I think I have the basic intent of the law. For the full text of these laws see the links provided or search at: http://www.palrb.us/stlarge/index.asp Sincerely Norman Kincaide
Good luck on getting the dna participants you need to sort things out. The Kincaid DNA Project has 3 new participants in the past 2 weeks and has several more considering participating so maybe we will get some results that will help several lines. The latter has been very difficult and unresponsive but we should pursue!! Unless someone has information to the contrary Thomas is believed to be buried in Roane County beside his brother Thomas. We also have seen no evidence that the Thomas of Lewis Co. was married to a Mary Withrow. Thomas of Lewis Co.'s death information does indicate that he was a son of an "S" and born in Greenbrier Co. which is why he probably became attached to Samuel of the 3 wives. In 1850 Thomas of Lewis Co. says he is 49. (Thomas/Polly m 1815 with parental permission. He first appears on tax lists under his own name (designated as son of Sam) in 1815. Census info suggests a birthdate1795-99. 1795 is most reasonable). There are other Samuels in Greenbrier but some of them can be eliminated immediately. The best bet is Samuel, son of Samuel/Margaret Clark of Anthony Creek who appears on tax lists in 1802. If indeed this Thomas sired any children and is the son of this Samuel, their DNA would be Group C and vastly different then any of the Fayette Co. Kincaids who are all Group A. If the children of Lucinda Claypool are not his they will not match any Kincaid DNA) There were Withrows associated with James/Rosanna Baird who seems to be closely associated with George/Margaret Rennick who is closely associated with Samuel/Margaret Clark. The apparent connection between George W/Mary Campbell and Thomas/Isabella Campbell may be because they married sisters. There is a good possibility that Thomas/Isabella is the son of Thomas/Polly Davis as he did buy land which Thomas, son of Samuel, owned at one time. It may be worth your time to try tracking down a male descendent of Thomas/Isabella/Eliza. This may not be as hard as it seems. In the 1880 census he is listed with sons John M. age 20, Willie age 16, A. Judson age 4. In 1870 there are males Daniel G. 19, Curtis M 17, and George V. 13 in his household as well as John M and Willie. You should be able to follow these males using the 1900-1930 censuses. Some of them and their sons should be on the Social Security Death index which would lead you to obits which may lead you to living males. George Vanner died in 1952. In 1880 he has one daughter. Curtis m Mary R. Sims and died prior 1932. In 1880 he has son Lonzo 2 in his household. Daniel Augsustus m Susie Kious. He has only daughters in his 1880 household. He was still alive in 1933 when she died. John Morton is listed in the 1900 census with sons George M 16, Auguster 12, Earnest 6, and John newborn. I'm still slowing pursuing some additional candidates for DNA testing that may shed some light on this confusion. One is another descendant of George W. Kincaid of Fayette and Roane Counties WV and the second is a descendant of Thomas/Lucinda Claypool. The latter has been very difficult and unresponsive but we should pursue!! Unless someone has information to the contrary Thomas is believed to be buried in Roane County beside his brother Thomas. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: kincaid-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kincaid-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue Liedtke Sent: Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:41 AM To: kincaid@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KINCAID] DNA clarifies and terrifies We have not found a marriage bond for Thomas/Mary Withrow.
